Migrating from packages to source
I thought I'd put this together for those who might find it useful : The scenario : Running version of samba less than the current version that was provided by the distribution. Want to play with new features or just upgrade a running system. The solution : Download the source CD for your distribution. - A big download I know - but you could buy it from cheeplinux/cheepbytes etc

Re: CentOS 3.4 Single CD "Server" version
Hey, Lance mentioned yum group install. This yum group capability makes the "server" CD's more versatile than the name implies -- you only need a broadband connection to get any kind of CentOS install you want. Start with a minimal install off the CD, and then use the yum group install to conveniently get the same install you could get off the 3 CD set (only more up to date).

How did you do that? I think I'm absolutely stupid as I don't understand how to use wine..it seems to me absolutely difficult.

new mysql installation, kinda stuck
I installed centos 6 as a webserver. It installed mysql. However, I guess I need mysql-server for me to use it for php and my website. I installed that. I am unable to give root a password and can go no further. I have tried mysql-secure-installation and I just get stuck at errors and no progression. I have tried mysqladmin -u root password <password> and the accompanying one that

[LLVMdev] Kinda noob questions
Thank you John and John :P these optimizations (mem2reg and the "few additional" ones) I have to enable then or something like this?? (I compile the .ll to .o with the sequence llvm-as, llc, as) Yet about dynamic stack allocation, what is (generally) better? to pre alloc everything at start, or let it be? Imagine this pseudo-code while (x) { int b = 0; ... } using alloca where b

OT (kinda): Justification for adding Asterisk to the business plan
Greetings all, I'm trying to build a justification case to get the firm I work for to start working with Asterisk more. How could I build this case? The argument I'm raising is that people need phones. PBX systems are too expensive for fewer options and less expansion capabilities. Leveraging Asterisk in the business plan would allow for more consulting revenue and resale

OT (kinda): Justification for adding Asteris kto the business plan
>The old "lock-in" model of the telecom world was nasty and monopolistic and >expensive, but by jove it just worked. >Because as you've seen from this list ANYTHING and EVERYTHING can, and >does, go wrong with this technology. Yes, true, but this is the nature of the beast. It (Asterisk) is an infinitely configurable platform that runs on anything. This essentially

Performance problems? (kinda long)
Hello all! First, let me apologize if this is painfully obvious; I searched the list archives a few times and poked around the 'net, to no avail... I'm having a wee problem with Samba's performance (speed) on a Linux 2.1.132 server. Specifically, the server is working at about half the speed of an NT machine. The Samba server (running Redhat 5.2 w/ kernel 2.1.132) is considerably

dracut-initqueue timeout with virt-install... but it works (kinda?)
Hello, I?m using virt-install to build a guest system with CentOS. The system boots up, times out with dracut-initqueue timeout and drops me into an emergency shell. If I exit the shell the install continues and I get a working machine. Any ideas? virt-install \ -n TEST \ -r 8192 \ --os-type=linux \ --disk=/vm-images/test.img,device=disk,bus=virtio,size=100,format=raw \
