Using CentOS repos in a RHEL machine
Hi I have 2 machines with RHEL 5.2 and I would like to use CentOS repos. I would like to know if the document "Using CentOS Repositories on RHEL Machines"[1] can be used in CentOS 5.2 without too much modifications. Thanks Marcelo [1] http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/PackageManagement/YumOnRHEL

Yum question - RHEL4
Hi this is technically a RHEL4 question but i hope it can be answered here... Does RHEL4 do yum OK ? I kix a lot of boxes and it would be great to run the update after the build automajically rather than running through the up2date registration and using that method. I would also rather not pay lots for satellite server. If i setup my own RHEL repo can i use yum against this? Or any other

RHEL4 - which yum version?
I'm looking at this document to convert RHEL4 systems to Yum and setup an updates repository. http://sial.org/howto/yum/ Which version of yum would you recommend for that? What would be the dependencies that need to be installed? Any guidelines for installing Yum on RHEL4 without breaking the RPM dependencies and stuff (and with minimal changes to the system)? The document recommends

Kickstart, package always selected
I'm trying to kickstart a Centos 4.1 system with the minimum set of packages. I have no use for ypbind so I'm trying to prevent from being installed, but kickstart/anaconda always insist on its installation (complaining that the package is missing). This is the %packages section of my ks file so far: %packages #-@ dialup kernel grub e2fsprogs lvm2 -slocate -bluez-utils -bluez-bluefw

Building rpms
I have been asked to update OpenLDAP to the latest stable version. I am using CentOS 4.2 and have OpenLDAP 2.2.13 installed. I can install from source if I have to, but I would rather stay with rpm packages if possible. I found an rpm from Fedora Core Development on RPMFIND. Will this one work with Centos, or should I grab the source rpm and rebuild it? Bowie

Using yum variable $releasever reports 1
Hi, I have an old server that originally was a RedHat 8 server. Then I upgraded to RedHat 9, then Tao Linux 1 and last to CentOS 3 when tao was discontinued. Yes I know that this was probably not the smartest thing in the world but now this is the case and I don't want to reinstall it. Now the question. In yum.conf I have distroverpkg=redhat-release and cat /etc/redhat-release gives: CentOS

yum groupinstall "MySQL Database"
Hi all, I have a question related to yum groupinstall. I just tried a: yum groupinstall "MySQL Database" I expected that I would end up with a MySQL Database server, but it installed a bunch of .rpms *except* mysql-server. No big deal, I'm just curious if it was intended this way or not, that's all. Thank you and, Have a nice evening everyone, Alex

yum/x86_64
Starting from the 4.2 Server install on x86_64 I did a "yum update", then "yum install openssl openssl-utils" and it appears to have installed an assortment of i386 programs and libs. How do I get rid of the wrong ones? Specifically, what I want is the right stuff to run the beta VMware server. It looks like it needs some X libs and yum wants to install i386 versions of

im very new to RH, and even more so to YUM, but i need to install it on a RHEL 7.2 server, which i have done but installing the RPM package, and updated it via the Centos2 archives. The program i am trying to install is bacula, a backup/tape program on one of our old servers, we need to upgrade to a newer version. I didnt want to deal with the deps, so i thought yum was the way to go. well, it

long pages
hi guys, some of the pages on the wiki are getting quite large ( eg. http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BuildingKernelModules ), and its not easy to work out what all might be included in the page, without actually going through most of it ( were going to loose context in this case ) What would be a better option ? to split the pages up into more manageable chunks or to just create an index on

System on time
Hi, To get my system on time, I usually issue these two commands: # ntpdate de.pool.ntp.org # hwclock -w And when I want this to be done on startup, I put the two lines in rc.local. I wonder if this is an orthodox way to do things. Or is there something more appropriate? Niki Kovacs

yum $releasever thinks it's 1 instead of 3
I just upgraded one of my Tao boxes to Centos 3. The usual procedure is to do a yum update twice, and all is fine. This time, I had to rebuilddb before I could run the second yum update, and once I started this, yum fails. It says that $releasever is "1.0". Now I realize I could manually edit my yum.conf and make it go to 3, but this may not fix the problem down the road. Can

Thanks for all the help and advice
I went with CentOS today and I couldn't be happier. I'm definitely excited to be part of this community. Now I just have to remember (after years of using the default SuSE install of Java/Ant/Tomcat/Eclipse, etc.) where the best place to put my Java apps is. Preston

Yum + priorities plugin question
Hello all! I've recently started using the priorities plugin as part of my best practices. It's very effective, and prevents nasty things from happening (like atrpms upgrading python and disabling yum.) I'm wondering if there's a simple and elegant way to allow package-name-based exclusions. For example: For my mysql cluster, I'd prefer to have the latest mysql and
