acts_as_ferret transactions
acts_as_ferret does not handle transaction aborts properly. If a model
is modified but something latter causes the transaction it was wrapped
in to abort, the ferret index will not revert to the original record
data. I have included a klunky patch to defer modifying the ferret
index until after the current transaction commits. It would seem
prudent to resolve this issue, though I

ANN: acts_as_ferret
Hi all
This week I have worked with Rails and Ferret to test Ferrets (and Lucenes)
capabilities. I decided to make a mixin for ActiveRecord as it seemed the
simplest possible solution and I ended up making this into a plugin.
For more info on Ferret see:
http://ferret.davebalmain.com/trac/
The plugin is functional but could easily be refined. Anyway I want to share it
with you. Regard it as a

We''ve been running into problems with ferret indexing lately. The
problem is intermittent and some times it persists. Just got this after
wiping the index and redeploying:

Ferret debugging
Is there any way to debug processes of creating/updating of index and
data retrieval?
I use ferret (0.10.13) and acts_as_ferret plugin, and it seems that
index is being updated - field ''state_or_province_or_region'' has value
''ON'':

Update/Create record only if field is true
I have a sellable flag in my database. I''m trying to have ferret only
add/update records where sellable == true. What is the best way to do
this? I''ve tried editing instance_methods.rb in the AAF, but I still
can''t get it to work.
Thanks for the help

disabling automatic indexing in acts_as_ferret
I''d like to be able to enable/disable the automatic indexing of
documents acts_as_ferret does. Something like MyModel.disable_indexing
MyModel.enable_indexing would be perfect. I need this because I do some
indexing that requires visiting the parents of the model objects and my
import method imports the children first, so the information isn''t there
yet. I''d like to

Possibly same issue as ''duplicate search results'' topic?
Unfortunately I''m a newbie to ruby, rails, and acts_as_ferret. Also,
I''m working in code I mostly didn''t write, so I''m kind of unsure of
things. So this may be a dumb question. It also may be the same issue
as the topic ''Duplicate search results'', but I''m not sure.

search results autocompletion
Dear list,
I ''m using a text input field with autocompletion . The suggestions come
from a ferret index which is created by getting all the terms belonging to
other indices. Here is the code:
class Suggestion
attr_accessor :term
def self.index(create)
[Person, Project, Orgunit].each{|kl|
terms = self.all_terms(kl)
terms.each{|term|

plotting x y z data from an irregular grid
Hi,
I'm trying to plot some data (z) that is linked to lat&long coordinates
(x&y). These coordinates are not however on a regular grid. I also have some
shapefiles on which I would like to overlay the data. I can plot the
shapefiles (country/city outlines) and overplot the data, but only using
quilt.plot because I otherwise always get the error message that

[0.10.0 - acts_as_ferret] Problem while saving new items
Disclaimer: ferret newbie here, don''t blame too hard.
Hi, I''m trying to apply acts_as_ferret to apply search to my Person
model:
class Person < ActiveRecord::Base
validates_presence_of :name, :surname
acts_as_ferret :fields => [ ''name'', ''surname'' ]
...
But when I try to save a new Person instance I get this error:

Ferret slow after a while
I''m building a new index from scratch based on a number of documents
stored in a database loaded using my Rails env (using Ruby Ferret 0.9x
(installed today with Gem) on Windows). At first everything goes nice
but after a number of documents it starts to go slower and slower until
it grinds to a halt (at least feels like it).
Am I doing something wrong? Is there some way to work

Using acts_as_ferret outside rails
How do I use a model that has "acts_as_ferret" defined outside rails?
I''ve tried adding this to the top of my model:
require
"#{RAILS_ROOT}/vendor/plugins/acts_as_ferret/lib/acts_as_ferret.rb"
and then defining RAILS_ROOT and RAILS_ENV in my app that uses the model
outside rails. That got me this exception:

Rebuild Indexes Issue
Hi,
I have some code to rebuild my ferret indexes but occasionally some
stale documents remain in the index even after rebuilding. The only
way I could find around this is to manually delete the index files
from the filesystem. Here is the code I have for rebuilding one of my
indexes for Gifts:
# delete existing entries
INDEX.size.times {|i| INDEX.delete(i)}

bad interaction of ferret (0.10.5) and mongrel on linux
We have an application that uses Ferret and acts_as_ferret that we
just upgraded to Ferret 0.10.5 (from 0.9.5) and the corresponding
version of the acts_as_ferret. Everything works as expected on my
laptop, which is running mongrel 0.3.13.3. When I deploy the
application on our server, which is running some version of Red Hat
Linux, I can''t get Ferret to work at all when

Typo and acts_as_ferret rebuild_index errror
Hi, I''m running the edge Typo and the latest acts_as_ferret plugin and
ferret gems (as of 11 April).
In my Content model I put acts_as_ferret :fields => [:title, :body]
In the console, I call Content.rebuild_index to index all of my existing
content. All the directories get created etc, but I get the following
error back:

Hi,
I just installed via script/plugin from the stable svn tag. (Revision 54)
I''m running Rails 1.1.2 and have Ferret 0.9.3 (with C extensions. no
compilation problems)
I put together a simple model to test it and I''m getting a segfault.
The model:

Updating Index Is Very Slow
Hi,
I am experiencing very poor performance when updating my index. For
example, to update the index for 10 documents, it is taking 3 to 4
seconds. My index is currently very small... with probably less than
100 docs in it.
I have created my index as follows:
GIFT_INDEX = Index::Index.new(:path => "#{index_dir}/gift", :key =>
''id'', :auto_flush => true)
