SaMBa 4.16.4 adds users to ACLs as groups
Dear All,
Thank you for your help (especially Rowland Penny), I finally managed to
migrate our ancient ext3 based, ISO-8859-2 encoded SaMBa 3.2.5 with locally
stored UIDs and GIDs to a UTF-8 encoded ex4 based server running SaMBa
4.16.4 with RID UID/GID backend.
However, after two weeks of the migration I observed something horrible:
Windows Word (or MS Office in general) somehow manages to

from over the weekend on slashdot that almalinux stable is released.

I disagree with you. Both Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux are in a very
comfortable position, and they will likely stay that way.
my predict is that they will continue as a #rebuilder / #freeloader,
writing software is a hard work.

Samba AD Authentication Issues After Update
Thank you.
While I'm currently in the process of migrating to AlmaLinux 8 via an
in-place upgrade, I initially wanted to update the base packages on CentOS
7 before proceeding. However, given the circumstances, it seems deploying a
separate AlmaLinux machine for testing might be the most efficient approach
to troubleshooting the issue.
If the problem persists on a fresh AlmaLinux

Current RHEL fragmentation landscape
Hi,
I've quickly made an incomplete list of the RHEL and clones/forks
landscape to see what the current situation is. The interesting question
will be how this will change in the coming years and how it affects Red
Hat/IBM and the Linux users in general.
RHEL ("The Original", quasi Gold standard until June 2023)
CentOS Stream (rolling RHEL next)
Oracle Linux (almost 1:1 rebuild

Failed to convert SID to a UID
It works for us with Rocky Linux 8.8 and Samba 4.17.5. DCs are Samba 4.18.2.
Looking at your conf I see this:
I do _not_ have this:
idmap config DOMAIN:unix_primary_group = yes
I have and you don't:
disable netbios = yes
smb ports = 445
server min protocol = SMB2
client min protocol = SMB2
Different:
kerberos method = secrets and keytab
And this is deprecated:
winbind nss info =

Looking. Rocky was supposed to release something at the beginning of the

I'm trying to write a single email answering all the question of your

Well, not exactly :-) Only 5 months and 5 days :-) However, this specific
thread is only 9 days old. I had a few mails in january, february,

Hello;
We were able to set up shared folders in a cluster (using dovecot as
proxy on dedicated front-end servers, without using director) by
following
https://doc.dovecot.org/configuration_manual/shared_mailboxes/cluster_setup/.
Here is our related conf on imap farms (dovecot v2.3.16 on Almalinux):

AD Functional Level vs very old SaMBa member server
Will I really HAVE to use the idmap backends AD or RID? I was planning to
use TDB2 with a script which I've already written:

SID:S-1-5-21-1632654815-303659134-1628659390-1950
[root at fs3 samba]# ./idmap.sh IDTOSID GID 198

can I preserve UIDs/GIDs when transferring with rsync?
I noticed that rsync can preserve most of the file's characteristics
when it is used with "-a" option (it includes -o and -g flags for
preserving owners and groups).
However, when I transfer data between systems, it affects my UIDs/GIDs,
making the data hard to recover.
Example:
Sending side:
/etc/passwd:
mark:x:503:503::/home/mark:/bin/bash
file:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 mark mark

In your last post there was this:
