JDataFrame API
Hi Simon,
Thanks for your feedback. -- this is an observation that I wasn't
considering when I wrote this mainly because I am, in fact, working
with rather small data sets. BTW: There is code there, it's under the
bitbucket link -- here's the direct link if you'd still like to look
at it:

JDataFrame API
Tom,
this may be good for embedding small data sets, but for practical purposes is doesn't seem like the most efficient solution.
Since you didn't provide any code, I built a test case using the build-in Java JSON API to build a medium-sized dataset (1e6 rows) and read it in just to get a ballpark (see

Reading JSON files from R
Hello All -
I am trying to use RJSONIO to read in some JSON files.
I was wondering if anyone could please comment on the level of complexity of
the files it can be used to read, exports from or directly from NoSQL DBMS
like MongoDB and such.
Also, i understand that in reading the JSON file RJSONIO will automatically
create the necessary structures. However I cannot seem to use to to read the

Convert json data to an r dataframe
Hello to everybody,
I need to convert a json dataset in an R dataframe.
I suppose that I'd need to use rjson or rjsonio package.
The json dataset is:

It would be nice if someone can help me to create a function like the one

Extracting results from Google Search
Dear list,
I have a long list of towns in Africa and would need to get their
geographical coordinates. The Google query [/TownName Country coordinates/]
works for most of the TownNames I have and give a nicely formatted Google
output (try Ingall Niger coordinates for an example). I would like to launch
a loop on the list of names I have and automatically extract the coordinates
given by Google.

I am trying to use RJSONIO
I have:
x <- c(0,4,8,9)
y <- c(3,8,5,13)
z <- cbind(x,y)
Any idea how to convert z into the JSON format below?
I want to get the following JSON output to put into a php file.
[[0, 3], [4, 8], [8, 5], [9, 13]]
Thank you.

Change global env variables from within a function
Hi,
I've looked all over for a solution to this, but haven't had much look
in specifying what I want to do with appropriate search terms. Thus I'm
turning to R-help.
In the process of trying to write a simple function to rename individual
column names in a data frame, I ran into the following problem: When I
rename the columns within my function, I can't seem to get it to

Extract letters from a column
Dear list:
I would like to extract three letters from first and second elements
in one column and make a new column.

install.packages problem
I'm trying to install the rdatamarket package. I did an
install.packages('rdatamarket') command but got an error about half way
through the install as follows:

checking for curl-config... no
Cannot find curl-config
ERROR: configuration failed for package ?RCurl?
The install continued after the error but looks like it was completed. I'm

Segfault on read.socket with long message
I'm trying to implement a connection between two processes using a
simple socket mechanism. The messages are rather long object stored as
JSON.
R is crashing with a segmentation fault when I try to read my test
message (which is 5305 bytes long). I first send the length in bytes
and then I send the actual message.
Here is my R code:

library(futile.logger)

lattice multiple y-scale possible?
Hi
I am attempting to use the lattice bwplot function to generate boxplots
of numerous parameters (1-panel/parameter) by site (x-axis). The
parameters have quite different ranges of values, so it would be best to
have a separate y-axis range for each panel. Below is a basic example of
what I am trying to do. As is seen, the y-axes need to be scaled
individually to make this useful. Any

Creating a "shifted" month (one that starts not on the first of each month but on another date)
Hello!
I have a data frame with dates. I need to create a new "month" that
starts on the 20th of each month - because I'll need to aggregate my
data later by that "shifted" month.
I wrote the code below and it works. However, I was wondering if there
is some ready-made function in some package - that makes it
easier/more elegant?
Thanks a lot!

function similar to "get" that works for both an object, and elements of an object?
#Is there a single function similar to "get" that works for both an object, and elements of an object ?
#(I want the function to be able to return objects, and/or the deeper elements of an object.)
#(i.e. elements of a dataframe and/or list)?
#e.g.
tempdf = data.frame(a=c(4,5,6) , b=c(10,11,12) )
templist= list(x=tempdf, y=c(1,2))
get('tempdf') #works as desired

Recursive function calls
My apologies, I know that this is not a new problem, but I'm not sure how
to find the answer
I want to recursively loop over an object and trim trailing white space.
When I use this function on a list of data.frame I get output like this:

Trying to install rjsonio and I've run into a couple of issues.
1. When installing from R, it's starts to download, then I get

I receive the same message,

Looping through a series of (csv) files
Dear Colleagues.
This should be a very common operation and I believe there should be a nice
way in R to handle it. I couldn't find it in the manual or by searching
online. I am wondering if I could ask for some help in this community.
I have 48 csv files; each stores the data for a specific month. The 48
corresponding months are consecutively from January, 2001 to December, 2004.

Segfault on read.socket with long message
Thanks for the link.? Somehow the information about how to join the
bugzilla site was not available at bugzilla and buried in the CRAN web
site instructions on reporting bugs (which pointed me at Bugzilla and
not the page you showed me).
The example is pretty minimal.? I left the tracing statements
(flog.trace()) and the toJSON, fromJSON in as I thought they might
provide some context for
