MusicMatch Jukebox-like mp3 player...
Looking for recommendations.... On WinXP, I use MusicMatch Jukebox version 9 for all my tinkering with mp3s. What do you guys use that would match the functionality of MMJB? I'm mainly interested in the music library setup of MMJB... -- --- David Woyciesjes

TightVNC controlling a Mac OSX 10.4.9.
Need some pointers here. I've got CentOS 4.4, and I want to control my OSX 10.4.9 box via VNC. It connects, and I get a little dot for the mouse cursor, but just a black screen. I can see the mouse controlling the OSX desktop... Here's the output when I start in a terminal: [d at f ~]$ vncviewer VNC server supports protocol version 3.889 (viewer 3.3) VNC authentication succeeded

NVidia Quadro4 200/400 NVS CentoOS 4.4
I've put a Nvidia Quadro card in my machine. It was first detected as Quadro4 200/400 NVS. I have the pigtail for dual monitors. I've tried tweaking the xorg file to get it working, to no avail. So I then downloaded the 9631 version driver from Nvidia. The readme for the newer files said that they didn't support this card. I run the installer, it builds the module, but gets

sambaUserWorkstations (with LDAP) not working with Groups of Computers ?
Hi, I'm trying to use the sambaUserWorkstations option to allow users to log on certain computers only. This option looks great... In fact it looks now a lot better than the 'ldap filter' one than was deprecated with samba 3.0.20... The fact is, if the sambaUserWorkstations option works well with machine names, it doesn't seem to work when specifying groups of machines.

chown command goof up
Basically, what I typed was: chown -R user2:user2 * chown -R user2:user2 .* chown -R user2:user2 *.* ...all in /home. Duh. I forgot which way recursive went. So, I then did: chown -R root:root * chown -R root:root .* chown -R root:root *.* ...this time in / to try and f things. Duh again. Other items need to have other owners & groups. So, how can I fix this? In MacOSX, there is a utility

performance considerations
greets . . . i'm setting up a linux system on a little toshiba libretto -- p-166, 64 megs, plenty of disk space, though -- and i'm wondering as to the performance effects were i to apply ext3. i presume that keeping the journal consumes some finite amount of resources; what i don't know is whether this is repaid or more than repaid in some other way. advice? -- dep There is

Installing Damn Small Linux and R
Installing Damn Small Linux and R Following my experiences with Knoppix (described in another mail) I did similar test on Damn Small Linux (dsl -http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ ). DSL was interesting, because it is the smallest yet fully functional version of Linux, hence more suited to older and smaller computers than Knoppix. Importantly, it uses lightweight windowing system (no KDE or GNOME) so

A bit of a new guy around these parts... I've done a bit of looking, and haven't found any newbie-friendly instructions on how to add the Dag repository to my CentOS4 box. Could somebody help me out and point me in the right direction? Thanks... -- --- David Woyciesjes

compilation of 0.62.4
Hello, I have compiled 0.62.4 under Linux and it runs fine (a gcc/g77 combination). When I try the same thing under AIX (4.1.5) or under dec's OSF (both also gcc/g77) I get problems. Under AIX, system.c complains: system.c: In function `waitForActivity': system.c:150: `fd_set' undeclared (first use in this function) system.c:150: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once

Recommendations for free virtual server tech and Asterisk?
What is the best virtual server tech (and most stable, etc) to use for a asterisk virtual hosting environment? I have a client that wants to do virtual hosting of Asterisk (only SIP or IAX, no PRI, etc) and I'm wondering if Xen or something else would be best? We'd like to stay away from the costs of VMWare if possible. Thanks! Travis -------------- next part -------------- An HTML

CentOS 6.x desktop specs: minimum requirements
Hi, I often have to deal with relatively obsolete hardware in schools, public libraries, small town halls, etc. I still have a handful of CentOS 5.x installations around for these, but I wonder what CentOS 6.x desktop specs are, e. g. the minimum requirements (in terms of CPU and RAM) to reasonably run it. Will a battered first-generation P-IV with 512 MB RAM be sufficient? How much RAM does

R-beta: Some General Questions
I would like to introduce R to the statistical community at large in the Washington, D.C. area. I will be giving a presentation, a part of which will be devoted to a discussion of R, before the Washington Statistical Society (WSS) on 15 October. Anyone residing in the D.C. area is welcomed to come. Also, if a developer should have plans of being Washington and would
