External eSata ZFS raid possible?
Is this possible?
I want an external case with 4 HD in, each having an individual eSata cable. I plug in this case only when needed (each HD plugs into my PC separately), and do something like ">import ZFS pool" and use my ZFS raid. When done, I unplug it with ">export ZFS pool" or something similar command. This way I save energy, less noise, etc. I want it only as a

External SATA drive enclosures + ZFS?
Hi all,
Space is starting to get a bit tight here, so I''m looking at adding
a couple of TB to my home server. I''m considering external USB or
FireWire attached drive enclosures. Cost is a real issue, but I also
want the data to be managed by ZFS--so enclosures without a JBOD option
have been disgarded (i.e., I don''t want to use any internal HW RAID
controllers).

SATA controler req
Hello,
I'm looking for a recomendation for a SATA controlers. In the range of 4-8
ports, either PCI or PCIe (for desktop use) and/or PCI-X, PCIe (for server
use). I'd especially like it if the Linux driver was already in CentOS or
easily added. Everytime I find something interesting, a google search shows up
either the drivers is for 2.6.30 (ie, not CentOS), someone tried it and it was

ZFS Inexpensive SATA Whitebox
All,
So I have started working with Solaris 10 at work a bit (I''m a Linux
guy by trade) and I have a dying nfs box at home. So the long and short of
it is as follows: I would like to setup a SATAII whitebox that uses ZFS as
its filesystem. The box will probably be very lightly used, streaming media
to my laptop and workstation would be the bulk of the work. However I do
have quite a

USB Audio sound card
All-
Ah, the saga of the 1U workstation continues. So, in all my work configuring
the thing, I completely forgot about AUDIO; I only realized my mistake when I
went on a cable-measuring expedition this morning. Unfortunately, none of the
1U servers I've been looking at come with audio outputs (there aren't even
audio headers on the motherboard), and I've used the only availabnle slot

Best use of 4 drives?
I''m putting together a NexentaOS (b65)-based server that has 4 500 GB drives on it. Currently it has two, set up as a ZFS mirror. I''m able to boot Nexenta from it, and it seems to work ok. But, as I''ve learned, the mirror is not properly redundant, and so I can''t just have a drive fail (when I pull one, the OS ends up hanging, and even if I replace it, I have to

USB-3.0 on C6.5 ??
Just wondering if there are any known issues with USB 3.0 storage devices
in Centos 6.5??
I just got one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817332028
it does either esata or USB 3.0. My new motherboard (ASUS M5A99X EVO
R2.0) supports both, so I've tried both (of course, can't have a feature
without at least giving it a whirl! :)). esata seems to work fine,

X2200-M2
After the interesting revelations about the X2100 and it''s hot-swap abilities,
what are the abilities of the X2200-M2''s disk subsystem, and is ZFS going to
tickle any wierdness out of them?

Force SATA1 on AOC-SAT2-MV8
I have a supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 and am having some issues getting drives to work. From what I can tell, my cables are to long to use with SATA2. I got some drives to work by jumpering them down to sata1, but other drives I can''t jumper without opening the case and voiding the drive warranty. Does anyone know if there is a system setting to drop it back to SATA1? I use zfs on a raid2 if

eSATA drive enclosure of a full PC?
HI All,
I have a dilemma and I would appreciate advice
1. Get a good size case, mobo, processor, etc and put 8 hard drives it in and RAID them. (yes an 8 port SATA mobo). Running CentOS.
or
2. Get an eSATA enclosure that has room for 8 or 10 drives and just connect it to box?
I know that RAID is not a full proof backup, but I am looking for a solution to store all of my data, projects, music,

HotPlug, eSATA, and /media
Ok, got a quickie.
I have an eSATA drive, a 750GB Seagate in an eSATA external enclosure, and a
Silicon Image sil3132 ExpressCard controller for my laptop. The disk and
controller work great in CentOS 5 (or F7, for that matter), if I specifically
mount it.
This is not how I want to have to use this drive, however. I want to hotplug
it; that is, plug the controller into the laptop, and then

Any experience with eSATA and port multiplier...?
Hey,
just bought an eSATA/USB dual drive docking station and my CentOS 5 can only see one drive at a time...
Any one knows if there are specific parameters to set somewhere?
Or do I need a more recent kernel (like upgrading to CentOS 6?)
The docking is a Sharkoon Quickport Duo v2 + 2 drives + 1 eSATA cable...

how do export a block device via eSATA?
Does any one know how to, if at all possible currently, to export a
block device via eSATA? i.e. how do I do something like iSCSI, but
over eSATA?
I have a cheat ($15 probably?) media player at home (Egreat EG-M31B
Network Media Tank - awesome little machine) that runs some flavor of
Debian and can be connected to any PC via eSATA as an external HDD's.
i.e. it exports the built-in HDD as a

Updating kernel driver module questions
I am running CentOS 4.7, presently on an older box (PIII slot 1
processor @ 500mhz with 384meg of RAM, using SCSI disks with an
AHA-2940 host controller). I have built a new box: AMH Semporon
2.<mumble> GHZ, 2gig of RAM. I put in a AHA-29160 host controller (uses
same driver as the AHA-2940). The motherboard is an ASROCK thing with

Hi,
I'm looking for SATA controller with a eSATA port that is supported by Centos 4.4 ( rhel 4.4)
Do you have any suggestions for a eSATA controller with good Linux support ?
How can I list the sata controllers supported by Centos 4.4 ?

Controlling the order of /dev/sdX devices?
Hi
CentOS 5.4(final) 2.6.18-164el5PAE. I am trying to prevent removable
USB and eSATA devices from occupying /dev/sdX devices ahead of a 3ware
RAID controller. For example: at boot, if a USB drive and eSATA HDD
(connected to an LSI 1068E onboard controller, reflashed in "IT" mode to
handle hotplug devices) were both present, they would occupy devices
/dev/sdb and /dev/sdc, ahead of

e-sata
Hi,
Does anybody has any experience with e-sata on CentOS5.2?
- How fast is it? Same as an internal sata?
- Does it support sata-2?
- Does it "hot-plug" like a USB?

Motherboard for home zfs/solaris file server
Hello,
I am building a home file server and am looking for an ATX mother board
that will be supported well with OpenSolaris (onboard SATA controller,
network, graphics if any, audio, etc). I decided to go for Intel based
boards (socket LGA 775) since it seems like power management is better
supported with Intel processors and power efficiency is an important
factor. After reading several

SIL3114 and sparc solaris 10
Perhaps a bit off-topic (I asked on the rescue list --
http://web.archiveorange.com/archive/v/OaDWVGdLhxWVWIEabz4F -- and was
told to try here), but I am kinda shooting in the dark: I have been
finding online scattered and vague info stating that this card can be
made to work with a sparc solaris 10 box
