CentOS (2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp) and CentOS (2.6.9-42.0.8.EL)
List,
I am experimenting with a Dual processor Supermicro and plan to use
CentOS 5 when it is released. In the meantime I have installed Centos
4.4. Sorry for asking such a basic question but what is the difference
between CentOS (2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp) and CentOS (2.6.9-42.0.8.EL) Both
kernels have been installed, but I have not been able to find which one
is best to use for what purposes.

2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp
Hi,
I currently have a few CentOs 4.X servers running the latest stock
2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp kernel.
I notice kernel.org are now up to version 2.6.18 and many people are using
the 2.6.17.11
Does anyone have any opinions with regards to the 17.11 and .18 kernels?
I'm led to believe the latest centos stock kernels are the same anyway as
are the backported Redhat ones.

2.6.9-42.ELsmp kernel and 3ware 9550 tools
I have the latest kernel with the drivers for my 3ware 9550SX built in.
Where
can I find the tools and monitoring apps for this card? Are there rpms
hiding
somewhere, or do I need to build it from source?

2.4.21-27.0.1.ELsmp & megaraid2 problem
I've found a problem with CentOS 3 latest kernel (2.4.21-27.0.1.ELsmp)
and megaraid2 driver.
Hardware: Dell PE1600SC with CERC ATA100 RAID controller
The problem is somewhat similar, but not identical as:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=123289
After updating new glibc and kernel packages the new kernel don't boot.

Kernel 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp
Has anyone had any issues with this latest kernel?
We rebooted our servers into this new kernel yesturday and our internet
conectivity broke. I fiddled arround with some of the setting to get our
machines talking to the net again with no success. It seems that we are
able to talk to local hosts on our network, but anything external is
broken. I gave up in the end and resorted to the previous

Centos-4.3: Filelocking problems under high [network related] load with kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp
Hi,
first of all, please CC me on any reply, as I am only subscribed to
the digest.
OK. Here is the problem. Said kernel (from 4.4) seems to have problems
with file-locking when the system is under high, likely network
related,
load. The symptoms are things using file locking (rpm, the user-space
automounter amd) fail to obtain locks, usually stating timeout
problems.

Kernel ELsmp vs EL
Hi all,
I'm not very used to CentOS and Linux generally speaking, though I read
a lot and 'man' quickly became a very good friend of mine, right after
Google, so sorry if that's a ridiculous one! (at least it'll give you a
good laugh!)
I updated the kernel to 2.6.9-42.0.2 recently and that raised a
question... Simple... Yet silly...! What exactly is the difference

Centos 4.4 Install bug
To the Centos maintainers:
We tried to install Centos 4.4 i386 (i686 / Athlon)
on a Dual Opteron 254 Iwill DK8N MB, 1GB (4 x 256M)
system with a 3ware 9500S-4 and 4 x 80 GB disks
in a RAID 10 array.
Both tries caused Centos to first kernel panic
until we turned off IO-APIC in the BIOS.
Both tries also only loaded the UP kernel
and did not load the smp kernel on the machine.
The smp kernel was

benchmarking large RAID arrays
I'm just wondering what folks are using to benchmark/tune large arrays
these days. I've always used bonnie with file sizes 2-3 times physical
RAM. Maybe there's a better way?
Cheers,

Wherefore is FUSE?
Tonight, I tried to roll out fuse on my CentOS 4 production system. (in order
to use GlusterFS)
I have two identical servers, and one took, the other didn't.
How simple could this be?
# yum install yum-plugin-priorities
# yum install rpmforge-release
# yum install fuse dkms-fuse
both of these seem to work. Yet I run
[root at kepler drivers]# modprobe fuse

kernel-devel: compile MPP/RDAC kernel module
Hi Centos Users
I am running Centos 4.6 wit latest updates. For I/O multipathing I
need to use kernel 2.6.9-55 (IBM support matrix). Trying to compile
Engenio Linux RDAC Driver[0]
I fail to install kernel-devel for this exact kernel (with up2date).
Up2date always installs the newest.
# make clean

How to get arcnet working with other-than-root accounts?
Hello!
I've successfully gotten the arcnet driver compiled and installed into a
Centos kernel. Admittedly,
with a lot of help. Currently, I'm using the following script to get
arcnet up and running:
cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.9/linux-2.6.9/drivers/net/arcnet
insmod arcnet.ko
insmod arc-rawmode.ko
insmod com20020.ko
insmod com20020-pci.ko node=3 device=arc0 timeout=3

GFS-kernel module - Version Magic Error
Are the RPMs for the latest GFS kernel module
GFS-kernel-2.6.9-72.2.0.8 to be used with the version 2.6.9-55.0.9.EL
available ? I tried to compile the Source RPMs available from the Red
Hat site but the modules can't be loaded because of invalid module
format arising from version magic issues. The syslog shows:

I can run CentOS without problem but I can't boot XP SP2. When I try it

Adding RAM
I have a server running Centos 4.7 32bit. Will moving from 4Gig of
RAM to 8Gig do any good? Since its 32bit I assume it will only be
able to address the first 4Gig not? When I installed CentOS I did not
do anything special to enable using more then 4Gig if thats required.
Exim, spamassassin and Clamd seem to be the biggest load on this
machine. My biggest bottle neck is disk I/O anyway.

CentOS 4.2: kernel version
Hello
Installing sw on a CentOS 4.2 (iso version) I notice that the kernel
version is
2.6.9-22.0.1.Elsmp
in RH4 UP2 the kernel version is 2.6.9-22.Elsmp
Some sw complain and check the kernel version.
Why this specific version extension 0.1 ?
Thanks for your help
