Can't print PDFs or PSs in CentOS 5.0
For some reason, when I try to print any graphic PDF (or a PS file made from said graphic), it kills my Minolta 1100 laser printer, and I have to cancel the job, disable the printer and turn the printer off and on as many times as it takes to clear its buffer of the trash. I'm running CentOS 5.0 and have tried Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 for Linux; I have also tried printing the pdf to a file

Another CentOS 5 oddity: reboot and the X server fails to come up
I had to reboot my work machine today, and it came up in text mode (!). I did an init 5, but that had no effect (wrong command?). I killed the three gdm processes, and voila, X server mode. Where do I look to find out what is not right here? All in one good for CentOS
I've asked a similar question before, but this is slightly different - is there a reasonably good, cheap all-in-one scanner-copier-printer-fax device that works well with Linux, CentOS in particular? (Last time I asked about a scanner only, although it was in the context of a Canon MP160, which I never did get to work and wound up taking back.) Thanks. mhr -------------- next part

Good things about CentOS 5; problem with flash in seamonkey
I'd like to point out that overall I am quite pleased with CentOS 5, although I am having more fun with it than I did with 4.4 and I knew less about CentOS then (duh). Most things seem to work fine, including a relatively smooth installation from the DVD image I downloaded, although the number of screensavers I can see (and this could be related to the ATI/dual head problem) is pathetically

How to use a modem under CentOS
I have a modem in my system that comes up with this in lspci: 01:07.0 Communication controller: Agere Systems 56k WinModem (rev 01) What programs under CentOS, if any, can use this modem and how? Problems reading a backup data DVD
I wrote a bunch of files to a backup DVD about two months ago and now neither of my drives will read it. I get mount errors from "not a directory" to something like "unrecognized file system type" and so on, usually after a really long wait and a notice about how the drive is write-protected (duh). Here's what happened most recently: # mount /dev/hdc /mnt mount: block

Problem with 2.6.11.4 kernel and e1000 driver - Correction

Strange content in the kernel dmesg traces
I am experimenting with the kernel (as some of you may know), and I have added a whole slew of traces in some relatively sensitive code in the lower levels of the page cache and i/o functions. Most of this tracing not only works but is highly revealing as to what the kernel is doing and why. However, I am now getting this odd content in the trace log (dmesg), and I cannot figure out what it is

CentOS 2.6.9-42.0.8 issue - no keyboard after reboot
I did this twice now, although the first couple of builds seemed to work ok, they just weren't configured quite right. On my third and fourth builds of the 42.0.8 kernel rpm, when booting, kudzu came up and ran, but the keyboard was somehow not recognized and I had to reboot using the mouse on the login screen (no text appears no matter what I type). I'm using the rpm build strategy from

What's the best way to convert a whole set of file systems?
I am currently running a Windows XP system at home with around 100+ Mb in use over ~400Mb of NTFS file systems. I am installing CentOS 4.4 on it when I change out the mobo/cpu/mem/video combo I just bought. I want to convert all the file systems to (probably) Reiserfs or maybe ext3, but I need to do them one at a time because I only have enough transfer space to accommodate the largest one, or

Problems with building a complete kernel
I have a plain vanilla Centos source (not 100% sure where we got it from), but I can't seem to get a build that installs correctly. I tried the method described at http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel, but rpm doesn't like the output file, and even if I install it with -F, nothing seems to happen - no new kernel, now initrd, nothing. When I tried following the directions in the

OT: Slow browsers or slow connections?
I have AT&T (formerly SBC) DSL for my primary internet connection here, and tonight it has been exceptionally, extraordinarily S - L - O - W.... Pages that normally load in, at most, seconds, are taking several minutes to locate, even common, frequent access pages like Google, Gmail, etc. I called AT&T, of course, and all they know about is IE, which, as you can probably guess, I rarely

Problem with 2.6.11.4 kernel and e1000 driver -Correction
1) I'm actually not building a custom kernel per se, just one from the standard 2.6.11.4 with our configuration. I may be adding a custom driver, but unless I can get the standard kernel to boot,... 2) I have been told that after 2.6.11.4, support for the Infiniband driver is dropped, and we need that. If this is not the case, I would be delighted to know that and proceed accordingly.

MPlayer doesn't seem to work right in CentOS 5
I could be mixed up here, but I have mplayer working perfectly at home in CentOS 4.4, but I just built it here at work for CentOS 5.0 and it doesn't produce any sound. My h/w: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) Dell Precision 390 Intel Pentium 4 3.00GHz 2Gb RAM The sound from Adobe/Macromedia flash player works fine (in

Topic filtering on this list
Someone suggested in an earlier thread about possibly splitting this list (by release or some other topical divide), and it was suggested that people use list filters to extract the topics (release 5.0 was the one mentioned) of interest. I may have gone to the wrong place, but I did go to the mailing list subscription control page for mine, and there are no topics defined on which one may filter.

No sound from Adobe flash player 9.0.31 on CentOS 4.4 x86_64
I have the Adobe (Macromedia) flash player installed on my CentOS 4.4 x86_64 system, but when I try to play a flash movie in SeaMonkey (or Firefox - doesn't matter) I get no sound. I'm using the nspluginwrapper 0.9.91.4 to make it work at all, but there's no sound. All my other sound devices/players work just fine, even my Windows guest on VMWare Server. Any ideas/suggestions? Severe VMware slowdown
In the last few days, I have noticed a drastic slowdown in my VMware Windows guest OS.. I recently bit the bullet and upgraded it from XP SP1 to SP2, and that seemed to work fine for quite a few days. The two major changes I made to the system recently were: 1) The most recent update from CentOS (can't remember which one, but it was within the last two weekd for 5.0). 2) Adding another VM

Strange behavior from OO Writer
I just had the strangest experience I can remember since I ran Windowsas my base OS.... Yesterday I was editing a file in the OO Writer (word processor). Today, it will not open. I copied it to a new file, and it opened fine. I edited it, updated it and closed it. Then I tried deleting the original file and copying the new one to the old name. Won't open. Renamed again, and it opens
