What is wrong with yum?
Hello, in my CentOS-Base.repo file there is a line baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/$releasever/updates/$basearch and yum update said 'nothing to do'. Then I change this line to baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5.1/updates/i386 and yum updates firefox, squid, sos and so on. That happens on two of my computers, reproducible. Does yum sometimes forget it's release

Clock Drifts Off
I installed CentOS 4.4 32 bit on a dual core AMD64 motherboad. Its a Tyan Tomcat K8E motherboard with socket 939. The clock keeps drifting off like 5+ minutes an hour. Run ntpupdate hourly to compensate. Any ideas why or how to fix? Matt

Can anyone explain how the disk elevator works and if there is anyway to tweak it? I have an email server which likely has a large number of read and write requests and was wandering if there was anyway to improve performance. Matt

AW: Problems with installation
ok - I tried this too. But CentOS tries to find the floppy as /dev/hda which is not the device for the USB-Floppy. Dell ships one with the server because no one is integrated. So when I try to include the driver disk the installer is not able to find it. -----Urspr?ngliche Nachricht----- Von: centos-bounces at centos.org [mailto:centos-bounces at centos.org] Im Auftrag von Jim Perrin Gesendet:

BIOS upgrade side effects
Are there any possible undesirable effects of a BIOS upgrade? The worst I can think of is something that would change my SATA drives from being mapped as SCSI to being mapped as IDE. Ted Miller Indiana

PHP question on CentOS
I'm installing NagiosQL, and it's not displaying the http://mybox.com/nagiosql/index.php page, so I suspect that PHP isn't working correctly. Kickstart install surprise
I have to say that I was more that a bit surprised, if not to say dismayed when I booted a system with CentOS 5 installed to test a kickstart CD in interactive mode, took it to the custom partitioning screen, then rebooted without saving anything only to come up with a grub prompt, and the disk's partition table wiped. The ks.cfg file did say to wipe the disk when installing, but I would

Any compelling reasons to upgrade to 5
Just popped back on the list because I was curious about this. I've read the information about virtualization and other new features. I'm just wondering (as someone who installed CentOS 2 years ago and basically hasn't thought much about it my OS other than using it since then) if any piece of it except for virtualization got updated significantly enough to consider an upgrade. My

Slackware's 'explodepkg' equivalent for rpm?
Hi, Is there any 'explodepkg' equivalent for the rpm command? What I want is simply uncompress an RPM package to get the files directly, but I didn't find anything in rpm's manpage. Cheers, Niki Kovacs

TCP connection forwarding troubles
For some time I have routinely websurfed across a forwarded TCP connection using SSH. The other end of the TCP tunnel connects to a Squid proxy cache on the same machine. This usually works. But I see lots of error messages on each end of the form Jun 13 13:22:02 tunnel sshd[32378]: error: channel 0: chan_shutdown_read: shutdown() failed for fd5 [i1 o128]: Transport endpoint is not connected

RNDC errors using SAMBA_INTERNAL_DNS
Hi all, I've set up a simple domain using Samba 4.4.2 from source under Ubuntu 16.04. I accepted the usual defaults and basically followed wiki.samba.org to the letter. The main thing is I'm using Samba's internal DNS and not Bind (Bind is not even installed on the system). In the log.samba file on the first DC I kept getting this: [2016/04/28 17:01:02.716292, 0]

Centos 5 where is rndc.conf and named.conf?
In /var/named/chroot/etc there is no rndc.conf or named.conf. Where are they? Webmin built a named.conf, but it is missing many of the 'default' entries. And it did not set up the symbolic link to /etc I am trying to follow instructions at: http://www.wains.be/index.php/2007/02/04/centos-chroot-dns-with-bind/

rndc: connect failed: 127.0.0.1#953: connection refused
My BIND9.6.0 on FreeBSD 6.2 works fine when I manually start with: root@ns2# named -4 -S 1024 -c /etc/namedb/named.conf But it won't start on boot and no error messages or log. And it won't start using rndc, it cause error message. Why does the error shows port 953 when I specified for port 53 in the config? rndc: connect failed: 127.0.0.1#953: connection refused Below are

bind-chroot rpm only builds chroot tree?
I just downloaded the bind-chroot rpm and looked into it with Archive manager (so I am lazy), and no files, just the chroot tree. I am assuming there is some script that Archive manager does not show, or I am just missing it, because the ROOTDIR= did get added to /etc/sysconfig/named (and the one in the bind rpm is without this line). Just interesting that if you chroot, you are expected to

rndc start fails with "rndc: connect failed: connection refused"
CentOS 4.8, BIND 9.2.4 Hi All: I have a rather annoying problem with rndc which I have not been able to resolve despite much searching and many attempts to correct. When making changes to our DNS entries I have tried to use the following procedures: 1. Flush the cache buffers: rndc flush 2. Stop named: rndc stop 3. Delete the journal files: rm *.jnl 4. Edit the forward and/or
