JBOD recommendation for ZFS usage
Dear all
Sorry if it''s kind of off-topic for the list but after talking
to lots of vendors I''m running out of ideas...
We are looking for JBOD systems which
(1) hold 20+ 3.3" SATA drives
(2) are rack mountable
(3) have all the nive hot-swap stuff
(4) allow 2 hosts to connect via SAS (4+ lines per host) and see
all available drives as disks, no RAID volume.

zfs, raidz, spare and jbod
Hi.
I installed solaris express developer edition (b79) on a supermicro
quad-core harpertown E5405 with 8 GB ram and two internal sata-drives.
I installed solaris onto one of the internal drives. I added an areca
arc-1680 sas-controller and configured it in jbod-mode. I attached an
external sas-cabinet with 16 sas-drives 1 TB (931 binary GB). I
created a raidz2-pool with ten disks and one spare.

Best use of 4 drives?
I''m putting together a NexentaOS (b65)-based server that has 4 500 GB drives on it. Currently it has two, set up as a ZFS mirror. I''m able to boot Nexenta from it, and it seems to work ok. But, as I''ve learned, the mirror is not properly redundant, and so I can''t just have a drive fail (when I pull one, the OS ends up hanging, and even if I replace it, I have to

Nice chassis for ZFS server
Hi,
I just came across this box [0] (McKay Creek). Seems to be exceptional
building material for ZFS based NAS/iSCSI unit. I especially liked the
two extra system disks hidden inside the box !
Any one have an experience with these ?

X2200-M2
After the interesting revelations about the X2100 and it''s hot-swap abilities,
what are the abilities of the X2200-M2''s disk subsystem, and is ZFS going to
tickle any wierdness out of them?

sun x2100 gmirror problem
Hi,
We're using gmirror on our sun fire x2100 and FreeBSD 6.1-p10. Some days
ago I found this in the logs:

UNEXPECTED SOFT UPDATE INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY

Sep 21 08:57:54 belle fsck: /dev/ad4s1d: UNEXPECTED SOFT UPDATE INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
Ok, so I ran fsck manually (even with -y), but yet it refuses to clear/fix
whatever to the questions posed as fsck runs. What does this all mean?
Thanks,

Looking for motherboard/chipset experience, again
What about the Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard? It has 7 SATA ports,
supports ECC memory, socket AM2, generally looks very attractive for
my home storage server. Except that it, and the nvidia nForce 570-SLI
it''s built on, don''t seem to be on the HCL. I''m hoping that''s just
"yet", not reported yet. Anybody run Solaris on it? Or at least on

Optimal strategy (add or replace disks) to build a cheap and raidz?
Hello,
i have an 8 port sata-controller and i don''t want to spend the money for 8 x 750 GB Sata Disks
right now. I''m thinking about an optimal way of building a growing raidz-pool without loosing
any data.
As far as i know there are two ways to achieve this:
- Adding 750 GB Disks from time to time. But this would lead to multiple groups with multiple
redundancy/parity disks. I

CR 6483250 closed: will not fix
ZFS fans,
Recalling our conversation about hot-plug and hot-swap terminology and use,
I afraid to say that CR 6483250 has been closed as will-not-fix. No explaination
was given. If you feel strongly about this, please open another CR and pile on.

Raidz vdev size... again.
Hi,
i''m new to the list so please bare with me. This isn''t an OpenSolaris
related problem but i hope it''s still the right list to post to.
I''m on the way to move a backup server to using zfs based storage, but i
don''t want to spend too much drives to parity (the 16 drives are attached
to a 3ware raid controller so i could also just use raid6 there).

CF to SATA adapters for boot device
Has anyone here had any luck using a CF to SATA adapter?
I''ve just tried an Addonics ADSACFW CF to SATA adaptor with an 8GB card that I wanted to use for a boot pool and even though the BIOS reports the disk, Solaris B95 (or the installer) doesn''t see it.
I might give the IDE version a go (I really wanted hoT-plug), otherwise I''ll be able to store a couple of thousand

e-sata
Hi,
Does anybody has any experience with e-sata on CentOS5.2?
- How fast is it? Same as an internal sata?
- Does it support sata-2?
- Does it "hot-plug" like a USB?

Big JBOD: what would you do?
ZFS fans,
I''m preparing some analyses on RAS for large JBOD systems such as
the Sun Fire X4500 (aka Thumper). Since there are zillions of possible
permutations, I need to limit the analyses to some common or desirable
scenarios. Naturally, I''d like your opinions. I''ve already got a few
scenarios in analysis, and I don''t want to spoil the brain storming, so

bad seagate drive?
Hi list,
I''ve got a system with 3 WD and 3 seagate drives. Today I got an email
that zpool status indicated one of the seagate drives as REMOVED.
I''ve tried clearing the error but the pool becomes faulted again. Taken
out the offending drive and plugged into a windows box with seatools
install. Unfortunately seatools finds nothing wrong with the drive.
Windows seems to see

What is the 32 GB 2.5-Inch SATA Solid State Drive?
Does anyone know about this device?
SESX3Y11Z 32 GB 2.5-Inch SATA Solid State Drive with Marlin Bracket
for Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120, T5220, T5140 and T5240 Servers, RoHS-6
Compliant
This is from Sun''s catalog for the T5120 server. Would this work well
as a separate ZIL device for ZFS? Is there any way I could use this in
a T2000 server? The brackets appear to be

Still more questions WRT selecting a mobo for small ZFS RAID
Like many others, I am looking to put together a SOHO NAS based on ZFS/CIFS. The plan is 6 x 1TB drives in RAIDZ2 configuration, driven via mobo with 6 SATA ports.
I''ve read most, if not all, of the threads here, as well as sbredon''s excellent article on building a home NAS, yet I still have a number of unanswered questions.
I was leaning heavily towards the M2N-E for a while,

6 disk raidz2 or 3 stripe 2 way mirror
I''m playing around with ZFS and want to figure out the best use of my 6x
300GB SATA drives. The purpose of the drives is to store all of my data at
home (video, photos, music, etc). I''m debating between:
6x 300GB disks in a single raidz2 pool
--or--
2x (3x 300GB disks in a pool) mirrored
I''ve read up a lot on ZFS, but I can''t really figure out which is

[Hardware] Good Server I/O on-the-cheap: ASL Monarch 811x with CentOS 4.2 ...
Since good server designs have come up in the past, I wanted to point
out a "low-cost" server option that has good I/O, and the vendor offers
_your_choice_ of not only Fedora Core or Red Hat Enterprise Linux, but
_also_ CentOS _shipped_ with it!
IN-A-NUTSHELL ...
Starting at just over $750, you can get a single Socket-939 Opteron 1xx
(dual-core is an option) system with up to 4GiB of
