String Vector Encoding
Hello, I was reading through serialize.c and i couldn't answer something. In readItem, case CHARSXP, rules exists to adjust the read string for string encoding. Q1. I couldn't find where the encoding of the elements of the string vector are written? Is it when writeItem writes out the attributes of the item? But i couldn't find encoding in the attributes field x <-

Unable to build with working iconv support on Solaris9/x86
Hi all, Have had a frustrating time trying to get R 2.5.1 running happily on Solaris9/x86, the problems seem to stem mainly from libiconv support. After a couple of hours of experimenting, I came across the following combination, note that iconv (the program, but not the library) exists in the Solaris base system, I've manually installed the full GNU distribution in

Windows iconv() "failure" in certain locales
This is a continuation of the R-devel thread with subject "suggestion to fix packageDescription() for Windows users" : As I said there, a patch should rather address the underlying problem in packageDescription rather than a kludgy workaround patch for citation(). (For that same reason, Ben Marwick proposed to fix packageDescription() rather than the symptom seen in citation().)

suggestion to fix packageDescription() for Windows users
I'd be curious to know what others think of Rich's patch. If it is acceptable, I can spend time that I was going to look at it this week on another bug. -----Original Message----- From: Rich Calaway Sent: Friday, June 23, 2017 6:34 PM To: Nathan Sosnovske <nsosnov at microsoft.com>; Duncan Murdoch <murdoch.duncan at gmail.com>; Andrie de Vries <apdevries at gmail.com>

special latin1 do not print as glyphs in current devel on windows
This is a follow-up on my initial posts regarding character encodings on Windows (https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-devel/2017-August/074728.html) and Patrick Perry's reply (https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-devel/2017-August/074830.html) in particular (thank you for the links and the bug report!). My initial posts were quite chaotic (and partly wrong), so I am trying to clear things up a

ActiveRecord::Base.connection.create_database defaults to latin1
If you use ActiveRecord::Base.connection.create_database you''ll notice that by default the created db will use latin1 encoding. I created a plugin to handle different charset and collations (on top of helping you with other boring DB tasks). You can check out the early version of the plugin svn checkout svn://rubyforge.org/var/svn/raketasks/db_tasks (I really need to move my projects out

read.spss and encodings
Hi! I'm having trouble with importing spss files containing non-ascii characters (R 2.4.1, debian linux, i386). To reproduce: Download the following file: http://statmath.wu-wien.ac.at/data/spss/de/comphomeneu.sav require (foreign) Sys.setlocale (locale="C") read.spss("comphomeneu.sav")$ARBEIT[1] # prints: # [1] im B\374ro # Levels: im B\374ro zuhause \374 of course

special latin1 do not print as glyphs in current devel on windows
Thank you!. My apologies again for not including the console output in my message before. I sent another e-mail with the output in the meantime, so it should be a bit clearer now, what I am seeing. In case I missed something, please let me know. Yes, I am using latin1 and cp1252 interchangebly here, mostly because Encoding() is reporting the encoding as "latin1". You presumed correctly

Update to website not printing special Characters
I thought you might be interested in how far I have got with solving my problem with MySql(via phpMyAdmin) to website character_set problems. I thought I had solved the problem when my characters on my website started showing the special characters. This was a partial success though. When I went back to phpMyAdmin and entered new text the problem was the same, but reversed. What now happens is

head/tail breaking change
Hi R-devel community, I am aware of changes in R-devel in head/tail methods but I was not expecting that to be a breaking change. # R 3.6.1 ar = array(1:27, c(3,3,3)) tail(ar, 1) #[1] 27 The current output of R-devel is something that I would expect from a tail(ar, c(1, Inf, Inf)) or tail(ar, c(1, NA, NA)) calls. Is it going to stay like this or there are plans to mitigate this breaking

Thank you Gabriel, I agree that new behaviour makes much more sense. Just wanted to confirm before resolving compatibility of my unit tests.

R 2.9.2 crashes when sorting latin1-encoded strings
Hi everyone! I think I stumbled over a bug in the latest R 2.9.2 patched for OS X: > R version 2.9.2 Patched (2009-09-24 r49861) > i386-apple-darwin9.8.0 When I try to sort latin1-encoded character vectors, R sometimes crashes with a segmentation fault. I'm running OS X 10.5.8 and have observed this behaviour both with the i386 and x86_64 builds, in the R.app GUI as well as on

MySQL connection collation
Hi! I have ran on problem with collations. In database.yml I have set: encoding: utf8, but when in console run: >> ActiveRecord::Base.connection.collation => "latin1_swedish_ci" It is Rails 2.1, mysql gem 2.7, mysql 5.1.22. This leads to errors like: Mysql::Error: Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,COERCIBLE) for operation
