Moving/copying the MBR
Are there any tools for working with and moving or copying the MBR? My machine has 2 PATA drives (hda & hdb) and 2 SATA drives (sda & sdb). The MBR is on hda, but I would like (eventually or sooner) to boot from sda because it is two years newer, faster and, hopefully, more reliable. Even if I don't change that, I'd like a backup MBR on sda in case hda fails (hdb has gone sour a

Replacing a hard drive
I have a CentOS 4.4 system where all of the main filesystems are on a single hard drive. This drive is starting to give some errors, so I got a new (larger) drive to replace it with. What is the easiest way to copy my filesystems over to the new drive? I considered using dd, but I lose the extra capacity of the new drive that way. I tried using SystemImager, but it is giving me some errors. I

Setting up HP OfficeJet 5610 fax on CentOS 4.4 shared
Hi there, As the subject says, I'm trying to set up an HP OfficeJet 5610 on CentOS 4.4 for shared use across my machines. I've managed to get printing (through HPLIP/ CUPS/ SAMBA) and scanning (through SANE) shared; but I'm unable to get fax shared working. Is it possible to do that? The instructions on the HPLIP page talk about installing the 5610 as a fax device and then faxing

wireless card for CentOS
Hi, I'll need to buy a new wireless card. I need a recommendation for PCMCIA wireless card that simply works with CentOS out of the box. By "works out of the box", I mean that it doesn't need ndis wrapper (or whatever it is called), kernel hacks, or whatever. Thanks

How should I create a repo on Centos 2.1?
I tracked down a createrepo rpm "for RHL 7.x, AS 2.1" etc (hosted by Dag), but it's uninstallable. Eventually I managed to create an rpm from the source (actually, that's fairly easy when onw knows to say "python2"), but python-urlgrabber has completely defeated me. According to Dag, the problem is that "upstream" doesn't see the need to support

setting up incoming PPP on centos 4.4
hi gang! I'm interested in setting up incoming PPP on a system at work that has a fresh (not upgrade) Centos 4.4 on it. All the documentation I've found for that shows using mgetty to do it, and seems pretty straightforward. However, that machine doesn't have a binary named mgetty anywhere. It does have a mgetty-sendfax RPM installed, but it does not provide a binary named mgetty.

yum vs up2date
Which is better? Why? I know yum is the official update mechanism here and in Fedora Core, but that doesn't make yum better than up2date any more than Windows NT was better than OS/2. Let's try to keep the discussion objective:-) I'm asking, hoping for some insights into why RH might (apparently) be moving to yum in preference to up2date (yum is now used within Anaconda). Other

HVMAssist BIOS boot device problem
Hello, The xm config option boot="c" is intended to boot from the "first" harddrive; however, the enumeration of harddrives is independent of device enumeration (hda|hdb|hdc|hdd), leading to unreliable boot device selection. Example A: I am building a Windows HVM appliance which performs file-system level operations over mounted NTFS volumes - for example a file-system

openssl package possibly different in CentOS and RHEL
I've just had a problem on one of my x86_64 boxes with openssl package. I have an 32-bit only application that requires openssl libraries. When I attempted to install openssl.i686 (in addition to already present openssl.x86_64), it failed. The rpm complained about conflicting files (they were all manpages), and I needed to use --force option to install the thing. The good folks
