Mongrel + Lighttpd
Hi guys,
I''ve been chasing a problem in my web-stack: Lighttpd -> Mongrel ->
Rails, and found a problem with the interaction of Lighttpd and Mongrel.
If a request takes more than 5 seconds, Lighty will retry it - and
then the requests / responses get mixed up in Lighty and it returns a
bad response to the client. Not good.
I''m convinced that the problem is

[ Rails ] Multiple rails apps on 1 host
Team,
I''m trying to figure out how to run 2 rails apps on one host.
I ran an experiment:
cd /tmp/
rails app1
rails app2
cd app1
script/server
rails put a copy of lighttpd.conf in
/tmp/app1/config/
and then started lighttpd
http://localhost:3000
gave me the splash page.
I shutdown the server
I added something to
/tmp/app1/config/lighttpd.conf
server.modules = (

Can someone please explain Lighttpd + Mongrel + Rails.
I know that Mongrel is a web server that hosts rails applications. But
i don''t understand what part Lighttpd (or Apache) has in the setup. I
know that you can use Mongrel on its own. What does Lighttpd improve
on?
Thanks,
Chris

my apache 2.2 conf
I just finished updating our internal site, which hosts multiple Rails
apps, to Apache 2.2.3. It also has a TWiki rewritten into the root,
ViewVC mounted on /cvs, and /server-status and /server-info.

ServerAlias int
CustomLog /var/www/logs/int.example.com/access.log combined

Multiple Rails app on the same server?
I have a rails app on a debian server running lighttpd and I''m trying to
set up typo so that it also works (with a different url). I have 4 URLs
running -- let''s call them foo.com, bar.com, www.typo.com and
php.typo.com
I am starting lighttpd by going into the directory where my foo.com app
is and typing either ruby script/server or script/server -e production

Mongrel in Production ?
Hi Everyone,
I was setting up Lighty+Fcgi on our server for last *couple* ( read
zillion ) of hours. I had posted my problems in my previous email. But
all in vain..
So, for time being, I switched to Mongrel. And the performance seemed
quite good. This is the first time ever I''m using mongrel ( Awesome
stuff ZedShaw..Thanks! ). I''m wondering if there are many people

recommended setup of Mongrel_cluster + SSL for multiple apps?
I''d like to use Mongrel_cluster with SSL on a green-field application (it
can be configured however is best - initially, "ease of setup" is important,
but then soon after will be scaling and response time). I''ve read a lot of
emails on this topic, and checked out the Mongrel pages, etc, but I''m left
with this question of what is recommended:

RoR and Growing Pains
I have persuaded my company to move towards an RoR shop... from a PHP 5
(with in-house-built framework)... so the jump is not terribly bad. I''m
REALLY excited actually!
My problem: I am overwhelmed with all the setup Loops I have to jump
through to get RoR setup. I tried it on my current Apache 1.34 and
decided it''d be easier to make the Lighty (1.4.11) jump. So I did. I get

Multiple rails apps with Mongrel
I''m trying to set up several different Rails apps on the same domain, each
one running Mongrel. After reading all of the documentation, it''s fairly
clear how to use subdomains - create several Apache virtual hosts, each of
which has a different ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse command to redirect
from different ports (ie, 3000, 3100), and then have each Mongrel instance

Lighttpd Conf Help - Multiple Domains Multiple Apps
Hi Guys,
I hope someone can help me out. I am trying to configure two
applications to run on lighttpd and each app will have its own domain.
My machine is running on Fedora. When I run my lighttpd with the
following conf file, I get no error but when I check out my app, it
dishes out a 404 error- the 404 being served isn''t the 404 inside the
railsapp/public folder.
Do hope someone

trying to add another app
hey all,
I have an app working great with apache2 and mongrel_cluster.
However, I''m trying to run another application and now when I go to
app1.comit falls to
app2.com and the opposite. That''s probably because I messed up somewhere
with the cluster.
this is the content of my conf.d/app1.proxy_cluster.conf:
<Proxy balancer://mongrel_cluster>

Mongrel Now Recommended Setup?
I see that the RubyOnRails.com site has migrated to Mongrel with Apache as a
front-end proxy.
Is that now the/a recommended setup for Rails apps? We''re still using FCGI
but I''m always interested to learn more about other folk''s successful
deployment choices.
Across all of our sites we''re pumping out about 300k pages per day so

Rails *that* slow?
I''m working on my first little rails-application. It''s a rewrite of a
gallery-script i once made (in PHP): http://notdotnet.net
However - my rails-version is waaay to slow :(
http://r.notdotnet.net/
I don''t do any heavy image-processing, I don''t have any
killer-algorithms with a time complexity on O(n^n), and I don''t use any
major hacks.

which webserver to use in production?
Apologies in advance if this ignites a war of comflicting opinions....
I''m a few days away from going live with my first RoR application. It
is completely database centric and each user will have his own queries
so cacheing will not really help.
I have a dedicated linux server being built by my hosting provider and I
need to tell them which webserver to use. The databse is MySQL

Multiple apps on the same server, all should be able to survive slashdotting
Dear all,
I am researching solutions for "how do you squeeze as many Rails apps as you
can on a cluster" problem.
Environment constraints are as follows:
* 4 commodity web servers (2 CPUs, 8 Gb of RAM each)
* shared file storage and database (big, fast, not a bottleneck)
* multiple Rails apps running on it
* normally, the load is insignificant, but from time to time any of these
apps

Lighty + Mongrel?
On httpd I use ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse to forward requests to
webrick and mongrel. How can I do this same thing using Lighty and
Mongrel?
Thanks,
Joe
