R-1.8.0 + IBM VisualAge/C for AIX compiler
A while ago I compiled R 1.7.0 for AIX (with the above compiler - I'll
call it xlc) and I was surprised that it went quite smoothly.
Unfortunately with R 1.8.0 it's not as easy, but I succeeded at least
partially. Static R works fine (after some tweaking), but
--enable-R-shlib fails resp. produces a buggy R. Following are the
problems I encountered (in a warning-to-fatal-error

If you do want to play with maintainer-mode, first check out

it is what is done in the nightly builds on OSX. (Actually Mavericks. The comment is old.)

R, AIX 64-bit builds - trying to understand root cause for message: "Error: Line starting 'Package: tools ...' is malformed!"
I would be "pleased" if you would try packages - i.e., none of "Toolbox"
or Perzl rpm's.
The iconv I supply might not be working as is (I will need to install a
new system to check). However, this is why I have been testing with
R-3.2.3 - to side-step the system library dependencies.

Two things here
- possibly irrelevant, but I'd avoid building in the source directory. (mkdir ../BUILD ; cd ../BUILD; ../R/configure)
- don't turn on mantainer mode. You are not a maintainer, and if you want to play at being one, I think you

Shared Library Support for AIX?
Fellow R Enthusiasts,
I noted on the "R Installation and Administration" page, section C.9
that "--enable-R-shlib" is reported not to work for AIX. Has anyone made
any further progress with this as of late? I've successfully compiled R
2.3.1 on AIX 5.2ML7 and AIX 5.3ML3. However, I'd really like to use
RSPerl so I can attack R with Perl. Is there a way to do this

Dear all,
Starting all over again with R-devel of 22-11-2015.
After getting the dependancies (minimal graphics initially) I have been
able to come this far - with a 64-bit build on AIX.

Building R for AIX in 64-bit mode
Hi.
Just wanted to let you know I am getting close to packaging R for AIX in
64.bit mode.
One comment - the libtool.m4 I see used is quite old. The one I have on my
system is 2.4.6, and what I see in R says:
I am hoping a new libtool will clean up most of the manual work now needed.
# Which release of libtool.m4 was used?
macro_version=2.2.6
macro_revision=1.3012
This may be all that is

compile question
Hi Michael,
I experienced the same thing in the past. After you get the R-3.2.2.tar.gz
and uncompress it, enter the R-3.2.2 directory and run the ./configure and
make from there, rather than a different one.
One other thing, you probably already did this, but just in case you might
want to double-check this section as well:

Hanging -- please help decipher event report
I'm running some code in R64 on a Mac OS 10.6.8 that calls a C program
through the dyn.load() function. The code hangs after several days of
computation, and I've having trouble locating the problem. Can anyone
decipher this info from the error report, and tell me if this is a problem
in R64, or in the C code? Thanks very much in advance.
A few hints: "pa" is the name of the C

Hi guys,
I am trying to compile a 64bit version of R 2.7.0 on AIX 5.3. And I am
running into some troubles. I also try the latest version 2.7.1 and
get the very similar errors.
