Internet access and R CMD make check-devel
Thomas, In my experience, as pointed out also by Gabor, its often part of the devops build process to remove/comment out these tests or otherwise modify them so that they will pass (if they SHOULD pass) in your environment. That said, a quick look at the Makefile does suggest that failing on the internet tests should be "allowed" and not cause the whole process to return a non-zero

Return/print standard error in t.test()
Dear Thomas, it is, unfortunately, not that simple. t.test() returns an object of class "htest" and not all such objects have standard errors. I'm not entirely sure what the point is since it's easy to compute the standard error of the difference from the information in the object (adapting an example from ?t.test): > (res <- t.test(1:10, y = c(7:20))) Welch Two Sample

Display instruction text on package load
I'm currently working on a new package for R that interfaces with an API. Most of the package's functionality requires users to supply an access key that allows the package to work with the API. I want to display text immediately upon loading the package that instructs/reminds users to enter their access key before attempting to do anything (as the package won't really work without

Documentation of model.frame() and get_all_vars()
Hi everyone, This is about documentation for the model.frame() page. The get_all_vars() function (added in R 2.5.0) is a great addition, but the behavior of its '...' argument is different from that of model.frame() with which it is documented and this creates ambiguity. The current docs read: \item{\dots}{further arguments such as \code{data}, \code{na.action}, \code{subset}. Any

R-devel Digest, Vol 148, Issue 5
It's disappointing that many packages do not have a NEWS file. Perhaps CRAN should require NEWS or CHANGELOG, as long as the system is being reformed to potentially accommodate markdown anyway. -Thomas Thomas J. R won't connect to the internet
Hi I can't get R to connect to the internet. I am running R 1.7.1 on Windows XP and whenever I try to download packages etc from within R using the internet, it fails. OK so I am behind a firewall and use a proxy server.... SO, if I go to my MS-DOS prompt and type: RGui.exe --internet2 everything works.... BUT i can't set up a shortcut for this as Windows (I hate Windows) complains

libcurl support and curlGetHeaders warning message in R CMD check
Dear R devel, Is libcurl support required to run R.devel, or is it optional? I'm compiling R.devel on an older Debian machine that only has libcurl version 7.21.0 The R news file says " Sun, 25 Jan 2015 CHANGES IN R-devel NEW FEATURES Optional use of ?libcurl? (version 7.28.0 from Oct 2012 or later) for Internet access (including on Windows): ... CHANGES IN R-devel

RSXML - Parsing XML Documents on Internet
R Users - I asked about this a few months ago and never did quite figure it out, so with more information, allow me to try again. If I use the following code: library(xml) xmlTreeParse("http://home.comcast.net/~larsenmtl/xmlTestDoc.xml", isURL = TRUE) I receive this error: Error in xmlTreeParse("http://home.comcast.net/~larsenmtl/xmlTestDoc.xml"", : error in

Connections to https: URLs -- IE expert help needed
I've added to R-devel the ability to use download.file() and url() to https: URLs, *only* if --internet2 is used on Windows. This uses the Internet Explorer internals, and only works if the certificate is accepted (so e.g. does not work for https://svn.r-project.org). Now I use IE (and Windows for that matter) only when really necessary, and Firefox has simple ways to permanently accept

Connect to internet
Hi, I have a new workstation and am in the process of moving all my work onto it. I have also installed R 2.10.0 on the new machine. I remember changing my R settings of my old machine (R 2.9.1) to connect to the internet, but I can't remember exactly how. I have tried Sys.getenv(), but it does not give me the proxy settings I would need to finish the setup of my new machine. Does anyone

Function "nsl()" missing in package utils
Dear list, today I stumbled across the function ?nsl()? for the first time in order to perform a hostname lookup. According to the R Reference Index (Version 2.9.1, page 1522), the function should be part of the "utils" package. However, I cannot find it in the utils package of my installation(s). I've tried the R-versions 2.8.1, 2.9.0 and 2.9.1. I'd be very thankful if

internet proxy settings (win)
I cannot access internet through R. My IT-guys told me that I should set the proxy and the port and then everything will be fine. Where can I set them? I use R 2.6.2 under Windows 2000 and these settings are those of the Internet Explorer (no password). I read http://cran.at.r-project.org/bin/windows/base/rw-FAQ.html#The-Internet-download-functions-fail_002e but staring R by "C:\Program

Using Internet proxies
There have been quite a few questions recently about this, so I have tried to gather experience. I set up a proxy using Apache2 (a very common server) behind our firewall and tried various authentication approaches. One comment: all the methods return error messages when they fail. Please don't report `it doesn't work' without the full details. 1) For a proxy that authenticates

Internet Problem in R
Hi, I have a student who's R seems to be unable to connect to the internet. I have verified that her computer has internet access that's working fine, but that R is not able to establish connections. For example, she cannot download packages for R from the URL site, cannot source webpages, or read.table from a webpage (all of these give errors of not being able to establish a
