Seeking Assistance: Plotting Sea Current Vectors in R
Hi Kostas,
The function vectorField in the plotrix package may do what you want.
See the example.

Oceanographic lattice plots?
R 1.8.0 on Windows XP Professional. A huge THANK YOU to the R Team for
this marvelous software.
I am making lattice plots of oceanographic data. The usual layout does not
conform to plotting conventions that marine scientists use when depth is
the independent variable. Under those conventions, plots are made with the
origin at the upper left, depth on the vertical axis (increasing as it

Computational Ecologist Job at NOAA in Silver Spring, MD -- Marine Wildlife Spatial Modeling in R
The NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science is hiring a
Computational Ecologist, a statistical/computational ecologist with
experience fitting advanced spatial models to marine wildlife survey
data (e.g., seabirds and marine mammal transects, fisheries trawl
surveys) in R and other statistical languages. This is a full-time,
long-term stable contract position. We are looking for an

k-d tree for loess
I am exploring the use of loess for oceanographic applications and would
like to plot the locations (longitude and latitude) points where the models
(salinity~temperature*longitude*latitude,parametric="temperature") are
fitted. Chambers and Hastie(1993) explains the locations are nodes of a
k-d tree. but I cannot find anything about accessing this information. It

need help with smooth.spline
Dear R listers,
When using smooth.spline to interpolate data, results are generally
good. However, some cases produce totally unreasonable results.
The data are values of pressure, temperature, and salinity from a
probe that is lowered into the ocean, and the objective is to
interpolate temperature and salinity to specified pressures. While
smooth.spline provides excellent values at the

Computations slow in spite of large amounts of RAM.
Hi all,
I am a beginner trying to use R to work with large amounts of
oceanographic data, and I find that computations can be VERY slow. In
particular, computational speed seems to depend strongly on the number
and size of the objects that are loaded (when R starts up). The same
computations are significantly faster when all but the essential
objects are removed. I am running R on a machine

question on axis box with asp=1
I've been using (and loving) R for quite a while now, but I have to
admit that something simple is still stumping me.
The question is how I can control the box within which a plot is
drawn, in cases where I'm controlling the aspect ratio with the "asp"
argument.
The problem comes up in pdf() and png() output formats, but also with
interactive windows, and so I'll

Differencing data by groups
Colleagues,
I am analyzing data collected during oceanographic cruises. We have
conducted many cruises over the last decade. On each cruise we visit ~50
stations. At each station (termed EventNum)we lower an instrument that
measures depth, temperature, salinity and oxygen every few seconds as it is
lowered through the water. Data from all EventNums on all cruises are
stacked, generating a data

What's the point of UseDNS?
According to the manpage:
UseDNS Specifies whether sshd should look up the remote host name and
check that the resolved host name for the remote IP address maps back to
the very same IP address. The default is ``yes''.
Thing is, while sshd *checks*, this doesn't actually control whether or
not the client is allowed to connect, it seems at most to be an option
that causes

Remote MWI via IAX?
We have a couple of Asterisk boxes with one being the main system with
everyone's voicemail and the other a slave used merely to link a couple
of remote phones to the main system using IAX.
How can one propagate message waiting indication from the main system to
the remote phones?

Sorry guys; I got a bit lost about Gene's request on this thread;

it's all we need to see the relationship between the

Did you get handles.txt? is it available for download somewhere?

Array as time series?
Dear R-helpers,
I have 4-dimensional atmospheric data (x,y,z,t), which I want to analyse
on spatio-temporal diversities.
As far as I understand there only exists the possibility to construct
time series as two-dimensional matrices (mts).
For the moment, I hold it in different objects:
1. a four-dimensional array for the spatial related analyses
2. a two-dimensional mts timeserie, which was

[RAILS] - 2.3.3 creating a sea of red
hello,
I''ve already asked via Rails channels on this and have received no
response, so I''m asking here in hopes someone has run into something
similar.
I updated to rails 2.3.3 yesterday, and now all of my specs are
failing with the following error:
Fixture::FormatError in ''PublishedGallery Methods#thumbnail should
delegate to its lead asset''
a YAML error

How can I get the the standard error and confidence interval for the
prediction in a multiple regression model using the R command?
for a simple regression I used
*predict(xc, newdata=data.frame(var1=10.),se=T)
where xc is the glm model using binomial and var1 is teh variable.

I can get the upper and lower intervals of the prediction
Any help is welcome

Before I tell you about the problem, let me tell you my setup.
I am using Gentoo Linux on x86 and my wine version is 0.9.8. I installed WINE
using "emerge wine"
I have XOrg v7 installed.

Offline change detection methods?
Dear [R] people, I am looking for a method to test if there are any
changes (jump points) in a time series data set or not. If there are, I
would like to identify the jump points. All the data is available from the
beginning so an offline method could be used.
The current data set that I have could be seen as a time series with
five almost equally sized segments that stands out to have different
