smartmontools SRPM fails
I want to install smarmontools v 5.40, and so I pulled the
SRPM for 5.39 so I could patch and install...
$ wget -Nc
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/6Workstation/en/os/SRPMS/smartmontools-5.39.1-2.el6.src.rpm
However, the install of the source fails.

What is cached swap?
Isn't cached swap somewhat an oxymoron? Why cache virtual?
Am I misunderstanding this line from top?
Swap: 524120k total, 80760k used, 443360k free, 73448k cached

Chroot tool
Hi,
Currently I'm working on building chroot environment for a several
users. The needs of those users are different, so the binaries and their
libraries are differents too. The building process tends to be so tedious.
I'm using a odd script to automatize the copy of needed libraries, but
it not works very fine.
?Is there some tool to automatize the chroot jails creation/management?

How to check for rootkit, troians etc in backed up files?
Hi,
there is a remote (VPS) Centos 4.2 server which *may* have been
compromised. Reinstalling everything from scratch isn't a problem, it
may even be an occasion to improve a few things, the question is
another.
There are backups of necessary shell script, ASCII configuration files
and more or less important email (maildir format, if it matters)
including messages with binary attachments in

CentOS 5 LiveCD - When?
I asked before (about 2 weeks) about this, and was told it was
in testing. I wonder when it will be available. My GF is considering
leaving Debian due to it not recognizing her hardware very well,
and I thought a CentOS 5 LiveCD might be a reasonable way for her
to see whether CentOS might do a better job.
If no LiveCD is forthcoming soon, then I'll burn a copy of the
CentOS 4 LiveCD and let

Decompiler?
Dear All
I have disassembled the object file on my CentOS server , by the following :
#objdump wmain
In the output , I have recognized the intended subroutine that I need to find the exact command syntax that it sends out . To this end , I tried to capture it through 'tcpdump' but didn't success . I read this segment assembly language code but it is somewhat difficult to decode . Can

I have a grub.conf (below) with pci=nomsi, also /proc/cmdline and dmesg

How can this be? there are no strange characters after quiet and before
pci=nomsi.
It was edited with vi.
What can I do to get this parameter in my kernel boot line.

Backup solution to backup /var/spool/imap above 150GB data
Hi
We have an issue with one of our clients , they have a mail server with
the /var/spool/imap partition as 150 GB . They need to take differential
backup on to /backup partition ( a different HDD of total 250 GB space ) .
We have tried dar , rsync, rdiff and impasync . But its is not sufficing the
need as to take a lot of time and consumes a lot of I/O .
Is there any back up solution that

compilers a security risk?
I manage a web hosting server that we've recently upgraded, in part so
we could accommodate a domain that will enable community mapping. In a
recent exchange of mails one developer said:
"I could build the package directly on the server machine you have,
provided that the potential security risk posed by having compilers
installed is not an issue."

Swap Considerations
I am considering installing CentOS 4.4, and am interested in
how best to set up. I have been using FC2 and helping administer
a Debian machine for a few years, but do not consider myself a
Linux guru.
My current set up uses a /swap partition which is 2x my memory
size
mem = 256 MB
$ sudo /sbin/fdisk -l
/dev/hda6 76506 77545 524128+ 82 Linux swap

Mount floppy on startup?
On bootup, it seems CentOS automatically mounts the floppy drive to
/media/floppy.
Is there a way to stop this from happening, short of removing the floppy
drive from the system (as I don't use it)?
Thanks,
Ash Christopher

No Spaces in Directory names
How can I make it so my users can not create folders with spaces in
them? Or allow them to create such folders but rewrite them on the
hardrive with a "_" or some other symbol. I have looked threw the wiki
but couldn't find anything about folder name restrictions or folder name
rewriting (rewrite the space to a "_").

Default PXE boot timeout
Hello all,
I have a NFSroot'ed a couple of OS platforms so that servers can have
the option (web access) to:
a. boot off a CentOS NFS root over the network
b. or LOCAL hardrive (FreeBSD).
A Simple script controls this so that if user selects NFS root -
- /etc/dhcpd.conf will be updated to include the filename "pxelinux.0"
parameter and it will find its configuration file based

upgrade problem
Currently we have RH7.3 with compiler gcc 2.96.x
My mission, should I choose to accept it, involves moving
our embedded application to CentOS 4.1 with gcc 3.x
Problem is that about 1/2 million lines of code that gcc 2.96
accepts gives fatal fits to the gcc 3.x compiler from CentOS 4.1
I don't know how many fatal fits, as some disguise others etc.

Problem using syslinux with hard drive partition
I have been succesful in using syslinux to boot from a hard drive, by dd'ing
a Linux (LRP) image onto the drive and then running syslinux (i.e. dd
if=the_image of=/dev/hda followed by a syslinux /dev/hda), however I'm having
problems getting it to work from a partition on the hardrive. I'm trying to
use syslinux on a small 100MB FAT16 partition (same commands as before, just
