Poor documentation for "adj" and text()
Hello Core Team,
I sent this patch over a year ago. It looks like it was sent in
response to another user's complaint which echoed some of my own
observations about problems in the documentation for 'text'. Did
anyone have a chance to look it over? I'd like to get it out of my
queue.
Thanks,
Frederick

Poor documentation for "adj" and text()
Thanks Ulrich for sharing your experience.
I'm attaching a patch which tries to address the issues you raised.
I agree with you in principle, but I think it makes sense to leave
some details under "Details". However, the descriptions in "Arguments"
should give enough information that a user can get the function to do
something predictable in at least one situation, and I

mtext adj= wrong with several las= (PR#7188)
Dear all,
Our quite basic function mtext() does wrong adjustments in some parameter
configurations. This gets obvious when using multi line texts: There is no
way to properly adjust text perpendicular to axis 2, for example.

equivalent of Splus command axis(..., srt=45, adj=1) in R
Dear R-users
moving from Splus to R (under Windows), I notice that command "srt" within a
plot in the original Splus code is ignored by R.
For example, if a plot something and then include the line of code
axis(1, at=Time, labels=Text, srt=45, adj=1)
the srt=45 command within the axis() command fails to draw Text at 45
degrees on the x-axis in R but it works properly in Splus.

text() and vector arguments like adj
Hello,
I remarked that the function
## Default S3 method:
text (x, y = NULL, labels = seq(along = x), adj = NULL,pos = NULL, offset = 0.5, vfont = NULL,cex = 1, col = NULL, font = NULL, ...)
accepts vectors of arguments (of the same length) except for the parameter adj.
When passing a vector of information for adjusting the labels, only the first value
is taken.
Any special reason for this ?

Spacing of text does not match spacing of bars in barplot
I have a very standard barplot. My labels are too long to be printed
horizontally under each bar, so I am using text to put the labels on a 45
degree slant.
However, the labels are spaced more narrowly than the bars, so on an 8
vertical bar plot, the end of the eighth label is lined up with the seventh
bar.
Preferably I don't want to do every text label separately (I'm having this

par(las=.) gives wrong "adj" for mtext() (PR#726)
For R Version 1.1.1 and R-devel (Linux)...
Sorry, there's no time to fix myself now
{e.g., after starting a new device} :
par(las=3); plot(1:10); par(las=1) ; mtext("mtext")
Gives a left-adjusted (as for adj = 0) mtext,
even if par("adj") is still 0.5
Note that I'm also not convinced that mtext() should follow par("las")
as it does in the

Is text(..., adj) upside down? (Or am I?)
?text says
"'adj' allows _adj_ustment of the text with respect to '(x,y)'.

But it looks like 0, 1 specify top, bottom respectively in the y
direction.

Plotting barplot and scatterplot on same device - x-axis problem
Hi R-users
I'm a relative newbie and uses R mostly for graphical purpose. I have a
layout problem when plotting a scatterplot and a barplot using
par(new=TRUE). The baseline of the x-axis is not positioned equal for the
two plotting functions (see picture) and I have been unable to find out how
this is changed.

lines(..., lwd=3) inaccuracy
Using a line width > 1 results in not only a thicker line but also some fuzz
in the other direction, as shown in this example program. You will see that
the thick vertical black lines extend below the gray scale horizontal lines.
Does anyone know whether this is intended or is it a bug? The application
is for displaying a correlation matrix (here just some random U(0,1)s).

Vertical string with horizontal letters
I'm trying to format text on a plot such that the string is vertical but the letters are horizonal. I tried
text(1,1,label="output", srt=270)
This gives the string rotation I want, but that rotates the entire "output" so the letters are also rotated. I've also tried
text(1,1,label="output", srt=270, crt=270)
to no avail. par()$crt doesn't seem to affect

grid.newpage()
Hi,
I'm trying to customize a window with 2 graphs.
I'm able to do the first one with something like this general example
par(mfrow=c(1,2),cex.axis=0.85,cex.lab=0.80,mai=c(1.3,1,0.5,0),las=3)
bplot<-barplot(bar.values,names.arg=cf.names,width=0.5,ylab="% Area held")
abline(h=0.3,lty=3,col="red")
abline(h=0.1,lty=3,col="blue")

"shifted" bar chart / battleship curve
What I want to do is create a horizontal bar chart matrix for a set of data that have a common set of variables (e.g., % of As, % of Bs, etc.) listed on the Y-axis and groups (e.g., Classes) on the X-axis. The key here is that the bars for each individual class plot are "centered" rather than left or right-justified. In archaeology plots similar to this are called battleship curves or

How do I exactly align the right hand side of "mtext" relative to a plot device? Beyond "adj".
Hi,
I have a problem with aligning text which I'm adding to a plot using
"mtext". I would like to specify the position of the right hand end of the
text string, relative to the device (in the left-right direction).
I've been looking at the use of the argument "adj". But this can't be used
to specify the rightmost point of the text. Neither does it specify exactly

'at' parameter in mtext(.., adj=0, outer=T) (PR#396)
Depending on the setting of par()$usr,
the 'at' setting in mtext(.., adj=0, outer=T) may cause the
text to appear in an anomalous position (e. g. in the first
instance below, at the left of the plot region rather than
at 'at=0' in the figure region), or the text may not appear
at all.
If one does not set the 'at' parameter the text appears
(with 'adj=0') on the

pass longer arguments to adj of text()
Hi,
text()'s pos does handle more dimensional labels, while adj does not -
or how can I pass an array to text() and use the adj argument (skyblue
text)?
plot(-1:1,-1:1)
text(c(0,0),c(0,0),c("a","b"),pos=c(1,2),col="red")
text(c(0,0),c(0,0),c("a","b"),adj=cbind(c(1,2),c(1,1)),col="skyblue")

axis ignores srt/crt (PR#249)
Rotated text for axis labels should be possible with one of
par(srt=90)
axis(1,at,labels)
par(srt=0)
or
axis(1,at,labels,srt=90)
(or similar with crt instead of srt)
None of these works in pre0.65 or in 0.64.2

Centering multi-line strip text in lattice
I'm having trouble centering multi-line strip text in lattice. As the
code below demonstrates bounding box of the text is centered within
the strip, but the first line isn't centered in relation to the longer
second line. The "adj" argument to par.strip.text doesn't seem to do
much. Suggestions?

Rotate values on Y axis
Hi,
I have been working through one of the examples on the FAQ about
rotating the labels on the x axis, I need to do the same but for the y
axis. I have managed to change some of the code, but I am still not
getting there, there is still something wrong. My syntax is as follows:
> par(mar = c(5, 7, 4, 2) + 0.1)
> plot(1 : 8, yaxt = "n", ylab = "")
> axis(2,
