Re: Disk partitions and LVM limits - SUMMARY
Thank you all for the help.
I'm writing this summary message because of people requests. I haven't tried
all of this. I just collected it and organized it.
You've got a big storage. Now what?
The short answer is: "Just connect it. It should work."
I'll play safe by saying that the following applies to <10TB storage. Some
people reported file systems of 80TB.

2TB partition limitation on X86_64 version??
we have DELL server with Centos 5.3 X86_64 bits version on it. This server also have couple MD1000 connect to it. We configured MD1000 as one hardware Volume size 2990GB.
I tried to use "fdisk" to partition this 2990Gb volume and "fdisk" can only see 2000GB. does 64 bits O.S. still have 2TB limitation on File system?
Does there has other tool can partition disk size large

Disk partitions and LVM limits
Hi,
I've got a DAS DELL MD1000 with a bunch of SATA drives in RAID 5 configuration
with total space of 5.4TB. This box is attached to a CentOS5 system (kernel
2.6.18-53.1.6.el5).
Any idea how to make this space usable?
Is there a limit how big a partition can be? What is the work around?
Is there a limit how big a file system ca be?
I've tried to partition it but no matter how bug

Large RAID volume issues
I have just finished creating an array on our new enclosure and our CentOS 5
server has recognized it. It shows as the full 6tb in the LSI configuration
utility as well as when I ran fdisk:
[root at HOST sbin]# fdisk /dev/sdb
Note: sector size is 2048 (not 512)
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 182292.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,

2TB limit, weird mounting issues on reboot
Greetings,
I'm seeing some weird issues surrounding the 2 terabyte limit on my 3ware
(9590SE, PCI Express model) raid controller. Currently, the raid array is 6
x 500GB disks for a total of around 2.3 terabytes formatted. Looking at the
documentation on the 3ware site, the raid card can handle a single partition
over 2TB, but it still looks like fdisk fails to create a primary partition

formatting large volume
I just got a new server with a Dell MD-1000 SAS unit and 6-750 gigabyte
drives which are now initializing in RAID 10 which will give me just
about 2 terabytes.
I vaguely recall reading that fdisk wasn't suitable for partitioning and
wonder if I shouldn't be using partd instead. I am also wondering if I
should use lvm or just mkfs to create the filesystem. Anyone have
suggestions before I

bugs with large partitions
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

I installed centos4 on a raid system with 7 400GB Hitachi SATA disks in
RAID 5 on the 3Ware card. I set up a 2.2TB EXT3 Partition /opt.
After the install I rebooted and the system went straight into
maintenance mode....! The system reported a problem with /opt, but I was
able to mount it manually and init 4 with no problems. However a reboot

creating partitions on a 2.7TB drive
Hello, sorry for the long email, it's a little hard to explain this issue. The gist of it is that the Ubuntu version of parted allowed me to do something which perhaps should not be allowed i.e. creating partitions on a 2.7TB drive when the partition table is not *gpt* but *msdos*.
I am trying to configure 2 identical servers, both are Dell Poweredge 2970 machines with 6 disks in them

More than 2TB RAID...
Hi,
I just received a new server (HP DL180G5) with 12x 1TB HDs and I bumped into fdisks 2TB limits...
Since this is an entry level server, I can't use the classic HP bootable utilities to create smaller volumes et can only create a big RAID6.
I found out that: using parted, labelling it gpt and creating the partitions would do the trick.
But, what about grub? I read that it does not support

Partition large disk
Hi,
I have a 24TB RAID6 disk with a GPT partition table on it. I need to
partition it into 2 partitions one of 16TB and 1 of 8TB to put ext4
filesystems on both. But I really need to do this remotely. ( if I can
get to the site I could use gparted )
Now fdisk doesn't understand GPT partition tables and pat

Proper partition/LVM growth after RAID migration
Hi
This topic is perhaps not for this list, but it I'm running on a
CentOS 4.4 and it seems that a lot of people here uses 3Ware and RAID
volumes.
I did a RAID migration on a 3Ware 9590SE-12, so that an exported disk
grew from 700GB to 1400GB. The exported disk is managed by LVM. The
problem now is that I don't really know what to do now to let LVM and
my locigal volume to make use of

Curious fdisk report on large disk
I have a 1.5TB internal disk on my server.
I partitioned this with fdisk,
and CentOS-5.6 runs perfectly on it.
But fdisk gives a very strange report.
Here is the perfectly normal response to mount:
-----------------------------
/dev/sdb10 on / type ext3 (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/sdb2 on /boot type ext3

Using LVM snapshots to backup NTFS partitions for windows guests
Hi everyone!
I''ve been reading this list for a while and I''m thinking that the best
way to do backups is using LVM snapshots as discussed here several
times.
The problem is that when i use a LVM logical volume as windows disk,
windows writes the partition table onto the LV so the LV itself is not
a partition - it''s a whole disk.
lvm/device-mapper does not create the

AsteriskNOW x86_64 install GPT partitions
Hello everyone,
I'm having an issue installing AsteriskNOW 2.0.2 on a Dell server. When I
go to intall it, with BIOS legacy mode for partition tables, I get as far
as setting pu the partition tables. However, the installer then informs me
that GPT partition table schemes are required and that I have to resolve
the issue.
I changed from BIOS/MBR/Legacy mode to GPT/UEFI boot mode but then

Best way to extend pv partition for LVM
I've replaced disks in a hardware RAID 1 with larger disks and enlarged
the array. Now I have to find a way to tell LVM about the extra space.
It seems there are two ways:
1. delete partition with fdisk and recreate a larger one. This is
obviously a bit tricky if you do not want to lose data, I haven't
investigated further yet.
2. create another partition on the disk, pvcreate another

Formatting a large disk
I need to install Centos on a machine with 3tb raid disk. (3 ware raid card)
Could someone in the list suggest a utility for partition this disk. I would
like to have the whole disk in 1 partition and format it for ext3. The
default partitioning utility doesn't do this. The OS sits on another SATA
disk and each time during the installation it doesn't format the full disk
which is 3TB.

"WARNING: fdisk GPT support is currently new"
Hi,
I'm currently teaching Linux system administration to a class at the
local "chambre de commerce". The course is based mainly on a minimal
CentOS 7 installation.
Usually my preferred tool for handling manual GPT partitioning is gdisk,
which is not installed on a minimal install. I just gave the good old
fdisk a spin, which enables GPT partition table creation with the

But here's what I see:

1.5TB ext3 partitions - mke2fs problems at 2^31 blocks
I am trying to get a 9550SX to support a 1.5TB raid partition. I am unsure
whether this is a driver problem, or an ext3 problem (as am getting some
other wierdness detecting LUNs), but...
fdisk recognizes the disk OK. I make a single extended partition with a
single 1.5TB logical partition inside it. I then run
mke2fs -j /dev/sdb
It gets to writing inode tables, and wants to write 11176 block
