SPlus to R
I'm trying to convert an S-Plus program to R. Since I'm a SAS programmer I'm not facile is either S-Plus or R, so I need some help. All I did was convert the underscores in S-Plus to the assignment operator <-. Here are the first few lines of the S-Plus file:
sshc _ function(rc, nc, d, method, alpha=0.05, power=0.8,
tol=0.01, tol1=.0001, tol2=.005, cc=c(.1,2),

R-devel (rev 76409) fails 'make check': non-generic function 'isSymmetric' given to findMethods()
Duncan that does indeed look to be the case. Many thanks!
In particular, tests/reg-tests-1d.R optionally loads the Matrix
namespace which allows the test to succeed. Compare:
~/R-rc_2019-04-21_r76409/bin/Rscript -e "options(warn=2);
library(Matrix); res <- findMethods('isSymmetric'); print('success')"

unexpected behaviour of isSymmetric() (PR#14000)
Full_Name: Mike Danilov
Version: 2.9.0
OS: Fedora Core 9
Submission from: (NULL) (142.103.121.198)
When checking for the symmetry of a matrix, function isSymmetric.matrix() gets
confused by the discrepancy of colnames/rownames if its argument. See the code
snippet below. Perhaps it's a problem of the matrix product which copies
colnames of the first argument but not the rownames of the

Closing a fifo() on Windows core dumps R (3.2.5, 3.3.0 RC and devel)
The following core dumps R 3.2.5, R 3.3.0 RC and R devel on Windows.
I have tried to use a minimal setup (for all versions tested), i.e.

C:\> set R_DEFAULT_PACKAGES=base

is this matrix symmetric
Hi,
I have this symmetric matrix, at least I think so.
col1 col2 col3
[1,] 0.20 0.05 0.06
[2,] 0.05 0.10 0.03
[3,] 0.06 0.03 0.08
or
structure(c(0.2, 0.05, 0.06, 0.05, 0.1, 0.03, 0.06, 0.03, 0.08
), .Dim = c(3L, 3L), .Dimnames = list(NULL, c("var1", "var2",
"var3")))
But isSymmetric() doesn't agree. Any comment? I am on R 2.10.1 Thanks.

Dispatching on a dgCMatrix does not work.
I represent a graph as an adjacency matrix of class "dgCMatrix" (from the Matrix package).

b 1 . 1 . .

To check if the matrix defines and undirected graph, I have made the following functions/methods:
is.UG <- function (object) {
UseMethod("is.UG")

always about positive definite matrix
1. Martin Maechler's comments should be taken as replacements
for anything I wrote where appropriate. Any apparent conflict is a
result of his superior knowledge.
2. 'eigen' returns the eigenvalue decomposition assuming the
matrix is symmetric, ignoring anything in m[upper.tri(m)].
3. The basic idea behind both posdefify and nearPD is to compute

export tables to Excel files
Dear R users,
I've just posted a similar question about Illustrator.
This time I would like to export the results of my statistic tables and
my dataframes into Excel files.
Up to now I've used write.csv(), but I have to resave every file in .xls
in Excel.
I would like to know if there is a function or package to export
directly into *.xls.
I have found xlsReadWrite which would be

apply on large arrays
I have a big contingency table, approximately of size 60*2*500*500,
and I need to count the number of cells containing a count of 1 for each
of the factors values defining the first dimension.
Here is my attempt:
tab1<-with(pisa1,table(CNT,GENDER,ISCOF,ISCOM))
tab2<-apply(tab1,1:4,function(x)ifelse(sum(x)==1,1,0))
tab3<-apply(tab2,1,sum)
Computing tab2 is very slow.
Is there a faster

Evaluating expresssions as parameter values
I need to play games with an expression similar to the following one:
print(xyplot(DepVar ~ Group|Covar, groups=Othergroup,
data=mydf, pch = 18 ,main="Testcase",auto.key = TRUE))
The problem is that the formula argument (the first argument)
an the groups argument are passed over from another program as strings.
The formula argument does not pose problems,

New unique name
In some languages there is a function
gensym()
which returns a new unique name (in the current environment).
This is quite helpful when one has to do temporary assignments.
I could not find such a function in R.
Is there one?

installing spam package is failing (spam_0.29-1)
The primary error seems to be:
"Creating a new generic function for "diff" in "spam"
Error in setGeneric(f, where = where) :
must supply a function skeleton, explicitly or via an existing
function"
And the full output follows. Any thoughts on what may be happening
and/or how to work around the problem?
Thanks!
