Stub / Mock - A little guidance?
Hi there, I''m still trying to wrap my head around when to use a stub and a mock. If I understand this right, I should be using a ''mock'' when imitating an object, but not its behavior. I should be using a stub when I want to imitate the behavior of an object. Does that sound about right? With that said, I''m struggling a little trying to spec out this instance

multiple scenarios problem
Hi all I just recently started to use rspec and I''m having a problem using multple scenarios in one story. These are the two scenarios, trying to test my implemenation of the new http authentication in rails 2: Scenario "user has to authenticate" do Given "an anonymous user" do end When "visiting", "working_page" do |page|

help with rspec''ing controller
Hi, I''m a rspec newbie. I''m having trouble with rspec''ing a simple controller to Create a record. I''ve tried a couple of approaches and still get errors: Mock ''remedy'' expected :save! with (any args) once, but received it 0 times -or- Mock ''Remedy'' received unexpected message :save with (no args). Here are my two

How would you spec out something like the following: def a_method x = Class.new do include Enumerable end # do something here with x end describe "The Anonymous Class" do before :each do @anonymous_class = mock Class Class.stub!(:new).and_return @anonymous_class end it "should create a new anonymous class" do

[Stories] Login and subdomain
I''ve just begin using rspec stories, and i m encountering some problems. In my application i have different subdomains in which specific users can log in, for example an admin will go to admin.myapp.com/authenticate/login, and an user belonging to a specific company will log in company.myapp.com/authenticate/login, and of course both have a different login process. To perform some

should_receive.again
Hi, It appears that if I have 2 should_receives in a row, the latest one overrides the previous one(s). If there isn''t one, could we add a way to accumulate them, such as @thing.should_receive(:method).and_return(@value) @thing.should_receive(:method).again.and_return(@value) @thing.should_receive(:method).again.and_return(@value) would be equivalent to

should_receive(:foo).with(any_object)
Hey, I just ran into a situation where I would like to expect a method call with an argument I know and another one, which is a random number. I think mocking up the rand method is somehow ugly so I thought maybe this is the first time where I can take something from Java to Ruby ;) Java''s EasyMock mocking library knows things like "anyObject()" and "anyInteger()" in

should_receive, used in the wrong place?
What do you guys think of this: if someone calls should_receive outside of an "it" block, it warns you. before(:each) do @foo = Foo.new @foo.should_receive(:monkeys) end would warn you that you''re setting an expectation in the wrong place, and that "stub" is correct when setting up objects. Opinions? courtenay

Multiple should_receive(:render).with
I''m trying to specify that a particular view must render two different partials. My spec looks like: describe AClass do it do template.should_receive(:render).with(:partial => ''foo'', :locals => { ... }) ... end describe ''some conditional case'' do it do template.should_receive(:render).with(:partial =>

mocking errors
What is the correct way to mock out the errors on a Rails model? I''m assuming i need to say @mock_thing = mock_model(Thing) @mock_thing_errors = mock("errors") @mock_thing_errors.should_receive(:full_messages).and_return("An error") @mock_thing.should_receive(:errors).and_return(@mock_thing_errors) Just wanted to check the best practice on this kind of thing and how

samba on distro...
Hi, I have to setup a samba-server (and a bit intranet) for a school. There are about 200 client-pc's for about 1000 people. Now I wondered which OS would be best for us. Should we pay for a distro, or would a free distro be enough? And which distro should we use? Please keep in mind that schools like quality and don't like big bills! ;-) thanks in advance for any answer, Ivo Dancet

should_receive stubs methods?
Hey, I''m using rspec and rails and have a spec that tests if a before_filter is executed, I also have a spec that tests if a method called by the filter is executed. It appears however that when I should_receive something, it is no longer actually called when I fire the http request. I''m not sure how, or where exactly I should manually fire the filter, either before or after the

hardware question
I recently asked this question, but I didn't get an answer on this part of my question: What hardware would be able to do this with ease: I must install a samba server as PDC for my school. The server would authenticate users using openldap (on the same server). And if possible, I would also run an intranet on it (apache, php, mysql). There would be about a hundred (maybe 150 later on)

should_receive and multiple return values
Hi I just got bit by a misunderstanding about and_return. I''ve got this controller method parse_parameters that loops over query string parameters and parses out vehicle registration dates. We have to turn these into one of three bands (Jan-Feb, Mar-Aug, Sep- Dec) so I wrote a method (registration_date_to_band_year_and_month) takes a date and returns two return values, the year

STDOUT.should_receive(:puts).with Works *** (:print) fails
I use: STDOUT.should_receive(:puts).with...... many times in RSPEC However, I have a couple of "do you want(Y/N)?" where I use ''print'' and apparently ..(:print).with... does not work. I can change ''print'' to ''puts'' and it works perfectly. How do I test :print and ...getch("y") for input??? Any help would be

rails 1.2.1, locomotive and backgroundrb
Hi I just tried to move my project to rails 1.2.1 on my locomotive development setup. It seems that backgroundrb is not willing to start up anymore. If I switch locomotive back to 1.1.6, everthing is fine. This is the error I get while attempting to start backgroundrb: /Applications/Locomotive2/Bundles/standardRailsJan2007.locobundle/
