Samba config for Windows on VMWare
I know this is a little off topic (not as usual, dammit!), but I figure
at least one of y'all can handle this one.
I have tried to configure my CentOS4.4 Plus desktop for samba sharing
with the VMWare Windows that runs on it. However, no matter what I've
done so far, I can't get the Windows to recognize this machine as a
legitimate network destination.
Here's my samba

Problems with building a complete kernel
I have a plain vanilla Centos source (not 100% sure where we got it
from), but I can't seem to get a build that installs correctly.
I tried the method described at
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel, but rpm doesn't like the
output file, and even if I install it with -F, nothing seems to happen -
no new kernel, now initrd, nothing.
When I tried following the directions in the

Automounter (?) failing in CentOS 5.3
I may have asked about this before, but I can't find any records of so
doing in my saved mail (which includes almost everything I ever read
or write):
All of a sudden, I am not getting flash drives automatically mounted
in CentOS 5.3 with GNOME - they are recognized by the hardware, but
there seems to be a (new?) problem with the maps. Here's the tail end
of dmesg:

What's the best way to convert a whole set of file systems?
I am currently running a Windows XP system at home with around 100+ Mb
in use over ~400Mb of NTFS file systems. I am installing CentOS 4.4 on
it when I change out the mobo/cpu/mem/video combo I just bought. I want
to convert all the file systems to (probably) Reiserfs or maybe ext3,
but I need to do them one at a time because I only have enough transfer
space to accommodate the largest one, or

SanDisk Flash Drive error
Hi all- I'm trying to use a SanDisk Cruzer Micro flash drive (usb,
512MB). It has CruzerLock version 2.0 Security software in it. When
I plug it in, it is recognized OK. When I open the drive, I have a
file to open: CruzerLock2.exe. It has the Wine icon. But when I
click on it, I get:
CLZ1020: cannot locate the application in it's required location:

Syslinux of a USB flash ram
Folks,
When I run syslinux on my Sandisk Cruzer (512MB) USB flash RAM with the "syslinux /dev/sda" , it corrupts the partition table that I had already created on my USB device. It attempts to boot but eventually fails trying to load the kernel. If I try "syslinux /dev/sda1", the USB device fail to boot at all. I would think that /dev/sda would be the correct device to use if

Looking for a good disk exerciser
I recently added a Seagate 400Gb SATA drive to my system, and it has been
behaving strangely since I put it in. for one thing, the BIOS S.M.A.R.T.
came up with a warning the last time I booted with it enabled, saying that I
should backup my data and replace the disk (!).
I still have not made any irreversible data transfers to this drive, and I
have some time yet to take it back, but I'd

Errors in display settings
This is what nvidia-settings gave me on the terminal window before it
brought up its own (useless) window - anyone know what this means (or is
it all related back to the other thread I posted on screensaver
problems)?

How to build a debug kernel
I need to build a kernel with full debugging enabled - breakpoints, etc.
I know there's a relatively simple way to do this with rpms, but I don't
know what it is....
Help?
Thanks.

Boot 32GB Multi-partition Flash as USB-ZIP
I have a Pentium 4 machine that does not boot from my 32GB SanDisk
Cruzer. Its first partition is 24GB and FAT32, to serve as
cross-platform storage. There is a second partition of 7GB in EXT2
which is bootable and contains a Linux system armed with syslinux
(extlinux). This works fine booting off of recent laptops and desktops
alike.
This particular desktop has in its BIOS everything related to

Stumped: kernel 2.6.18-8 source doesn't build???
I installed the kernel-2.6.18-8.el5.src.rpm today and went to build
it, but it fails with this error:
$ rpmbuild -bp --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec
Building target platforms: x86_64
Building for target x86_64
error: Failed build dependencies:
unifdef is needed by kernel-2.6.18-8.el5.x86_64
I double checked and this appears to be the latest kernel source rpm
on centos/5.0/os/SRPMS.

stupid cruzer tricks ???
Greets,
Ummmmm never had one b4... picked up a new 4 Gig SanDisk Cruzer Micro USB
2.0 Flash Drive to play with.
Dunno if I will keep it or not.
I am mostly interested in using it with CentOS of course.
Ummmmm it comes with like 120 meg of non linux apps and stuff on it.
Can I dust that garbage and just reformat this unit to boot with CentOS or??
Been around for a long time, know google

OT: AMD CPU actual speed....
I know this is a bit OT, but the subject of CPU speed came up here and I was
(and have been for some time) curious:
What is the actual speed of an AMD CPU? E.g., I have a Athlon 64 X2 "4200+"
but my /proc/cpuinfo shows 1005.164 MHz for the two cores.
What do those mean? Is there a reference for this (huge) discrepancy?
Also, is there a way (and what) to tell what the actuall running

Good things about CentOS 5; problem with flash in seamonkey
I'd like to point out that overall I am quite pleased with CentOS 5,
although I am having more fun with it than I did with 4.4 and I knew
less about CentOS then (duh).
Most things seem to work fine, including a relatively smooth
installation from the DVD image I downloaded, although the number of
screensavers I can see (and this could be related to the ATI/dual head
problem) is pathetically

Moving/copying the MBR
Are there any tools for working with and moving or copying the MBR?
My machine has 2 PATA drives (hda & hdb) and 2 SATA drives (sda & sdb). The
MBR is on hda, but I would like (eventually or sooner) to boot from sda
because it is two years newer, faster and, hopefully, more reliable. Even
if I don't change that, I'd like a backup MBR on sda in case hda fails (hdb
has gone sour a

Missing samba binaries
I went to enable samba on my home machine, which has a largely plain vanilla
install of CentOS 4.4 Plus, and the smbd and nmbd files are missing. As you
may know, this makes it rather difficult to run samba. For some reason, the
winbindd binary is present, and rpm reports:
samba-common-3.0.10-1.4E.11
samba-client-3.0.10-1.4E.11
as present. So how do I retrieve the missing samba binaries/ Do

CentOS 5 and the nvidia driver
Has anyone with an nvidia video card had issues with CentOS 5 so far?
I've been holding off on installing 5 at home because of the trouble
I've been having with my video here at work, but here I have that
lovely ATI card and there I have a geFORCE 7100gs and am, so far,
successfully using the nvidia driver with CentOS 4.4 without
significant problems.
Just wondering....
