Deterioration with zfs performace and recent zfs bits?
Has anyone else noticed a significant zfs performance deterioration
when running recent opensolaris bits?
My 32-bit / 768 MB Toshiba Tecra S1 notebook was able to do a
full opensolaris release build in ~ 4 hours 45 minutes (gcc shadow
compilation disabled; using an lzjb compressed zpool / zfs on a
single notebook hdd p-ata drive).
After upgrading to 2007-05-25 opensolaris release bits

Some performance questions with ZFS/NFS/DNLC at snv_48
Hello.
We''re currently using a Sun Blade1000 (2x750MHz, 1G ram, 2x160MB/s mpt
scsi buses, skge GigE network) as a NFS backend with ZFS for
distribution of free software like Debian (cdimage.debian.org,
ftp.se.debian.org) and have run into some performance issues.
We are running SX snv_48 and have run with a raidz2 with 7x300G for a
while now, just added another 7x300G raidz2 today but

6Tb Database with ZFS
Hello,
Im about to migrate a 6Tb database from Veritas Volume Manager to ZFS, I
want to set arc_max parameter so ZFS cant use all my system''s memory, but i
dont know how much i should set, do you think 24Gb will be enough for a 6Tb
database? obviously the more the better but i cant set too much memory.
Have someone implemented succesfully something similar?
We ran some test and the

ARC cache issues with b35/b36; Bugs 6397610 / 6398177

Terrible performance when setting zfs_arc_max snv_98
Hi there.
I just got a new Adaptec RAID 51645 controller in because the old (other type) was malfunctioning. It is paired with 16 Seagate 15k5 disks, of which two are used with hardware RAID 1 for OpenSolaris snv_98, and the rest is configured as striped mirrors as a zpool. I created a zfs filesystem on this pool with a blocksize of 8K.
This server has 64GB of memory and will be running

Preparing to compare Solaris/ZFS and FreeBSD/ZFS performance.
Hi.
I''m all set for doing performance comparsion between Solaris/ZFS and
FreeBSD/ZFS. I spend last few weeks on FreeBSD/ZFS optimizations and I
think I''m ready. The machine is 1xQuad-core DELL PowerEdge 1950, 2GB
RAM, 15 x 74GB-FC-10K accesses via 2x2Gbit FC links. Unfortunately the
links to disks are the bottleneck, so I''m going to use not more than 4
disks, probably.

Strange performance loss
I''m moving some data off an old machine to something reasonably new.
Normally, the new machine performs better, but I have one case just now
where the new system is terribly slow.
Old machine - V880 (Solaris 8) with SVM raid-5:
# ptime du -kds foo
15043722 foo
real 6.955
user 0.964
sys 5.492
And now the new machine - T5140 (latest Solaris 10) with ZFS

C''mon ARC, stay small...
Running an mmap-intensive workload on ZFS on a X4500, Solaris 10 11/06
(update 3). All file IO is mmap(file), read memory segment, unmap, close.
Tweaked the arc size down via mdb to 1GB. I used that value because
c_min was also 1GB, and I was not sure if c_max could be larger than
c_min....Anyway, I set c_max to 1GB.
After a workload run....:
> arc::print -tad

current zfs tuning in RELENG_7 (AMD64) suggestions ?
I gave the AMD64 version of 7.2 RC2 a spin and all installed as
expected off the dvd
INTEL S3200SHV MB, Core2Duo, 4G of RAM
In the past it had been suggested that for zfs tuning, something like
vm.kmem_size_max="1073741824"
vm.kmem_size="1073741824"
vfs.zfs.prefetch_disable=1
However doing a simple test with bonnie and dd, there does not seem
to be very much difference in

recommended memory for zfs
Hello zfs question about memory.
I heard zfs is very ram hungry.
Service looking to run:
- nginx
- postgres
- php-fpm
- python
I have a machine with two quad core cpus but only 4 G Memory
I'm looking to buy more ram now.
What would be the recommend amount of memory for zfs across 6 drives on
this setup?
Also can 9.1 now boot to zfs from the installer?
(no tricks for post install)
Thanks

recommended setup for amd64 7-STABLE with ZFS, Samba 3.2 and possibly ACLs?
Hi,
could anyone give recommendations (or share experience) regarding
using ZFS:
- FreeBSD 7-Stable (amd64 with 8GB RAM)
+ special tuning necessary (apart from increasing kernel memory
to 1 or more GB for ZFS)
- Samba 3.2
+ ACLs possible directly under ZFS?
+ recommended compile options?
- NFS
- email (imap)
- jails (I have seen some problems exist with using snaphots within

Filebench Performance is weird
Greeting All
I am using Filebench benchmark in an "Interactive mode" to test ZFS

My Filebench setting & run results are as follwos

stat() performance on files on zfs vs. ufs
Hi,
Bug ID: 6775100 stat() performance on files on zfs should be improved was fixed in snv_119.
I wanted to do a quick comparison between snv_117 and snv_122 on my workstation to see what kind of improvement there is. I wrote a small C program which does a stat() N times in a loop. This is of course a micro-benchmark. Additionally it doesn''t cover a case if doing stat() on not cached

ZFS and memory usage.
ZFS works really stable on FreeBSD, but I''m biggest problem is how to
control ZFS memory usage. I''ve no idea how to leash that beast.
FreeBSD has a backpresure mechanism. I can register my function so it
will be called when there are memory problems, which I do. I using it
for ARC layer.
Even with this in place under heavy load the kernel panics, because

sub-optimal ZFS performance
Hello,
ZFS is behaving strange on a OSOL laptop, your thoughts are welcome.
I am running OSOL on my laptop, currently b124 and i found that the
performance of ZFS is not optimal in all situations. If i check the
how much space the package cache for pkg(1) uses, it takes a bit
longer on this host than on comparable machine to which i transferred
all the data.

ZFS monitoring - best practices?
We''re starting to grow our ZFS environment and really need to start
standardizing our monitoring procedures.
OS tools are great for spot troubleshooting and sar can be used for
some trending, but we''d really like to tie this into an SNMP based
system that can generate graphs for us (via RRD or other).
Whether or not we do this via our standard enterprise monitoring tool

Is there a waf to safely flush ARC cache (get most of ZFS memory back to system)?

ARC Tail
Greeting All
Can any one help me figure out the size of the ARC tail, i.e, the portion in
ARC that l2_feed thread is reading from before pages are evicted from ARC.
Is the size of this tail proportional to total ARC size ? L2ARC device
size ? is tunable ??????
your feed back is highly appreciated

ARC, mmap, pagecache...
Hi,
I was wondering about the ARC and its interaction with the VM
pagecache... When a file on a ZFS filesystem is mmaped, does the ARC
cache get mapped to the process'' virtual memory? Or is there another copy?
