ZFS Compression algorithms - Project Proposal
Bellow, follows a proposal for a new opensolaris project. Of course, this is open to change since I just wrote down some ideas I had months ago, while researching the topic as a graduate student in Computer Science, and since I''m not an opensolaris/ZFS expert at all. I would really appreciate any suggestion or comments. PROJECT PROPOSAL: ZFS Compression Algorithms. The main purpose of

Using same ZFS under different kernel versions
I build two zfs filesystems using b29 (from brandz). I then re-installed solaris express b28, preserving the zfs filesystems. When I tried to "zpool import" my zfs filesystems I got a kernel panic: > debugging crash dump vmcore.0 (32-bit) from blackbird > operating system: 5.11 snv_28 (i86pc) > panic message: > ZFS: bad checksum (read on /dev/dsk/c1d0p0 off 24d5e000: zio

ZFS core contributor nominations
The time has come to review the current Contributor and Core contributor grants for ZFS. Since all of the ZFS core contributors grants are set to expire on 02-24-2009 we need to renew the members that are still contributing at core contributor levels. We should also add some new members to both Contributor and Core contributor levels. First the current list of Core contributors: Bill

LZO compression?
Hi, I don''t know if this has been discussed before, but have you thought about adding LZO compression to ZFS? One zfs-fuse user has provided a patch which implements LZO compression, and he claims better compression ratios *and* better speed than lzjb. The miniLZO library is licensed under the GPL, but the author specifically says that other licenses are available by request. Has this

ZFS unit of compression
Hello. I want to know what is the unit of compression in ZFS. Is it 4 KB or larger? Is it tunnable? Thanks. Thanos -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

Gzip compression for ZFS
Adam, With the blog entry[1] you''ve made about gzip for ZFS, it raises a couple of questions... 1) It would appear that a ZFS filesystem can support files of varying compression algorithm. If a file is compressed using method A but method B is now active, if I truncate the file and rewrite it, is A or B used? 2) The question of whether or not to use bzip2 was raised in the

implementing flac on an embedded device
Hi everyone, I'm currently working on project trying to send sensor data from a microcontroller over radio to another device. I need compression because the radio has not enough bandwidth to send it without. Because the sensor data quiet much resembles audio data I got the best compression results using lossless audio codecs instead of data compression algorithms like Lempel-Ziv. I

recovering data from a dettach mirrored vdev
Hi, my system (solaris b77) was physically destroyed and i loosed data saved in a zpool mirror. The only thing left is a dettached vdev from the pool. I''m aware that uberblock is gone and that i can''t import the pool. But i still hope their is a way or a tool (like tct http://www.porcupine.org/forensics/) i can go too recover at least partially some data) thanks in advance for

zfs discussion forum bug
I started three new threads recently, "Feature proposal: differential pools" "Feature proposal: trashcan via auto-snapshot with every txg commit" "Flushing synchronous writes to mirrors" Matthew Ahrens and Henk Langeveld both replied to my first thread by sending their messages to both me and to zfs-discuss at opensolaris.org, and Matt did likewise for my second

zfs destroy - destroying a snapshot
Hello zfs-discuss, I''m writing a script to do automatically snapshots and destroy old one. I think it would be great to add to zfs destroy another option so only snapshots can be destroyed. Something like: zfs destroy -s SNAPSHOT so if something other than snapshot is provided as an argument zfs destroy wouldn''t actually destroy it. That way it would

LZO versus LZJB
Hi Some developers here said a long time ago that someone should show the code for LZO compression support for ZFS before talking about the next step. I made that code with a friend and we also made a little benchmark to give a first impression: http://denisy.dyndns.org/lzo_vs_lzjb/ I hope we made no technical error, but if you find something not accurate, we will correct it. gzip compression throttles system?
I just had a quick play with gzip compression on a filesystem and the result was the machine grinding to a halt while copying some large (.wav) files to it from another filesystem in the same pool. The system became very unresponsive, taking several seconds to echo keystrokes. The box is a maxed out AMD QuadFX, so it should have plenty of grunt for this. Comments? Ian

R/W lock portability issue
Hi, I am having a problem porting Solaris R/W lock functionality to Linux. The problem is that RW_LOCK_HELD() doesn''t have an equivalent function in pthreads. This was not a problem before because RW_LOCK_HELD() was only used in ASSERT statements. In this case, I was able to make it work by making it behave a bit differently (specifically, it would return true if *any* thread was

suggestion: directory promotion to filesystem
Not sure how technically feasible it is, but something I thought of while shuffling some files around my home server. My poor understanding of ZFS internals is that the entire pool is effectivly a tree structure, with nodes either being data or metadata. Given that, couldnt ZFS just change a directory node to a filesystem with little effort, allowing me do everything ZFS does with filesystems on

compression at zfs filesystem creation
Hi, I just installed 2009.06 and found that compression isn''t enabled by default when filesystems are created. Does is make sense to have an RFE open for this? (I''ll open one tonight if need be.) We keep telling people to turn on compression. Are there any situations where turning on compression doesn''t make sense, like rpool/swap? what about rpool/dump? Thanks, ~~sa

zfs raidz1 and traditional raid 5 perfomrance comparision
Hi, for zfs raidz1, I know for random io, iops of a raidz1 vdev eqaul to one physical disk iops, since raidz1 is like raid5 , so is raid5 has same performance like raidz1? ie. random iops equal to one physical disk''s ipos. Regards Victor -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
