Self-locking files...
Hi, I've set up a samba server (2.2.7) on a Mandrake 9 (2.4.16xxx on X86); everything works fine, except a little recurring problem: *very* often, clients are forbidden to save the document(s) they've open ("locked file"); it's enough to modify one char of the filename and the save goes fine, of course with another name... I verified the problem, and also verified that

Passive OS fingerprinting and conditional firewalling
Hi all, there''s an interesting citaton on kerneltrap.org, mentioning the addition of passive OS fingerprinting to the OpenBSD firewall (http://www.kerneltrap.org/node/view/770 for those interested) This new feature enables the possibility of triggering customized firewall rules according to the (detected) incoming OS, in a fully passive way. I was wondering if the above would be

NIC traffic monitoring, recording and reporting software?
I have a remote CentOS-5.3 installation that shares traffic with another enterprise. I want to record and measure the actual network traffic that comes into and goes out of that host's net i/f on a monthly basis for billing verification purposes. Does CentOS have a software package to accomplish this? I have run across references to a package called vnstat as a possible answer to my

Samba Performance for Digital Recording
Hello, We are doing digital recording over a 100 Mb/s switched network to a dedicated Samba NAS-Filer and need to optimize our workflow and present some performance data. I just want to be sure, to not overlook some important aspect in my experimental setup. Let me explain in short what is our infrastructure: The Swiss Library for the Blind has started producing Digital Talking Books (see

Winbind group membership not updating
We are currently in the process of replacing some of our file servers with Active Directory joined Samba servers. However, during testing we have noticed behaviour that has caught us off guard. Changes in user group membership in AD do not show up on our file servers. Specifically, changing a user's groups in AD won't affect group membership on the Samba server once the user has

Mixed Logit model mlogit error
I am new to R but I have managed to use mlogit to run multivariate logit models successfully. My data violates the Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives assumption and now I would like to run a mixed logit model. It is a "wide" data set with 9 independent (individual) variables and three choices (variable Y). The database is in a cvs file called CAU. This is the code I have run

Summer student internship placement at University of York / YCCSA / SEI (paid)
Dear R-lings, I did not know which list to post to, because it is a studentship so not really a job, so it did not fit the r-sig-jobs list .... and it is about devloping an extension package interfaced with R .... I hope I did not upset anyone. If so apologies. The Centre For Complex systems Analysis at the University of York (YCCSA) in UK in collaboration with Stockholm Environment

Error "singular gradient matrix at initial parameter estimates" in nls
I am using nls to fit a non linear function to some data. The non linear function is: y= 1- exp(-(k0+k1*p1+ .... + kn*pn)) I have chosen algorithm "port", with lower boundary is 0 for all of the ki parameters, and I have tried many start values for the parameters ki (including generating them at random). If I fit the non linear function to the same data using an external

[LLVMdev] LLVM C bindings
Hi, I find the C bindings for LLVM very useful, since they allow to invoke LLVM from a wider set of software tools (i.e. llvm-py uses it to export llvm to python). Unfortunately, it seems that llvm-c interface lacks major functionalities, e.g. getting a pointer to a jit-ted function. It is easy to write a small c++ wrapper to expose the functionality that one wants (llvm-py does it for the many

A point in a vector?
Dear list, I have a strange requirement .... I have a vector, for example v<- c(0,0,0,0,1,2,4,6,8,8,8,8). I have a value, for example x<- 4.8. I would like to understand in which sub interval of v is x. In this case, v would be in the sub interval [4,6] that is in the subinterval starting from element j=7 to the element j+1=8. Can we do that with an R command? Regards -- Corrado Topi
