New URL redirect checks
I don't have an opinion on the URL shorteners, but how about the original question? Redirection can be extremely useful in general. Shortening URLs is only one of its possible applications. FWIW, CRAN uses (303) redirect itself, e.g., https://cran.r-project.org/package=MASS is redirected to https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/MASS/index.html Should these "canonical" CRAN links be

New URL redirect checks
Me too. I have changed some valid URLs in \url{} to \verb{} just to avoid these check NOTEs. I do appreciate the check for the validity of URLs in packages, especially those dead links (404), but discouraging URLs with status code other than 200 (such as 301) feels like overdoing the job. After I "hide" links from R CMD check with \verb{} , it will be hard to know if these links are

I can't comment for CRAN, but generally, shorteners are considered security risk so regardless of the 301 handling I think flagging those is a good idea. Also I think it is particularly bad to use them in manuals because it hides the target so the user has no idea what hey will get. Right, I am sorry, I did not realize the security aspect here. I guess I unconsciously treated CRAN package authors as a trusted source. Thanks for the correction and clarification, and to CRAN for implementing these checks. :) G. New URL redirect checks
Isn't the whole concept of DOI basically link-shortening/redirecting? For example, this link https://doi.org/10.2134/agronj2016.07.0395 redirects to https://acsess.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.2134/agronj2016.07.0395 As a side note, I got so fed up with CRAN check complaints about (perfectly valid) re-directs that I refuse to use the \url{} tag anymore. US 2004 Elections map
even for people who didn't like the outcome of the US elections this year, it must have been a joy to see all the nice (and not so nice) graphs that were shown. As an exercise, I recreated the map shown on the NY-Times website [ http://www.nytimes.com/packages/khtml/2004/11/03/politics/ 20041103_px_ELECT_GRAPHIC.html ] If you're interested,

It will be interesting to see how many standards get broken, and how many proprietary hooks get thrown into the pot. CentOS 8.0 1905 is now available for download
I feel your pain re Gnome. Installing CentOS 8 on a VMware VM which uses BIOS boot mode using the graphical installer results in an installer gui which is chopped off at the right. Workaround is to select the install option, hit the tab key, and append vga=819 and hit F10, which starts the graphical installer on a larger virtual display. Or, better still, use EFI boot mode for your VM, and it

Please Recommend Affordable and Reliable Cloud Storage for 50 TB of Data
Hi, Could you recommend affordable and reliable cloud storage for 50 TB of data? Here are some important factors to consider: 1. Personal/non-commercial use. 2. Must be affordable, since I am unemployed most of the time and have super low levels of income for the past 12 years since I graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2007. 3. Cloud storage provider must not be a

OT: Is randomization for targeted cancer therapies ethical?
Hi Folks: **Off Topic** Those interested in clinical trials may find the following of interest: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/19/health/research/19trial.html It concerns the ethicality of randomizing those with life-threatening disease to relatively ineffective SOC when new "biologically targeted" therapies "appear" to be more effective. While the context may be new, the
