nfs sharing of zfs sub filesystems - can it be done?
I''m new to zfs and opensolaris and so am not sure of the correct terminology for this question. I have a test machine running opensolaris 2008.11 (which I have been very impressed with so far). It has 1 disc for boot and 3 as a zpool (called tank, as per the majority of the examples ;)) This machine is a test "SAN" for use by a second test machine running vmware ESX (the free

ZFS / NFS with User and Group
Hi there, As very much a new convert top Opensolaris & similar environments - I''ve been trying to get my head around how ZFS relates to NFS when dealing with user/group permissions. In my case I have set up an Opensolaris system with a zfs pool with sharenfs on. Now, I would like several Linux client to be able to access this share depending on their username, as I''m

GNU ''cp -p'' can''t work well with ZFS-based-NFS

[Fwd: [Fwd: The results of iozone stress on NFS/ZFS and SF X4500 shows the very bad performance in read but good in write]]
Dear ALL, IHAC who would like to use Sun Fire X4500 to be the NFS server for the backend services, and would like to see the potential performance gain comparing to their existing systems. However the outputs of the I/O stress test with iozone show the mixed results as follows: * The read performance sharply degrades (almost down to 1/20, i.e from 2,000,000 down to 100,000) when the

cp -p gives errors on Linux w/ NFS-mounted ZFS
Hello all, I''m having the same problem here, any news? I need to use ACL''s on the GNU/Linux clients. I''m using nfsv3, and on the GNU/Linux servers that feature was working, i think we need a solution for solaris/opensolaris. Now, with the "dmm" project, how we can start a migration process, if we can not provide the same services on the target machine?

read/write NFS block size and ZFS
Hello all... I''m migrating a nfs server from linux to solaris, and all clients(linux) are using read/write block sizes of 8192. That was the better performance that i got, and it''s working pretty well (nfsv3). I want to use all the zfs'' advantages, and i know i can have a performance loss, so i want to know if there is a "recomendation" for bs on nfs/zfs, or

Solaris 10 x86 + ZFS / NFS server "cp" problem with AIX
Friends, I have recently built a file server on x2200 with solaris x86 having zfs (version4) and running NFS version2 & samba. the AIX 5.2 & AIX 5.2 client give error while running command "cp -R <zfs_nfs_mount_source> <zfs_nfs_mount_desticantion> as below: cp: 0653-440 directory/1: name too long. cp: 0653-438 cannot read directory directory/1. and the cp core dumps in

indiana as nfs server: crash due to zfs
hello all, i have indiana freshly installed on a sun ultra 20 machine. It only does nfs server. During one night, the kernel had crashed, and i got this messages: " May 22 02:18:57 ultra20 unix: [ID 836849 kern.notice] May 22 02:18:57 ultra20 ^Mpanic[cpu0]/thread=ffffff0003d06c80: May 22 02:18:57 ultra20 genunix: [ID 603766 kern.notice] assertion failed: sm->sm_space == 0 (0x40000000 ==

ZFS NFS cannot write
This is the first time I tried nfs with zfs. I shared the zfs filesystem with nfs, but i can''t write to the files though i mount it as read-write. This is for Solaris 10 update 4. I wonder if there is a bug? ---------------server (sdw2-2) #zfs create -o sharenfs=on data/nfstest #zfs get all data/nfstest NAME PROPERTY VALUE SOURCE data/nfstest type

Round-robin NFS protocol with ZFS
Hello all, I was thinking if such scenario could be possible: 1 - Export/import a ZFS filesystem in two solaris servers. 2 - Export that filesystem (NFS). 3 - Mount that filesystem on clients in two different mount points (just to authenticate in both servers/UDP). 4a - Use some kind of "man-in-the middle" to auto-balance the connections (the same IP on servers) or 4b - Use different

Odd behavior of NFS of ZFS versus UFS
I have a test cluster running HA-NFS that shares both ufs and zfs based file systems. However, the behavior that I am seeing is a little perplexing. The Setup: I have Sun Cluster 3.2 on a pair of SunBlade 1000''s connecting to two T3B partner groups through a QLogic switch. All four bricks of the T3B are configured as RAID-5 with a hot spare. One brick from each pair is mirrored with VxVM

ZFS disables nfs/server on a host
I have an Ultra 10 client running Sol10 U3 that has a zfs pool set up on the extra space of the internal ide disk. There''s just the one fs and it is shared with the sharenfs property. When this system reboots nfs/server ends up getting disabled and this is the error from the SMF logs: [ Apr 16 08:41:22 Executing start method ("/lib/svc/method/nfs-server start") ] [ Apr 16

zfs+nfs: scary nfs log entries?
I have a zfs dataset that I use for network home directories. The box is running 2008.11 with the auto-snapshot service enabled. To help debug some mysterious file deletion issues, I''ve enabled nfs logging (all my clients are NFSv3 Linux boxes). I keep seeing lines like this in the nfslog:

Wed Aug 19 10:20:48 2009 0 host.name.domain.com 1168

Why does disable loading of zfs module in boot causes
Hello, I tried to disable loading of the zfs module by adding "exclude zfs" in /etc/system. I rebooted and got into "maintainance mode" with many services disbaled (as svcs -xv shows). I don''t have any zfs partitons on this machine. So my question is: for what is the zfs module in booting of solaris ? Why can''t it be disabled? Regards, David This message

ZFS/NFS - SC 3.2 and AVS - HOWTO [SOLVED]
Hello, I will try to concentrate in this post the informations about the configurations that i''m deploying, thinking that it should be usefull for somebody else.. The objective of my tests is: High Availability services with ZFS/NFS on solaris 10 using a two-node Sun Cluster. The scenarios are two: 1) Using "shared discs" (global devices). 2) Using "non-shared

ZFS snapshots and NFS
Hello all, Sorry if you think that question is stupid, but i need to ask.. Imagine a normal situation on a NFS server with "N" client nodes. The objects of the shares is software (/usr/ for instance), and the admin wants to make available new versions of a few packages. So, would be nice if the admin could associate a NFS share and a ZFS snapshot? I mean, the admin have the option

NFS, nested ZFS filesystems and ownership
Hello, I''m sure there is a simple solution, but I am unable to figure this one out. Assuming I have tank/fs, tank/fs/fs1, tank/fs/fs2, and I set sharenfs=on for tank/fs (child filesystems are inheriting it as well), and I chown user:group /tank/fs, /tank/fs/fs1 and /tank/fs/fs2, I see: ls -la /tank/fs user:group . user:group fs1 user:group fs2 user:group some_other_file If I mount

ZFS+NFS+refquota: full filesystems still return EDQUOT for unlink()
We have been using ZFS for user home directories for a good while now. When we discovered the problem with full filesystems not allowing deletes over NFS, we became very anxious to fix this; our users fill their quotas on a fairly regular basis, so it''s important that they have a simple recourse to fix this (e.g., rm). I played around with this on my OpenSolaris box at home, read around

ZFS and disk usage management?
After struggling for some time to try and wedge a ZFS file server into our environment, I have come to the conclusion that I''m simply going to have to live without quotas. They have been immensely useful in the past 5 years or so in allowing us to keep track of which groups are hogging disk space, and even finding a bug in one manufacturing/engineering tool which occasionally crashed in a
