RIOT 2020
Reasonable -- I am a co-organizer of RIOT and spent 10 years building real-time Java virtual machines.
My conclusion: no one cares. :-(

RIOT 2020
If people want to create a new interpreter (for R or any other
data-driven programming language), or do something closely related
(such as adapt an existing interpreter), I think a better strategy
would be to focus on real time computing.
I note that Oracle who appears to be sponsoring this event, also
acquired ChorusOS (via their acquisition of Sun). I think they should
release ChorusOS under an

Should CRAN accept packages with non-R code that transcompiles into R code?

I would like to support Java style syntax for class definitions.
(Then it could transcompile into either S3 or S4).
And possibly change some other things while I'm at it.
Maybe, integers (rather than numerics) as

ALTREP wrappers and factors
Hi Jiefei and Kylie,
Great to see people engaging with the ALTREP framework and identifying
places we may need more tooling. Comments inline.

Any plans for ALTREP lists (VECSXP)?
Hi Kylie,
Is it a list with only numerics in it? (I only see REALSXPs there, but
obviously inspect isn't showing all of them). If so, you could load it up
into one big vector and then also keep partitioning information around.
Bioconductor does this (see ?IRanges::CompressedList ). The potential
benefit here being that the underlying large vector could then be a big
out-of-memory altrep. How

Should CRAN accept packages with non-R code that transcompiles into R code?
It may be possible to create an R-like programming language that
transcompiles into R code (or otherwise constructs R objects and calls
R functions).
I'm not sure whether it would pass R check or not, I will probably try...
But the bigger question is:
Should CRAN accept packages written in such a way?
I could email Kurt Hornik or Uwe Ligges, and ask them.
However, I thought that I would ask

Statement about OGG support in Rio Riot
FYI, looks like more people need to let SonicBLUE know that OGG support is
an important factor in there purchasing decisions.

Is missingness always passed on?
There's a StackOverflow question
https://stackoverflow.com/q/22024082/2554330 that references this text
from ?missing:
"Currently missing can only be used in the immediate body of the
function that defines the argument, not in the body of a nested function
or a local call. This may change in the future."
Someone pointed out (in https://stackoverflow.com/a/58169498/2554330)

Coping with non-standard evaluation in R program analysis
Hello R experts,
I plan to develop a tool for dynamic analysis of R programs. I would like to trace function calls at runtime, capturing argument and return values. Following a suggestion made some time ago on this list, my high-level implementation strategy is to rewrite the AST, augmenting call expressions with pre-call and post-call shims to capture the arguments and return value,

Enhanced Messaging and softphones
Hello,
I've just read in [1] about SIP MESSAGE addition to both chan_pjsip and
ConfBridge.
It seems very interesting addition as it brings the capability to mix
voice, video and text in conferencing.
On an other hand, there are some softphones (Zoiper, Bria, ...) that tout
voice, video and chat capability.
Though Enhanced Messaging solution described in [1] seems more attractive
to me in the

FastR
Dear all,
at UseR! 2013, the FastR project was announced by Tomas Kalibera, Petr Maj, and Jan Vitek. FastR is an implementation of the R programming language in Java using AST interpretation and specialisation for improved performance. Since, the implementation has been extended to support JIT compilation, leading to performance improvements.
The goal of the project is to further the R community

Authenticating AD users and Local users
With a lot of help, I just got AD authentication working (Samba 4.8.3, CentOS 7.6, using Winbind).
I then added a local account to a share, but I can’t login.
My smb.conf has “security = ads”, but I can’t figure out how to use that AND authenticate local users.
How can I authenticate Active Directory AND local users?

Dsync ignores INBOX when converting from mbox to maildir
Hi,
I am trying to convert email box in mbox format to maildir++. It
converts all folders except INBOX. For example:
dsync -D -v -f -u 'info at example.org' mirror 'maildir:~/Maildir'
prints:
dsync(info at example.org): Info: Sport: only in source
So it converts Sport folder, but INBOX folder is ignored.
dovecot.conf contains:
mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u

I can't use the managed bitrate option in OddCast on my K6II-500 CPU!
(Overclocked to 525, WinXP Pro,192MB RAM). I would like to. Normal VBR
