tar vs. star vs. something-else-I-don-t-know-about
Hello all,
today I've been sitting at work and upgrading a very-very-very old
server with RedHat Linux 6.2 installed up to CentOS 3.8. The process
went smoothly, as it is not the first time I was doing the things like
this. Just after upgrading I went to rpm -qai list and got an
interesting observation: there are at least two "tar" utilities installed
on the system.
One is tar, and

Alternatively, you can use `ext2online` to resize the filesystem while it is

up2date dependency problem
Greetings, centos.
Looks like postinstall scriplet in CentOS4.4 distro requires
/sbin/restorecon utility, which in turn resides in policycoreutils
package. Meanwhile, up2date don't require policycoreutils.
It seems to that there is an error in dependencies for up2date.

"undefined symbol: _pam_make_env"
Hello,
A while ago I downloaded and compiled PAM 0.99.x and installed it over
the default CentOS PAM installation. Of course, this premature decision
led to root and FTP access being fully locked down and inaccessible.
When I `su -`, it prints "su: incorrect password" before it gives me
the chance to type a password. When I `sudo su -`, it prints "sudo:

-all-static problems when linking apps which require -lpthread and -lc
Hello all,
I used to use fully statically linked PHP, which I build into RPM
using own-written spec-file. I need to do this as there are a lot of
boxes with old linuxes (RedHat 6.2, 7, 9) which I can't upgrade to
CentOS3/4 right now for a several reasons I don't want to explain
here.
When I've been using CentOS 4.0 and 4.1 - there were no big problems
to link PHP as static executable

[PATCH libldm 00/12] New API: an ability to retrieve created device-mapper devices back after they have been created.
The main goal of these patch series is to implement a new API that allows to retrieve created device-mapper devices for volumes and partitions back after they have been created.
As part of this patch:
- required libdevmapper version was bumped to 1.02. I think it is safe because it was released more then 10 years ago;
- newer version of libdevmapper allowed to simplify code base a little bit;

yum update conflict
I updated my i386 systems without any problems, but when I tried to
update one of my x86_64 systems, I got an error from yum.
Transaction Check Error: file /usr/include/libdevmapper.h from
install of device-mapper-1.02.02-3.0.RHEL4 conflicts with file from

So it can't install the newer package because it conflicts with the
older package???

LVM2 snapshots and XEN = problem :(
Hello guys
Does anyone use lvm2 backends for domU storages ? I do and I wanted to
use lvm''s snapshot feature to make backups of domUs in background but I
got the following problem.
When I create a snapshot LV and copy data from it to backup storage it
works perfect.
Then I do umount and then lvremove. lvremove asks me if I really want to
remove the volume and then just hangs forever.

Issues with installing Libvirt 1.2.7 on Ubuntu 12.04
Hi,
I am trying to manually install libvirt 1.2.7 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (64bit).
I have installed libxml2-dev libgnutls-dev libcurl4-gnutls-dev python-dev,
but I am facing dependency issues for libdevmapper libraries.
Is there any workaround for this dependency? OR is there any other way to
install libivirt 1.2.7 on Ubuntu 12.04.
Following is the output of the error

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 182292.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,

Device-mapper-multipath not working correctly with GNBD devices
Hi all,
I am trying to configure a failover multipath between 2 GNBD devices.
I have a 4 nodes Redhat Cluster Suite (RCS) cluster. 3 of them are used for
running services, 1 of them for central storage. In the future I am going to
introduce another machine for central storage. The 2 storage machine are
going to share/export the same disk. The idea is not to have a single point
of failure
