zfs mirroring question
I create two zfs''s on one pool of four disks with two mirrors, such as...
/
zpool create tank mirror disk1 disk2 mirror disk3 disk4
zfs create tank/fs1
zfs create tank/fs2/
Are fs1 and fs2 striped across all four disks?
If two disks fail that represent a 2-way mirror, do I lose data?
Brian.

How to delegate filesystems from different pools to non-global zone
I''m trying to add filesystems from two different pools to a zone but can''t seem to find any mention of how to do this in the docs.
I tried this but the second set overwrites the first one.
add dataset
set name=pool1/fs1
set name=pool2/fs2
end
Is this possible or do I need to use different syntax?

Privileges
Hi all!
I need a non-root user to be able to perform zfs snapshots and rollbacks.
Does anybody know what privileges that should be specified in
/etc/user_attr ?
Best regards,

Lots of overhead with ZFS - what am I doing wrong?
I was trying to simply test bandwidth that Solaris/ZFS (Nevada b63) can deliver from a drive, and doing this:
dd if=(raw disk) of=/dev/null gives me around 80MB/s, while dd if=(file on ZFS) of=/dev/null gives me only 35MB/s!?. I am getting basically the same result whether it is single zfs drive, mirror or a stripe (I am testing with two Seagate 7200.10 320G drives hanging off the same interface

NFS question (and Best Practices)
I saw in another post that a best practices doc will be coming, but I figured I would try to get this working.
I''m trying to understand why zfs uses so many "zfs create" so I can use it better. What makes sense is that each zfs fs can have it''s own options (compression, nfs, atime, quota, etc). I really love this because it is so tuneable -- compression on these

same netbios aliases on multiple servers
Hi
Can I set the same netbios name on multiple servers?
more precisely why it does not work?
server A
[global]
netbios name = FS1
netbios aliases = fs fs.example.ru
server B
[global]
netbios name = FS2
netbios aliases = fs fs.example.ru

Cannot share RW, "Permission Denied" with sharenfs in ZFS
Hi everyone,
I have just installed Solaris and have added a 3x500GB raidz drive array. I am able to use this pool (''tank'') successfully locally, but when I try to share it remotely, I can only read, I cannot execute or write. I didn''t do anything other than the default ''zfs set sharenfs=on tank''... how can I get it so that any allowed user can access

nfs sharing of zfs sub filesystems - can it be done?
I''m new to zfs and opensolaris and so am not sure of the correct terminology for this question.
I have a test machine running opensolaris 2008.11 (which I have been very impressed with so far). It has 1 disc for boot and 3 as a zpool (called tank, as per the majority of the examples ;)) This machine is a test "SAN" for use by a second test machine running vmware ESX (the free

SMART
On Solaris x86, does zpool (or anything) support PATA (or SATA) IDE
SMART data? With the Predictive Self Healing feature, I assumed that
Solaris would have at least some SMART support, but what I''ve googled so
far has been discouraging.

a single nfs file system shared out twice with different permissions
I am trying to configure a system where I have two different NFS shares
which point to the same directory. The idea is if you come in via one path,
you will have read-only access and can''t delete any files, if you come in
the 2nd path, then you will have read/write access.
For example, create the read/write nfs share:
zfs create tank/snapshots
zfs set sharenfs=on tank/snapshots
root

copy complete zpool via zfs send/recv
Hi,
I want to move all the ZFS fs from one pool to another, but I don''t want
to "gain" an extra level in the folder structure on the target pool.
On the source zpool I used zfs snapshot -r tank at moveTank on the root fs
and I got a new snapshot in all sub fs, as expected.
Now, I want to use zfs send -R tank at moveTank | zfs recv targetTank/...
which would place all zfs fs

same netbios aliases on multiple servers
we have many branch, with different call quality, each branch, has a
samba DC with a file server, and in order not to create labels for each
branch, we set up a geo round robin on the DNS server.
branch A net 192.168.1.0/24
dc and fs 192.168.1.1 name fs1
branch B net 192.168.2.0/24

Export ZFS over NFS ?
I''ve got my first server deployment with ZFS.
Consolidating a pair of other file servers that used to have
a dozen or so NFS exports in /etc/dfs/dfstab similar to;
/export/solaris/images
/export/tools
/export/ws
..... and so on....
For the new server, I have one large zfs pool;
-bash-3.00# df -hl
bigpool 16T 1.5T 15T 10% /export
that I am starting to

zfs submounts and permissions with autofs
Hi,
Is it expected that if I have filesystem tank/foo and tank/foo/bar
(mounted under /tank) then in order to be able to browse via
/net down into tank/foo/bar I need to have group/other permissions
on /tank/foo open?
# zfs create tank/foo
# zfs create tank/foo/bar
# chown gavinm /tank/foo /tank/foo/bar
# zfs set sharenfs=rw tank/foo
# ls -laR /tank/foo
/tank/foo:

How to setup Rsync as an NT Service
For a recent project I needed to run Rsync as a service on Windows NT. The
following is a link to the instructions I created to recreate my steps.
http://members.home.net/cbollerud2/projects/rsync/NTService.html
The "no-fork" patch used here is very similar to the "no-detach" option
mentioned in many previous posts. I wish I could take credit for it, but I

RFE: ISCSI alias when shareiscsi=on
Starting from this thread:
http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=118786𝀂
I would love to have the possibility to set an ISCSI alias when doing an
shareiscsi=on on ZFS. This will greatly facilate to identify where an
IQN is hosted.
the ISCSI alias is defined in rfc 3721
e.g. http://www.apps.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3721.html#sec-2
and the CLI could be something like:

order bug, legacy mount and nfs sharing
Hi,
I''ve encountered this bug: http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=108316&tstart=30
and to obviate to the problem I''m using legacy mounts.
Now the system boot without problems, but nfs server doesn''t start because couldn''t find any share.
So I''ve disabled nfs with zfs set sharenfs=off on my zfs filesystems and tried to use the share
