Escaping special characters :, (, ), [, ], {, }, !, +, ", ~, ^, -, |, <, >, =, *, ?, \
Hello, I am trying to escape words for searching i.e., "hello". The key here is that the two L''s on "hello" are actually vertical bars. Is there a special function in Ferret or anywhere for that matter that will do the escaping of the Ferret special characters? Thanks in advance, Benjamin

indexing tuples (example: "frog" => 123) as opposed to words
Hi, I need to map words in a document back to there original word id''s in my database. For example, if I had the sentence "I eat food" and I was searching for "food" I would obviously get the document back as a result. For my particular problem I need to not only get the document id but also the id of the match. Suppose my original sentence was actually

Date range queries return zero results
Hello, I am having trouble getting data ranges to work correctly. I am using the following command to load the db: index << {:title => row[7].to_i, :date => Date.strptime(row[3], ''%Y-%m-%d''), :page_id => row[5].to_i, :page => row[6].to_i, :content_type => row[1].to_i,

Does sort work for strings work?
Hi, I am trying to get sorting working. I have had success with numbers but when I try to sort my string fields nothing happens. I am using the following code: options = {} s = Search::SortField.new(''object_title'', :reverse => false) options[:sort] = s @index.search_each("my query",options) do |id, score| puts "-->Document #{id} found with a

select model & field for search
hi, I was wondering if someone could help me? I am trying to create a select option for the ferret search in my app. I want users to be able to select from a range of fields and models to limit their query results. How to search with limit by field
Hello, I have a ferret index with 2 fields: Acts_as_ferret :fields => [:client, :content] If I do model.find_by_contents(query) I obtain all results by the query but I would like to obtain 3 results for each client. Any ideas? Thanks for all. -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

IO Error when querying on a single field
I''m getting an exception when I query a large index (4GB, ~700K docs) on a particular field. For example: supplier_id:77490 IO Error occured at <except.c>:93 in xraise (IOError) Error occured in fs_store.c:293 - fsi_seek_i seeking pos -1515676213: <Invalid argument> Anecdotally it seems to happen for supplier_ids > 76900. Missing Ferret 0.9.0 Field methods
The following instance methods seem to be missing from the Ferret::Document::Field class in Ferret 0.9.0 using compiled C extensions: #string_value, #reader_value and #binary_value. They are in the pure ruby implementation). I got round it by mixing in hacked versions of the pure Ruby methods (@data replaced by self.data). Many thanks for Ferret it''s shaping up to being a killer app

Ferret 0.10 and Fields
Hey ... I just tried to convert my code to 0.10 .. But i''m currently not sure how to use fields.. i really like some of the new api.. its leaner and i like the fact that these strange consts are gone (like Ferret::Search::BooleanClause::Occur::MUST) .. I see that you''re now having Ferret::Index::FieldInfo to describe the fields of the index.. thats good.. and i now see that

Indexing fails -- _ntc6.tmp exceeds 2 gigabyte maximum
Ferret 0.9.3 Ruby 1.8.2 NOT storing file contents in the index. Only indexing first 25k of each file. Very large data set (1 million files, 350 Gb) Code based on snippet from David Balmain''s forum posts. After 6 hours, Ferret bails out with Ruby "exceeds max file size". Is it possible to work without DRB
Hi, I am looking for solution to work with ferret without DRB. I would like to turn off ferret indexing from application and use existing ferret index only for searching (read only), while I would create indexes once a day from script. Is it possible and how to turn indexing off and would ferret still complain if 2 mongrels try to open index file. thanks, Bojan -- Posted via

Example on how to boost a field?
I am wondering whether one could boost certain fields (e.g., title and keywords) to make them ''weigh'' more against searches across all fields. I know that Document::Field has a boost attribute and that it accepts a boost argument in the constructor (although I''ve had not much luck with it, I am just getting back exceptions upon init w/ boost), but I was wondering

multi-model search best practices
Hi folks. If I am indexing ModelA and ModelB and I want to search both of them, I usually just pick one arbitrarily and use it for #multi_search. Is there a slicker pattern, regarding from which model to invoke #multi_search? Can it be invoked directly from the Ferret library? Has anyone put together some sort of "dummy" search class? Thanks for any ideas. John

Reworking the Index Constructor
Hey .. I was thinking about the way I need to use the Ferret::Index::Index Class and its subclasses .. i find it somehow complex .. I think this can be done more easily .. Most of the Time a user needs to open up a index to do queries, the best way would be to use a IndexReader afaik. I would suggest to do it that way: index = Ferret::Index::Index.new( :path =>

multiple-index searching with merged results
Hey.. i am just browsing through the lucene features and i''m wondering if this feature is available in ferret as well .. # multiple-index searching with merged results this would be nice, as i''m thinking about several indexes, as i am using a lot of wildcard queries for livesearches like google suggest. i think the performance would increase, if i split my rather big index in
