What keeps logging to my console?
Hi folks, I have lots of messages like these appearing on my local CentOS 5.2 consoles: > Oct 17 12:03:29 machine kernel: printk: 1 messages suppressed. > Oct 17 12:03:29 machine kernel: pbond0: received packet with own address as source address I have disabled console logging in syslog.conf, and even if I shut down syslog and kernel logger, the messages keep coming on the local

Video interview with Eben Moglen.
Hi all, Hope this isn't off-topic, but I thought the lists might be interested in a video interview I did with Eben Moglen, the head of the Software Freedom Law Center. Eben has given legal advice and help for Samba for many years, and is a very interesting person to listen to. Hope people find this enjoyable: http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2012/07/geek-time-with-eben-moglen.html

[Possibly OT] - General question: state of internet traffic
Greetings, I've read reports that there has been degradation in Internet traffic over the last month. Until today, I haven't experienced any. However, getting bank record data from chase.com here in NYC seems impossible. I also noticed erratic ftp behavior today; connections can be made but data can't be transferred. This isn't consistent, though. (I have a machine in LA while

inittab - huh what's it good for?
We run a CentOS-5 based hylafax server with external serial modems. We are transitioning to an Asterisk system using IAXmodem running on CentOS-6. On the CentOS-5 system to start the fax modems we added these lines to inittab: # Add fax lines and always ALWAYS run "telinit q" after making a change. fax1:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS0 fax2:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS1

KVM console?
I finally got access to some machines with more resources than the free VMware ESXi license allows which pushed me into trying kvm instead. Seems capable enough for what I need and can even import and run the existing vmdk images I already have. But, I have some questions about accessing the virt-manager console remotely for initial configuration, etc.. Normally I use freenx for remote GUI

TIP for broken ARIN whois
This works for me on Centos 5.6. It may assist newcomers to the Linux world of Centos. whois 51.51.51.51 produces a normal and conventional display of data. However since ARIN, the North American registrar of IP addresses, "modernised" its WHOIS processing, a query to whois 64.64.64.64 will produce a one line summary of possible matches, which always includes ARIN, but omits the

Configuring source-specific routing
I'm attempting to configure source-specific routing so that my servers can exist on multiple subnets from multiple upstream providers. A rough diagram of the network layout: ISP1 router (blackbox, routes subnet A, address on subnet A) \ -----------eth0(firewall)eth1---((servers)) / ISP2 router (blackbox, routes subnet B, address on subnet B) The aim is to allow the servers to use

Openssh-2.1.0p1 test release
This to announce a test release of 2.1.0p1 before making it widely available. This release includes many fixes to problems reported over the last week. [kdo@cosmos.phy.tufts.edu: protocol incompatibility between OpenSSH and SSH secure shell?]
Hello all! I didn't see anyone else reply to this, but I also didn't see anything show up on the OpenSSH development list (Cc'ed here). There is a patch call out right now for the pending release of 2.4.0. I'm wondering if anyone is aware of this and if it's already been covered in 2.4.0? Please reply to list and original poster... ----- Forwarded message

[smbfs] Timing problems with kernel 2.2.x?
[Note: This has been posted to linux-kernel and was ignored. Since smbfs is maintained by the samba team, I am retrying here] Hi! To maintain and install packages from CD-ROM to my Debian/GNU Linux system, I use Debian's apt package. Since my Linux box is stowed away in a closet, I use an smbfs mount to mount the CD-ROM drive from my Windows desktop machine to the Linux box. This used to

CAST5 encryption
Hello all, I was wondering if CAST5 encryption is currently being added the openssh? It's a steller block cipher. No one's found any weaknesses in it yet and it's free for non profit use. Happy Birthday portable OpenSSH!
It was one year ago today that I released a patch to get OpenSSH compiling on Linux. I had no idea just how much trouble releasing that patch would get me into :) Within days I was inundated with patches, improvements and portability enhancements - contributions which have made portable OpenSSH the success it is today. So allow me to thank the current developers and all of you who have

No subject
Can someone explain why smbmount under Samba-2.0.3 (compiled under GNU/Linux Slackware, kernel 2.2.5, egcc 2.90.29) compiles smbmount, however, when I run smbmount, it's really smbclient? If I can't use smbmount, then I can't mount my NT server. smbsh isn't worth crap, it always segfaults on me. I'm running libc5.5.46. Can anyone help me? "There are 3 things to remember

smbmount Directory permissions
Hello, I?m having trouble with smbmount & WinNT 4.0 SP 4 Workstation. Mounting shares on NT from Linux as root is no problem, but if I try to mount shares as a normal user, the directory I want to mount the share, becomes gid root and cannot be accessed by a normal user. Is there any configuration to do for this like setting permissions in smb.conf ? Thanks in advance Andreas Klein ---
