[External] Mitigating Stalls Caused by Call Deparse on Error
We also have a few other suggestions and wishes about backtrace storage and display on the one hand, and display of constructed calls on the other hand. Perhaps it would be better to open a different wishlist item for traceback() to keep the discussions focused? FWIW I think deparsing backtraces lazily is a great idea. Displaying 1 line per call by default in interactive sessions, while being

[External] Mitigating Stalls Caused by Call Deparse on Error
Luke, thanks for considering the issue.? I would like to try to separate the problem into two parts, as I _think_ your comments address primarily part 2 below: 1. How can we avoid significant and possibly crippling ?? stalls on error with these non-standard calls. 2. What is the best way to view these non-standard calls. I agree that issue 2. requires further thought and discussion under a

incomplete results from as.character.srcref() in some cases involving quote()
Hi, The result of as,character() on 'srcref' objects doesn't have the closing ')' in some cases involving 'quote': > e4 <- quote({2+2}) > class(attr(e4, "wholeSrcref")) [1] "srcref" > as.character(attr(e4, "wholeSrcref")) [1] "e4 <- quote({2+2}" As a result printing the object also lacks it and gives an

Mitigating Stalls Caused by Call Deparse on Error
When large calls cause errors R may stall for extended periods.? This is particularly likely to happen with `do.call`, as in this example with a 24 second stall: ??? x <- runif(1e7) ??? system.time(do.call(paste0, list(abs, x)))? # intentional error ??? ## Error in (function (..., collapse = NULL)? : ??? ##?? cannot coerce type 'builtin' to vector of type 'character' ??? ##

Why is srcref of length 6 and not 4 ?
Hello, Consider this file (/tmp/test.R) : <file> f <- function( x, y = 2 ){ z <- x + y print( z ) } </file> I get this in R 2.7.2 : > p <- parse( "/tmp/test.R" ) > str( attr( p, "srcref" ) ) List of 1 $ :Class 'srcref' atomic [1:4] 1 1 4 1 .. ..- attr(*, "srcfile")=Class 'srcfile' length 4 <environment>

removeSource() vs. function literals
If you can afford a dependency on rlang, `rlang::zap_srcref()` deals with this. It's recursive over expression vectors, calls (including calls to `function` and their hidden srcref arg), and function objects. It's implemented in C for efficiency as we found it to be a bottleneck in some applications (IIRC caching). I'd be happy to upstream this in base if R core is interested. Best,

Extracting srcref for S4 methods
Hi, on R version 2.15.1 (2012-06-22) (Platform: i686-pc-linux-gnu (32-bit)) sourced functions have srcref attached as an attribute. Are such data also available for S4 generics and methods? How? (See sample code below) Thank you. Bests, Renaud f <- textConnection( " f <- function(){} setGeneric('myfun', function(x, ...) standardGeneric('myfun'))

Why do methods of "initialize" have no "srcref" attribute as other S4 mehtods?
For documentation we use a system that generates Rd files from special comments in the code. (inlinedocs). It is crucial to be able to get the defining source code for objects like methods to extract the comments from it. Here is an R session that shows how this works for several kinds of methods and (at the end of the session) how if fails for methods of "initialize" >

Proper way to drop 'srcref' from an expression created via substitute(function() ...)?
First, why does this expression have a 'srcref' element: > exprA <- substitute(function(x) a*x, list(a=2)) > print(exprA) function(x) 2 * x > str(as.list(exprA)) List of 4 $ : symbol function $ :Dotted pair list of 1 ..$ x: symbol $ : language 2 * x $ :Class 'srcref' atomic [1:8] 1 20 1 34 20 34 1 1 .. ..- attr(*, "srcfile")=Classes

utils::isS3stdGeneric chokes on primitives and identity
Trace adds something to the body of the function, so it does make sense that it doesn't. Whether traced functions still technically meet the definition of standard s3 generic or not is, I suppose, up for debate, but I would say that they should, I think. As before, if desired I can work on a patch for this if desired, or someone on R-core can just take care of it if that is easier. Best, ~G

trace creates object in base namespace if called on function argument
Please note that this is documented in ?trace. "fun" is matched to what, it is a _name_ of the function to be traced, which is traced in the top-level environment. I don't know why it was designed this way, but it is documented in detail, and hence the expected behavior. Debugging is often, and also in R, implemented in the core. Tracing is implemented on top without specific

trace creates object in base namespace if called on function argument
Dear R-devel, I don't think this is expected : foo <- function() "hello" trace2 <- function(fun) trace(fun, quote(print("!!!"))) base::fun # Object with tracing code, class "functionWithTrace" # Original definition: # function() "hello" # # ## (to see the tracing code, look at body(object)) `untrace()` has the same behavior. You don't need a parser transformation to solve this problem though, the pipe could be implemented as

utils::isS3stdGeneric chokes on primitives and identity
Dear R-devel, utils::isS3stdGeneric tries to subset the body of the function it's fed, primitives don't like that because they don't have a body, identity doesn't like it either because it's body is a symbol. According to the doc, any function is a legal input. See below: identity #> function (x) #> x #> <bytecode: 0x0000000013d6da28> #> <environment:

tools::parseLatex() crashes on "\\verb{}"
Do I understand correctly that we don't want Rd files to be valid latex ? This seems odd to me. I see that `tools::parse_Rd()` doesn't like `\verb!foo!` so maybe roxygen2 is actually doing the right thing (as opposed to just trying to) ? `parse_Rd() ` is probably what I need indeed, for some reason I hadn't found it, so that should fix my own issue here thanks a lot.
