SPF screening implemented at shorewall.net
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Over the past weekend, I added SPF screening on the MTA at shorewall.net. SPF is a mechanism for a domain to use DNS to publish a list of those IP addresses that are used to send legitimate email from that domain. A receiving MTA can use that published information to determine if email from a domain is being sent through an MTA belonging to that

New Perl-based Compiler
My experimentation with a Perl-based compiler for Shorewall is beginning to bear fruit. Here is a timing from the main firewall at shorewall.net using the Perl-based compiler. That compiler generates a script that uses iptables-restore to configure Netfilter. root@lists:~/shorewall# shorewall restart . Compiling... Shorewall configuration compiled to /var/lib/shorewall/.restart Restarting

Change in Shorewall Mailing Lists
Because certain large European ISPs can''t get their act together WRT SPF, I''ve turned on masquerading of lists.shorewall.net. This means that list postings will now have "shorewall.net" sender addresses rather than "lists.shorewall.net". Sorry for the inconvenience but a lot of email is currently bouncing. -Tom -- Tom Eastep \ Nothing is foolproof to a

[*] shorewall requirements - which command
Tom, I''m setting up a new firewall using shorewall-2.0.3a. The box was installed with the minimum, almost only the kernel. before installing shorewall, I installed iptables 1.2.9 and iproute2. Then I did a manual ./install.sh from the directory extracted from the tarball. When I issued a shorewall start, I received hundreds of errors like: /usr/share/shorewall/firewall: line 5520:

problems with boot in multiple ISPs
Hi all, I''ve been trying to set up a shorewall box with 2 ISPs. After a shorewall start/restart, shorewall correctly configures and balances the default main route via both ISPs: [...] default nexthop via 200.173.215.94 dev eth0 weight 10 nexthop via 200.157.40.129 dev eth2 weight 20 but after a boot, that route is not configured. Inspecting the code, I solved

masq - pings and connections get dropped after PREROUTING?
Hello, I have a pretty standard two-interface setup with masquerading, so the local network can connect through the firewall to the Internet. On the firewall box (trevor), eth0 is connected to a cable modem and eth1 is connected to the local network via a crossed cable. There is one other machine on the local network (brian), whose eth0 is at the other end of the crossed cable. I used to have

Shorewall 4.0.0 + Kernel 2.6.21.5-grsec
Hello, My hoster updated its kernel packages... It contained some old problems that should have been fixed. My servers have now a wonderful 2.6.21.5 kernel + grsec running. Both are running Debian 4.0 (stable release). mx:/etc/shorewall# iptables --version iptables v1.3.6 mx:/etc/shorewall# uname -a Linux mx.network-hosting.com 2.6.21.5-grsec-xxxx-grs-ipv4-32 #1 SMP Fri Jul 27 17:18:23 CEST

DNAT + Masq Problem - Yes I read the FAQ I promise
I have a debian woody machine acting as a firewall for a small network. I am trying to do a simple DNAT to port 80 on the protected webserver and masquerade all traffic from the protect subnet outbound. After having read the FAQ and various posts regarding problems with DNAT I''m afraid I''m no closer to a solution. Based on the output from "shorewall show nat" I

Defining "trusted" hosts/nets on a single interface system
Ok, I give up. I tried, really hard, before asking but I must be the most stupid shorewall user on the planet :( My laptop runs a single eth0 interface and knows Net and Firewall as zones and the default "inbound" policies are Net->Any DROP and >ny->Any REJECT. Now at home I have my trusted 192.168.174.240/29 subnet which hosts my very trusted 192.168.174.242 host and I

The second Beta is now available at: http://www.shorewall.net/pub/shorewall/Beta ftp://ftp.shorewall.net/pub/shorewall/Beta Function from 1.3 that has been omitted from this version includes: 1) The ''check'' command is no longer supported. 2) The MERGE_HOSTS variable in shorewall.conf is no longer supported. Shorewall 1.4 behavior is the same as 1.3 with MERGE_HOSTS=Yes.

openswan+shorewall+kernel 2.6.8 debian
I am trying to get a debian system with openswan 2.2 shorewall 2.1.11 + debian kernel 2.6.8 working together. I have read the documentation (IPSEC using Linux Kernel 2.6) and before I go and compile my own modules I would like to know if the standard debian kernel already has the Netfilter+ipsec patches and the policy match patches installed. Does anyone know? thanks Jim

shorewall 2.0.3a, (ULOG) doesn''t log anything
Dear all: Im using shorewall 2.0.3a (debian) w/ ULOG. shorewall starts ok, and the firewall is running, but nothing is printed on the logs. I try, for example, to do a connection to a port that is opened on the server but closed by the FW and I get a connection refused. If I stop the firewall, this port is accesible from the outside. I think I''ve followed all the steps on

Shorewall 4.4.27 Beta 1
Beta 1 is now available for testing. One of the problems I''ve had with the Shorewall products is trying to keep them all in sync. There have been two copies of each shell library and four CLI programs. To simplify maintenance, I have collapsed each of the library pairs into a single library and have reduced the number of CLI programs from four to two (one for the
