Books, other resources for new Rails VPS sysadmin
Hello!
Since Virtual Private Server seems to be the only way to run Rails
apps without problems, so in the future I will need to become a Linux
sysadmin.
I plan on using debian (as per Ezra''s instructions in <http://
brainspl.at/pages/perfect_vps>).
Rails VPS sysadmin is not the same as general Linux sysadmin, since
only webserver, db and email are of interest (and of

unicode hacks - fixes for webrick and Safari
Hello!
First, thank you Julian for the useful plugin ''unicode_hacks'' <
http://julik.textdriven.com/svn/tools/rails_plugins/unicode_hacks/>.
I have found some problems running my app in development on Webrick
and looking at it with Safari (MacOS X 10.4.3, Safari 2.0.2). Some
files are sent with different sizes (e.g. default css example, or
controls.js ), and it

How to pass a collection to paginate?
There must be a better way to write this code:
@project_pages, @projects= paginate :project,
:per_page => 10,
:conditions => ["account_id = ?", account]
?!
If only I could pass the sub-collection
account = ...
@projects = account.project
to paginate, instead of letting it extract it with a find :all + sql
conditions

Ruby "htmlentities" replacement: code review please!
Hi Railers,
For some time now I''ve been looking for a decent Rails equivalent of PHP''s
"htmlentities" command, because ERB''s html_escape (or more commonly called as
just "h", eg. <%=h @somevariable %> ) just doesn''t go far enough for me.
Back in PHP land, I actually had an extended version of the htmlentities
command to deal with

Connecting to Oracle from an Intel Mac -- arch. conflicts
Hi all,
I''ve got a rather complex problem on my hands. I''m using Leopard (OSX
10.5) on an Intel Mac, with the standard Ruby and Rails installations.
In order to get Rails to talk to Oracle, I upgraded the Rails gems to
the latest release candidate (1.99), and installed the oracle adapter
gem. So far so good.
But the Oracle InstantClient is a PPC-only library. You

Help with Multiple Readers, 1 Writer scenario
Hi,
I''m building a web server application using Ferret [thanks so much
Dave], Mongrel and Camping which works fine servicing one request at a
time, but serialises searches if more than one request arrives, so I''d
like some advice please about the best way to use multiple readers and
one writer.
Some background ... query requests which in my case are always read
only, arrive via

In memory IndexReader bug?
Hi All,
Hope all is going well.
I''m having trouble with the following code creating an in memory index
reader - it seems to be attempting to read from a file regardless.
Here''s the simple code:
require ''rubygems''
require ''ferret''
a = Ferret::Index::Index.new
r = Ferret::Index::IndexReader.new(nil)
Running the code on my OS X machine

Parallel indexing doesn''t work?
Hi,
I''m trying to get parallelized ferret indexing working for my AAF
indices, based on the example in the O''Reilly Ferret shortcut.
However, the resulting indices after merging seem to have no actual
documents.
I went and made minimal changes to the example in the Ferret shortcut
pdf, and indeed can''t get that to work either. I''d appreciate any help

Help with Multiple Readers, 1 Writer scenario

RDig and AAF playing together
I have a site with two indexes. Index A is created offline by RDig
and queried from the web via RDig (specifically,
RDig.searcher.search). Index B is managed by AAF with :remote =>
true. Simple enough. However, I need to query both indexes from RDig.
Usually this is ok, as I modified RDig to accept an array of
search_paths with an element for index A and index B.
However, when Index

IndexReader NotImplemented
Hi there,
Sorry if this has come up before, but I couldn''t see it obviously
addressed anywhere. There are a few methods in IndexReader that raise
NotImplementedErrors. I''m specifically interested in get_term_vector,
but there are a number of others. Is there anything specific holding
these back, or would patches to implement them be accepted?
Thanks,

Most Popular Searches
Hi,
I have an index where each document contains an untokenized ''url''
field. I would like to query the index for the most popular urls. In
SQL I would do this via a Group By clause. Is there anything in
Ferret that will do something similar?
I found this discussion that proposed a solution involving TermEnums:

Getting non-stemmed terms from IndexReader
I need to get a set of terms being indexed using Ferret. I used
IndexReader.terms and it returns a list of TermEnum nicely. The only
problem is that my analyzer includes a stemming filter.
So now, the terms I''m getting back are all stemmed. Is there anyway to
get the original unstemmed terms back from the index somehow? Thanks.

Mapping to BigDecimals instead of Floats
Hi everyone,
I''m new to Rails and Ruby, and have been working my way through the Pickaxe
and Agile Rails books for the last week or so. With a background in payroll
apps I found that the default ActiveRecord mapping of decimal columns to
float variables really bothered me! Financial calcs need high levels of
accuracy and floats just don''t give you that.
I know there are a bunch

lock problems from concurrent processes.
Hi!
First, thanks a LOT for ferret. The API and documentation is great.
I''m trying to integrate ferret into a RoR app (DamageControl) and have
run into a problem with locks.
DamageControl consists of two processes that start up and run in
parallel. The first one is the webapp (which
is just a plain RoR app). The second is a daemon process that runs in
the background.
The daemon process

How can I count frequency of terms in a document?
Hi, there.
I need some help.
Is there a way to count frequencies of terms in a document on Ferret?
I know that Ferret has IndexReader#terms_docs_for method which counts
all documents.
I need to count frequencies of terms in a specific document.
Some way??

Index::Index.new vs. Readers and Writers
Hey gang,
A post on the Rails forum a while back had it sound like you pretty much
had to use the Index Readers & Writers if you were going to be
potentially accessing an index from more than one process. (i.e.
multiple dispatch.fcgi''s, etc)
Is this still the case, or does the main Index class do that black magic
behind the scenes? =)
I was having trouble implementing the

Error with :create => true and existing index
I implemented a "reindex" command which simply creates an IndexWriter
with :create => true for a prexisting index.
The "reindexing" seems to start out ok, with several thousand docs
added, then Ferret throws an exception:
IO Error occured: couldn''t rename file "index\_0.tmp" to "index\_0.cfs":
<File exists>
I guess that _0.cfs is held

highlighting from multiple indexes
Hi.
I''m searching multiple indexes by passing an array of paths to
Index::IndexReader.new(). I get several hits back, and can determine
the document id of each.
Now I want to fetch highlighted excerpts from a field in one of the
matched documents. The problem I''m having is that Index::IndexReader
doesn''t have a highlight() method. And, while Index::Index does
