Doing ZFS rollback with preserving later created clones/snapshot?
Hi. Is it possible on Solaris 10 5/09, to rollback to a ZFS snapshot, WITHOUT destroying later created clones or snapshots? Example: --($ ~)-- sudo zfs snapshot rpool/ROOT at 01 --($ ~)-- sudo zfs snapshot rpool/ROOT at 02 --($ ~)-- sudo zfs clone rpool/ROOT at 02 rpool/ROOT-02 --($ ~)-- LC_ALL=C sudo zfs rollback rpool/ROOT at 01 cannot rollback to ''rpool/ROOT at 01'': more

bad 1.6.3 striped write performance
Hi, I''m seeing what can only be described as dismal striped write performance from lustre 1.6.3 clients :-/ 1.6.2 and 1.6.1 clients are fine. 1.6.4rc3 clients (from cvs a couple of days ago) are also terrible. the below shows that the OS (centos4.5/5) or fabric (gigE/IB) or lustre version on the servers doesn''t matter - the problem is with the 1.6.3 and 1.6.4rc3 client kernels

zfs destroy snapshot: dataset already exists?
Hi, I recently upgraded from 2009.06 to b131 (mainly to get dedup support). The upgrade to b131 went fairly smoothly, but then I ran into an issue trying to get the old datasets snapshotted and send/recv''d to dedup the existing data. Here''s the steps I ran: zfs snapshot -r data/media at prereplicate zfs create -o mountpoint=none data/media.new zfs send -R data/media at

How to delegate zfs snapshot destroy to users?
Hi, I''m trying to let zfs users to create and destroy snapshots in their zfs filesystems. So rpool/vm has the permissions: osol137 19:07 ~: zfs allow rpool/vm ---- Permissions on rpool/vm ----------------------------------------- Permission sets: @virtual clone, create, destroy, mount, promote, readonly, receive, rename, rollback, send, share, snapshot, userprop Create time permissions:

core dumps eating space in snapshots
I have many core files stuck in snapshots eating up gigs of my disk space. Most of these are BE''s which I don''t really want to delete right now. Is there a way to get rid of them? I know snapshots are RO but can I do some magic with clones and reclaim my space? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

snapshot incremental diff file list?
Hello all, I am interested in getting a list of the changed files between two snapshots in a fast and zfs-y way. I know that zfs knows all about what blocks have been changed, but can one map that to a file list? I know this could be solved with some rsync or star or (some other app) love, but those would involve whole tree crawls(kind of slow on a multi Tb filesystem). Possible? Asa

Daily snapshots as replacement for incremental backups
Hello, I have a situation where a zfs file server holding lots of graphic files cannot be backed up daily with a full backup. My idea was initially to run a full backup on Sunday through the lto library on more dedicated tapes, then have an incremental backup run on daily tapes. Brainstorming on this, led me to the idea that I could actually stop thinking about incremental backups (that may always

Shadow copy format for snapshots and Samba
Samba has a shadow_copy module to serve read-only snapshots to windows clients. I tried to use snapshotting in freebsd 5 (haven''t tried 6), but couldn''t get it stable. I''m really looking forward to getting it going on Solaris. Anyway you can read about the format of the link here: http://us5.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/VFS.html#id2618182 When it

Moving default snapshot location
Hi, We have implemented a zfs files system for home directories and have enabled it with quotas+snapshots. However the snapshots are causing an issue with the user quotas. The default snapshot files go under ~username/.zfs/snapshot, which is a part of the user file system. So if the quota is 10G and the snapshots total to 2G, this adds to the disk space used by the user. Is there any turnaround

Snapshot access from non-global zones
Hello I''m curious what is the best (if any) way to access ZFS snapshots from the non-global zones? I have a common ZFS file system (on Solaris Express b116 for ex.) in a global zone, mounted as lofs to several non-global zones. In each zone I can access all files with no problem, but I''m unable to the snapshots. I can get the list of snapshots, but not the content of

Question regarding "zfs snapshot -r"
Hello All, I have two questions related to "zfs snapshot -r" 1. When "zfs snapshot -r tank at today" command is issued, does it creates snapshots for all the descendent file systems at the same moment? I mean to say if the command is issued at 10:20:35 PM, does the creation time of all the snapshots for descendent file systems are same? 2. Say, tank has around 5000

zfs snapshot restarts scrubbing?
Hi, yesterday I implemented a simple hourly snapshot on my filesystems. I also regularly initiate a manual "zpool scrub" on all my pools. Usually the scrubbing will run for about 3 hours. But after enabling hourly snapshots I noticed that zfs scrub is always restarted if a new snapshot is created - so basically it will never have the chance to finish: # zpool scrub scratch # zpool

Re: libguestfs support snapshot based virutal disk analysis?
I've used QEMU to read .vmdk snapshots. The VM directory layout in my case (Fusion, and I've seen Workstation do the same) created a .vmdk file per snapshot, and qemu-img could use that .vmdk file and the base .vmdk to convert the disk image to a raw image. IIRC there is a manifest file that ties .vmdk files to the snapshot they represent. So, from my experience, qemu does read disk

zfs destroy - destroying a snapshot
Hello zfs-discuss, I''m writing a script to do automatically snapshots and destroy old one. I think it would be great to add to zfs destroy another option so only snapshots can be destroyed. Something like: zfs destroy -s SNAPSHOT so if something other than snapshot is provided as an argument zfs destroy wouldn''t actually destroy it. That way it would

Cannot destroy snapshots: dataset does not exist

Here''s what I see: root at bambi:/# zfs rollback bambi/faline/userdocs at AutoD-2010-09-28 cannot rollback to ''bambi/faline/userdocs at AutoD-2010-09-28'': more recent snapshots exist use ''-r'' to

Automate Destroying Snapshot''s
I have created a script that gets a snapshot and backs the snapshot to tape. I would like to keep the snapshot around for one week, than destroy it using the following command: "zfs destroy snapshotlvolume." Is there a way to automate the destroying of snapshots that are older that x amount of days? This message and its attachments may contain legally privileged or
