Big JBOD: what would you do?
ZFS fans, I''m preparing some analyses on RAS for large JBOD systems such as the Sun Fire X4500 (aka Thumper). Since there are zillions of possible permutations, I need to limit the analyses to some common or desirable scenarios. Naturally, I''d like your opinions. I''ve already got a few scenarios in analysis, and I don''t want to spoil the brain storming, so

hardware sizing for a zfs-based system?
Hi all, I''m putting together a OpenSolaris ZFS-based system and need help picking hardware. I''m thinking about using this 26-disk case: [FYI: 2-disk RAID1 for the OS & 4*(4+2) RAIDZ2 for SAN] http://rackmountpro.com/productpage.php?prodid=2418 Regarding the mobo, cpus, and memory - I searched goggle and the ZFS site and all I came up with so far is that, for a

# devices in raidz.
for s10u2, documentation recommends 3 to 9 devices in raidz. what is the basis for this recommendation? i assume it is performance and not failure resilience, but i am just guessing... [i know, recommendation was intended for people who know their raid cold, so it needed no further explanation] thanks... oz -- ozan s. yigit | oz at somanetworks.com | 416 977 1414 x 1540 I have a hard time

6 disk raidz2 or 3 stripe 2 way mirror
I''m playing around with ZFS and want to figure out the best use of my 6x 300GB SATA drives. The purpose of the drives is to store all of my data at home (video, photos, music, etc). I''m debating between: 6x 300GB disks in a single raidz2 pool --or-- 2x (3x 300GB disks in a pool) mirrored I''ve read up a lot on ZFS, but I can''t really figure out which is

ZFS Performance as a function of Disk Slice
First Post! Sorry, I had to get that out of the way to break the ice... I was wondering if it makes sense to zone ZFS pools by disk slice, and if it makes a difference with RAIDZ. As I''m sure we''re all aware, the end of a drive is half as fast as the beginning ([i]where the zoning stipulates that the physical outside is the beginning and going towards the spindle increases hex

can't find files due to wrong filepath
Hi all, i run wine for quite some time now, and it always worked allright for programs like paint shop pro 4, and some program's i wrote for myself with vbasic/c++ but i read about transgaming, with a new Directx api, so i wanted to give that a try. that distrobution runs my old programs like psp well, but some programs can't run because they seem to miss some files.. i had that same

[nbdkit PATCH] blocksize: Fix .extents when plugin changes type within minblock
It is easy to demonstrate that our blocksize filter has a bug: if the minblock= setting is a higher granularity than the underlying plugin actually supports, and the client is trying to collect block status for the entire disk, a mid-block transition in the plugin can result in the filter rounding a request so small that it no longer makes progress, causing the client to see: nbd.Error:

RingCentral UI
I'm trying to use RingCentral with wine. The ui displays, but I get an dialog box error message because of an msxml (ie) dependency, and the console produces the text listed below. I run winetricks fakeie6 and try to run, but it still complains... Should I install IE? What version of IE should I install? Thanks, -Jmt Jmt:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/RingCentral/RingCentral Call

[nbdkit PATCH v2 3/3] filters: Add blocksize filter
The upstream NBD protocol recently clarified that servers can advertise block size limitations to clients that ask with NBD_OPT_GO (although we're still a ways off from implementing that in nbdkit); and that in the absence of that, then clients should agree on limits using out-of-band information or stick to sane defaults (everything 512-byte-aligned, no reads or writes larger than 32M). But

Winetools is terrific
Yesterday, I finally jad an extended opportunity to try using wt to set up wine again. Last time I tried, ie wouldn't work when I got through. This time, it worked great. I am thinking that part of the problem was due to the time required for the download of IE, using the dialup connection. Winsserver timed out a number of times. By installing again, the downloaded stuff was already there,

ZFS Large scale deployment model
We have a virtualized environment of T-Series where each host has either zones or LDoms. All of the virtual systems will have their own dedicated storage on ZFS (and some may also get raw LUNs). All the SAN storage is delivered in fixed sized 33GB LUNs. The question I have to the community is whether it would be better to have a pool per virtual system, or create a large pool and carve out ZFS

Xen-4.0.0 RC6 Test Report. Xen: #21022 & Dom0: #eb739c...
Hi All, Here is the test report for Xen-4.0.0-rc6(Xen C/S 21022). Our testing covers following features, like VT-x/VT-x2, VT-d, SR-IOV, Power Management, RAS, and TXT. There are 2 new RAS bugs exposed in this testing compared with RC5 testing. 2 bugs are fixed. VT-d/SR-IOV and TXT can work without major bug. Most bugs are in RAS side. Dom0 S3 cannot work on Gulftown-HEDT platform. We use latest

habtm vs. has_many/belongs_to
In AWDWR David says (pg 232), "When a Join Wants to Be a Model: While a many-to-many relation with attributes can often seem like the obvious choice, it?s often a mirage for a missing domain model. When it is, it can be advantageous to convert this relationship into a real model and decorate it with a richer set of behavior. This lets you accompany the data with methods. As an example,
