proxy errors with apache2.2.3 + mongrels
I''ve posted this to rails-deployment as well.
I have to administer a medium size rails app (1''5 million requests
each day), recently I''ve switched from lighttpd + fcgi to apache +
mongrel. In the following lines I am going to describe the platform:
All machines are running Debian Etch, with 4 gb ram and dual core
intel32 processors. Web server runs debian''s

Why Rails + mongrel_cluster + load balancing doesn''t work for us and the beginning of a solution
We have been searching for a Rails deployment architecture which works for
us for some time. We''ve recently moved from Apache 1.3 + FastCGI to Apache
2.2 + mod_proxy_balancer + mongrel_cluster, and it''s a significant
improvement. But it still exhibits serious performance problems.
We have the beginnings of a fix that we would like to share.
To illustrate the problem, imagine a

Output Compression in Mongrel?
I''d like to implement output compression in Mongrel (ala Apache''s
mod_deflate). I have found a Rails plugin that, with minor modification,
works.
Is there even an advantage to moving the output compression from the Rails
app to a Mongrel handler?
Unless, of course, someone knows how to configure mod_proxy_balancer with
mod_deflate...

[somewhat OT] Apache config for Rails + ColdFusion + PHP
Our group has several web apps developed in ColdFusion, PHP, and Rails. The
ColdFusion and PHP apps are on an older server, and the Rails apps on a new
server. Ideally, we''d like them all to share the same server.
Our current setup for the Rails server is Apache2.2 with mod_proxy_balancer
and mongrel_cluster. We''d like to have specific directories be processed

NOT FOUND error
I''ve been hunting the web and reading the mailing lists all day but
I''m not finding any guidance on this problem. When I try to talk to my
mongrel it simply responds with NOT FOUND and nothing else. I can''t
find anything on google because this has to be the second most commond
phrase in existence.
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,

recommended setup of Mongrel_cluster + SSL for multiple apps?
I''d like to use Mongrel_cluster with SSL on a green-field application (it
can be configured however is best - initially, "ease of setup" is important,
but then soon after will be scaling and response time). I''ve read a lot of
emails on this topic, and checked out the Mongrel pages, etc, but I''m left
with this question of what is recommended:

Apache 2.2, ProxyPass and HTTPS
Hi all,
I''m currently trying to get Mongrel running my app whilst fronted by
apache 2.2 in a sub-directory via https. A bit convoluted I''ll grant
you but necessitated by existing systems.
The pertinent parts of my httpd.conf:
<VirtualHost 123.123.123.123:12345> #historic choice of random port number
DocumentRoot /var/www/admin
ServerName admin.example.com:12345

compress and max upload size?
I am using mongrel_cluster with mod_proxy_balancer and would like to
enable compression (assuming it improves throughtput) and limit file
size upload. I configured mod_deflate and LimitRequestSize in Apache,
but in my trials looks like the proxied calls bypass those directives
(the conf goes below).
Is there a way to get this?

multiple mongrel clusters
If this was in the docs, I''ve missed it. How can I have multiple
mongrel clusters on a server? All the documentation that I am seeing
seems to assume that I am only running one cluster.

Apache/Mongrel Question
I''m setting up a new server in anticipation of switching from lighttpd+fcgi. My application isn''t completely imported yet, so I don''t expect it to work. For instance right now when pulling up my app from localhost I get my Ruby/Rails MySQL error message. But when I pull it up from a remote computer I get a proxy error from Apache:

New automated Capistrano setup for Apache2.1+ and mongrel_cluster
Hi mongrel users!
I just posted a bad-ass capistrano file that automates *everything*
for setting up an apache2+mod_proxy_balancer and
mongrel+mongrel_cluster -- including apache2 setups. It''s based off
Coda Hale''s guide and all Bradley''s work at fluxura and RailsMachine
(thanks Coda and Bradley!).
It''s, well, bad-ass, if I must say so myself. My favorite

mod_proxy_balancer mod_rewrite permission issue
I started the mongrel_cluster and tried to use the RewriteRule to forward
the requests to proxy_balancer just as the
http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/docs/apache.html said.
When I visited my site from a remote computer, I always got the error
messages "Forbidden, You don''t have permission to access / on this server."
Finally, I added the "Allow from all" property (in the

Again: Workaround found for request queuing vs. num_processors, accept/close
Hello all.
I too found out that I sometimes have some action that can take up to 10
seconds in my rails application. I''ve read all arguments Zed made about
polling/and inbox strategies, and I think I just can''t work around my feeling
that a "wrong" request that takes up too much time should be able to lock
subsequent requests in mongrels queue. That''s what

Apache+mod_proxy_balancer+Mongrel+Mephisto, Apache kills CPU
Our Mephisto install kills Mongrels and causes Apache to pound the
CPU. This started when we moved to Apache+mod_proxy_balancer+Mongrel.
Here''s what we know:
The following things are working OK, except when used in the
combination listed above: mongrel, mongrel_rails, MySQL, Apache,
mod_proxy_balancer. We believe these are all OK because we moved five
other Rails apps to this

[PATCH] HTTP accept filter support for FreeBSD
This small patch extends configure_socket_options to support FreeBSD''s
accf_http(9), which defers accept() until there''s a full HTTP request
to read.
Seems to work fine on 6.1-STABLE. DragonflyBSD should work too provided
the /freebsd/ line is modified to match it.

Apache2.2 + Mongrel: what do you think about these perfs?
Hi all,
I''ve been spending quite a lot of time trying to install a decent RoR
server on my dedicated server (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS), and now, everything
works.
However, the performances are not really what I had expected... I would
like to know what you think about it.
Here is my config: 2GHz VIA proc, 1Gb RAM, SATA-II HD.
I have apt-got ruby 1.8.4, mysql5 and installed rails 1.1.4 by
