read/write NFS block size and ZFS
Hello all... I''m migrating a nfs server from linux to solaris, and all clients(linux) are using read/write block sizes of 8192. That was the better performance that i got, and it''s working pretty well (nfsv3). I want to use all the zfs'' advantages, and i know i can have a performance loss, so i want to know if there is a "recomendation" for bs on nfs/zfs, or

ZFS, home and Linux
Hello, I''m trying to implement a NAS server with solaris/NFS and, of course, ZFS. But for that, we have a little problem... what about the /home filesystem? I mean, i have a lot of linux clients, and the "/home" directory is on a NFS server (today, linux). I want to use ZFS, and change the "directory" home like /home/leal, to "filesystems" like /home/leal

ZFS/NFS - SC 3.2 and AVS - HOWTO [SOLVED]
Hello, I will try to concentrate in this post the informations about the configurations that i''m deploying, thinking that it should be usefull for somebody else.. The objective of my tests is: High Availability services with ZFS/NFS on solaris 10 using a two-node Sun Cluster. The scenarios are two: 1) Using "shared discs" (global devices). 2) Using "non-shared

Is round-robin I/O correct for ZFS?
I''m testing an Iscsi multipath configuration on a T2000 with two disk devices provided by a Netapp filer. Both the T2000 and the Netapp have two ethernet interfaces for Iscsi, going to separate switches on separate private networks. The scsi_vhci devices look like this in `format'': 1. c4t60A98000433469764E4A413571444B63d0 <NETAPP-LUN-0.2-50.00GB>

Cannot remove a file on a GOOD ZFS filesystem
Hello all, First off, i''m talking about a SXDE build 89. Sorry if that was discussed here before, but i did not find anything related on the archives, and i think is a "weird" issue... If i try to remove a specific file, i got: # rm file1 rm: file1: No such file or directory # rm -rf dir2 rm: Unable to remove directory dir2: Directory not empty Take a look: ------- cut

ZFS with Equallogic storage
I''m planning on setting up an NFS server for our ESXi hosts and plan on using a virtualized Solaris or Nexenta host to serve ZFS over NFS. The storage I have available is provided by Equallogic boxes over 10Gbe iSCSI. I am trying to figure out the best way to provide both performance and resiliency given the Equallogic provides the redundancy. Since I am hoping to provide a 2TB

Oracle database on zfs
Hi, I am wondering if there is a guideline on how to configure ZFS on a server with Oracle database? We are experiencing some slowness on writes to ZFS filesystem. It take about 530ms to write a 2k data. We are running Solaris 10 u5 127127-11 and the back-end storage is a RAID5 EMC EMX. This is a small database with about 18gb storage allocated. Is there a tunable parameters that we can apply to

When writing to SLOG at full speed all disk IO is blocked
Hello all... I''m seeing this behaviour in an old build (89), and i just want to hear from you if there is some known bug about it. I''m aware of the "picket fencing" problem, and that ZFS is not choosing right if write to slog is better or not (thinking if we have a better throughput from disks). But i did not find anything about 100% slog activity (~115MB/s) blocks

NFS Block Monitor
Hello all.. I did some tests to understand the behaviour of ZFS and slog (SSD), and for understand the workload i did implement a simple software to visualize the data blocks (read/write). I''m posting here the link in the case somebody wants to try it. http://www.eall.com.br/blog/?p=906 Thanks a lot for your time. Leal [http://www.eall.com.br/blog] -- This message posted from

rsync efficiency
Hello all, I have a doubt that i think you hackers of rsync has the answer. ;-) I have make this post on my blog: http://www.posix.brte.com.br/blog/?p=312 to start a serie about the copy-on-write semantics of ZFS. In my test "VI" did rewrite the whole file just for change 3 bytes, so the whole file was reallocated. What i want to know from you is about the techniques used by rsync

Configuring a 3510 for ZFS
Hi folks, Myself and a colleague are currently involved in a prototyping exercise to evaluate ZFS against our current filesystem. We are looking at the best way to arrange the disks in a 3510 storage array. We have been testing with the 12 disks on the 3510 exported as "nraid" logical devices. We then configured a single ZFS pool on top of this, using two raid-z arrays. We are getting

Slow reads with ZFS+NFS
Heya all, I''m working on testing ZFS with NFS, and I could use some guidance - read speeds are a bit less than I expected. Over a gig-e line, we''re seeing ~30 MB/s reads on average - doesn''t seem to matter if we''re doing large numbers of small files or small numbers of large files, the speed seems to top out there. We''ve disabled pre-fetching, which

ZFS and VXVM/VXFS
We are looking at the alternatives to VXVM/VXFS. One of the feature which we liked in Veritas, apart from the obvious ones is the ability to call the disks by name and group them in to a disk group. Especially in SAN based environment where the disks may be shared by multiple machines, it is very easy to manage them by disk group names rather than cxtxdx numbers. Does zfs offer such

ZFS core contributor nominations
The time has come to review the current Contributor and Core contributor grants for ZFS. Since all of the ZFS core contributors grants are set to expire on 02-24-2009 we need to renew the members that are still contributing at core contributor levels. We should also add some new members to both Contributor and Core contributor levels. First the current list of Core contributors: Bill

ZFS send / recv to a lower ZFS version
Hi, We are using multiple opensolaris 06/09 and solaris 10 servers. Currently we are ''dumping'' (incremental)backups to a backup server. I wonder if anybody knows what happens when I send/recv a zfs volume from version 15 to a (backup) system with version 14. I''ve the feeling it''s not very wise to do, but is it doable and what kind of caveats can be

Any news on ZFS bug 6535172?
We''re running a Cyrus IMAP server on a T2000 under Solaris 10 with about 1 TB of mailboxes on ZFS filesystems. Recently, when under load, we''ve had incidents where IMAP operations became very slow. The general symptoms are that the number of imapd, pop3d, and lmtpd processes increases, the CPU load average increases, but the ZFS I/O bandwidth decreases. At the same time, ZFS

Alternatives to programmatically calling the rsync binary a lot
Dear list, I'd like to have your expertise opinion on following issue. Out of a concrete need we developed an application that will rsync any changes on a local directory structure to a remove system the moment they happen using the linux kernel watch feature. This is in our opinion much more elegant compared to invoking rsync every x seconds/minutes from cron, or having to use a special

a single nfs file system shared out twice with different permissions
I am trying to configure a system where I have two different NFS shares which point to the same directory. The idea is if you come in via one path, you will have read-only access and can''t delete any files, if you come in the 2nd path, then you will have read/write access. For example, create the read/write nfs share: zfs create tank/snapshots zfs set sharenfs=on tank/snapshots root
