shaping passive ftp traffic
Hi,
I have tried unsuccesfully to limit my ftp server send speed in linux.
I have an ipcop linux firewall/router with 2 nics. 1 nic (eth1) is
connected to a 3mbit/384Kbit cable connection and the other (eth0) a
switch. Behind it i have a suse linux box and a windows box.
On the suse box i run proftpd. I need to shape my passive ftp send
speed to 34KBytes because if it is maxed out at 45K

[Bridge] Bridge / Transparent Proxy
Hi,
I am using my machine as a Bridge and running transparent proxy on it.
My question is - where the brdige will work?
Do brdige will forward the packet before it reaches to iptables rule?
If yes then what is the solution - as I want to use my machine as
Transparent proxy and I have setup iptables rules on it.
I have tried so many times - look at the tcpdump also - but it seems
that packets

Mongrel Service won''t start on windows
64bit Intel 8 CPU server
Windows 2003 Server
Service set to run as LocalSystem, doesn''t work as user account either
The error we see is:
"Service failed to start in a timely..."
Which I have seen in the past email trails as working
The app works from mongrel_rails start and from mongrel_service console -N

shorewall restart failure recovery option?
Hi,
I was thinking about changing the #shorewall restart command a little bit.
Would it be a good idea to make this command restore the previous running
configuration in case of a start-failure? (kind of like the "try-command")
1. Save the currently running iptables configuration to a /tmp file.
(with iptables-save for example)
2. Run the new configuration. (the one in /etc/shorewall)

recode vector values to NA
Greetings,
I'm in the painful process of migrating from SAS to R. In the process I've
discovered that there are some basic things that I am getting hung up on. The
most basic is the simple recoding of variables. Suppose I create a vector
x <- rnorm(10000)
and I want to recode all values of x > 1.5 to NA. How would I do that in R?
TIA
Cheers,

How to get transparent colors to sum to complete opacity?
Dear List,
I want to use transparency in R to represent downweighting of
observations based on clusters (repeated observations in a dataset).
Some clusters will have identical covariate values in a parameter space
-- in the 2D x,y case, these represent a bunch of semi-tranparent dots
in the same place. I'd like these overlapping dots to be completely
opaque. In other cases, the

sorting data frame
Greetings,
I hope this isn't obvious but I've read through the FAQ and the various
other R/S books I have and I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how
to sort a data frame by a specific variable. Suppose I have a four
variable data.frame x and the variables are var1, var2, var3, var4. I
want to sort on say var3 simply for display purposes. How can this be
accomplished? Thanks

Measures of central tendency - mode
Greetings,
This seems too rudimentary to ask but for the life of me I cannot locate a readily easy method to compute the univariate mode. I know "mode" is not correct and "table" provides a reasonable count but I figured there would be an easy way to extract the value from the table after I do something like:
max(table(mydadat$myvar))
unfortunately it only returns the max

mongrel service security needs on Win2k3
Hello all,
I have mongrel service 0.3.2 running on Win2003 64-bit, special thanks to
Luis for getting that running. You are a great asset!
I am trying to figure out exactly what rights are needed by the account that
is running the service. It works if I give it a domain account with local
admin privileges, but it doesn''t work if I give it a domain account without
local admin. I was

reading in data contingent upon a character at col 1
Greetings,
I have a text file that is output from a statistics package that I would like
to read into R. Since I have several hundred of these output files I would
prefer not to edit them manually. The problem is that it has a ";" (without
the quotes) as the first character for some lines - lines that I do not
necessarily want to read in. Use of tr, sed, awk or any other unix

503 Errors While Cluster Is Still Active
I''ve setup a new mongrel cluster on my VPS, and am noticing a lot if
503 errors if I try to hit the server too many times in succession in
a few seconds. I''ve read that this is usually caused by the cluster
crashing, but I haven''t been seen the cluster crash when I do this.
Does anyone have any other ideas what might cause this? I have my
server configured how

yum stalls <?>
I just installed a fresh 3.3 system (because those are the ISO's I had on
hand). Upon running yum update, it starts to download headers and then
stalls. I hit Ctl-C and it continues to download about 4-5 more headers and
stalls. I hit Ctl-C again and it pulls a few more headers. Anyone seen
this and/or know how to fix it?
TIA

How to test if two C statistics are significantly different?
Hey all,
In order to test if a marker is a risk factor, I built two models (using cox
proportional hazard model). One model included this marker, and the other is
not.
Then, I use R package risksetROC to test how much predictive value did the
marker add to this model. I get two C statistics by analyzing the linear
predictors of the two models into this package.
The qustion is How to test if two
