Rails vs. J2EE: Sharing state in memory?
Hi, I am from a Java background and pretty new to Ruby and Rails. What I am wondering is how I would shared state accross requests and users without involving IO, i.e. use memory. My current understanding is that for each request a new process ist spawn and therefore it gets its own memory. So no sharing can take place between requests? Do I understand this right? For those who know

Caching application data
Hi, say my application has a small 20 row information table in the database that stores names of airlines: "continental", "delta", united" , etc... These names will be used in various pages of the application for all the website users for different actions. They do not expect to change often. what I do now is - when a user logs in - these airline names are queried

mysql mem-tables vs. memcached
Could someone please elaborate on the technical differences and practical impact of whether choosing memory-based tables in MySQL or using memcached. I got this far on my own: It seems that MySQL uses the NDB engine for transaction-safe memory access in a cluster. the memory storage engine seems to be faster but not synchronizable by any means in a cluster. memcached seems to be ultimately fast

Connection to backgroundrb is lost when exiting action method
Hey. I have a very annoying problem, and was wondering what is wrong. Suppose I have backgroundrb running, and then I have an action in some controller. In the action I define a worker. When leaving the action, suddenly the connection to backgroundrb is lost: DRb URI: druby://localhost:22222 Pid: 3976 Autostart... done druby://localhost:42531 - #<Errno::EBADF: Bad file descriptor -

Question about how Mongrel process works with singletons
Hi, I have a controller where I access a singleton class that I use to connect to a DRbprocess DrbConnector.instance.some_method I notice that on every request, the constructor is called so it is making a new instance of this singleton. Is this normal? Thanks, Curtis

creating a cache in rails
I need to create a small hash of values that persists across requests in Rails. I cannot store this information in the database or filesystem and only want to do it in memory. I was looking for a simple solution to implement this and read somewhere that memcache is pretty much overkill. This app is only running on one server so putting in memory should be just fine. I''m very new to

Creating workers from workers?
Since MiddleMan is an uninitialized constant in a worker how do you create new workers inside a worker? Req: Workers as singletons
Hi, it would be nice to be able to specify workers as singletons. By this I mean that every call to the new_worker method returns the same instance of said worker. This can be done transparently either by adding a new argument to new_worker (something like :singleton => true) or adding a new method, like I did in my installation of BackgrounDrb: def get_worker_by_class(klass)

Global Data, where can it go?
I''m developing a stateful Ruby application that needs to keep data in one location where all people accessing the site can modify its contents. This data will be read-from/written to often, so I would prefer for rails to keep it in memory, rather than a database. My frist try involved global variables. After discovering that they were being "re-initialized" with each new

How is Actionpack is not thread-safe? @@allow_concurrency?
Hi, I found many references on the Web to the fact that "Rails is not thread-safe". However, I have not found an explanation _why_ it isn''t? What happens if multiple requests are handled concurrently by ActionPack? Assuming that the code I execute in my controller methods is thread safe, is this ok? If not -- what happens? The following makes it sound like the issue is

Expiring Cache Fragments and fcgi
First let me say that Rails caching is very very cool. The traffic (and responsiveness) I''ve saved by added 10 lines of ruby code would be enourmous, if I actually had traffic... ;) Sweepers as observers are great, btw. Since every page of my side is dynamic, once I did some DB optimization I''m caching the content of the index page which was taking the bulk of the time to load

mongrel thread safety and global variables
In environment.rb file, I initialize a connection to some data vending servers, through TCP sockets. The connection object is global and hence the code: #environment.rb $generic_connection = ConnectionClass.instance (singleton class) $generic_connection.connect_me( this call will make the connection) The above approach is to make sure that, only one connection is made to the data vending

Memory leak?
I am using BackgrounDRb to resize images after they are accepted into our system. However, it has become clear that this creates a memory leak. I''m not sure exactly where the leak exists, but I don''t think it''s in my own code as it is presently being used in production and has resized thousands of images without a leak occurring, thanks to calling GC.start

Newcomer perceived problems with AAF/Ferret
I blogged about some of the problems with aaf in production (http://www.jroller.com/BrightCandle) yesterday but inspired by the poitive response I thought I would share the perceived problems and discuss some of the potential solutions to help newcomers and make aaf work as if by magic just like Rails does. All of these problems boil down to one simple problem, running acts as ferret in a

Performance suggestions or best practices ideas?
Any suggestions on applications that involve alot of calcualtions on a fairly large data set? My app uses a set of raw data ~5k, applies some default/override rules on the raw data and does some calculations on the data in combination with a list of assumptions. A ranked list along with detailed metrics is generated. The end user can manipulate some of the rules and assumptions to generate

Please: Desperately Seeking Session expiration (DRbStore)
Hello, this is killing me: i can''t find a way to let idle sessions expire after a certain period of time. If they don''t expire, they will pile up until there''s no more memory available. Please, can anybody give me a hint? Basically, all I need is a hash or list with all the sessions in DRbStore. Greetings Michael Kastner

[Tip] Application Wide Context Howto
Friends- I see more and more folks wanting an application wide context object that will work regardless of server software(webrick, mongrel, fcgi''s, scgi''s) This can be a very useful technique if done correctly. Here is a little info that I have gleaned on a great way to do this type of thing. -----Easy AppServer---------------- An easy way to get yourself an

Meta-question: anonymity makes me cranky
Fellow mongrelians, forgive a slightly off-topic rant; my hope is that it can lead to a better world. In the past few months, I have seen an increase in "anonymous" questions on this list, "anonymous" in the sense that the sender names do not resemble real human names, and also in the sense that the messages have not been signed. Just today, we have seen "Geek Moth

how about the global data when multiple backgroundrbs ?
Ezra, Suppose a chatroom application, a RailsApp + 2 backgroundrbs: MiddleMan1& MiddleMan2, running in 2 machines. When Chater1 login, RailsApp call MiddleMan1 to get something about Chater1 from db to memory, like his contacts or other personal settings. When Chater2 login, RailsApp call MiddleMan2 do the same thing. But who is reponsible for the Global Data? like a Online Chaters
