Hello, I am not able to query Sybase IQ database from R using RODBC package. Check the below code R> sybaseiq.query <- function (sql, ..., as.is = FALSE) { connstr <- "Driver={Sybase IQ};UID=ajadhav2;PWD=*****;ServerName=PSGSESHR01A_IQ;CommLinks=SharedMemory,TCPIP{host=psgseshr01_iq.sg.csfb.com;port=3051}" chan <- odbcDriverConnect(connstr)

Several R vs S-Plus issues
Hi, all, I've been converting code from S-Plus ("S" for short) to R for a few weeks. Here are some differences I've found, aside from the big well-known ones (scoping, models, data storage) and the contents of Kurt Hornik's FAQ section 3.3.3. Let me start with the ones that seem like serious bugs or deficiencies: 1) LETTERS[c(NA,2)] in S is

do I need plyr, apply or something else?
Dear all, This is what I'd like to do (I have an implementation using for loops, which I designed before I realised just how slow R is at executing them - this process currently takes days to run). I have a large dataframe containing corporate bond data, columns are: BondID Date (goes back 5years) Var1 Var2 Term2Maturity What I want to do is this: 1) For each bond, at each given date,

RE: [R] Several R vs S-Plus issues (PR#1112)
Also in assign() there some arguments lacking in R such as 'frame' and 'where', though I guess that 'frame' in S may be similar to 'pos' in R. read.table() suggestions
Hi, I understand work is being done to improve read.table(), especially by Prof. Brian D. Ripley. I offer below a version that I wrote, in the hope some aspects of it may prove useful or at least inspire discussion. Be aware that my version differs in a couple fundamental ways that reflect my aversion to dataframes and factors. So it returns a list of vectors which are all character,

RBloomberg: unable to use 'Corp' to fetch data
I am trying to get new Cusip (registered security) from old . This can be done in excel using BDP command. For example: =BDP("000361AJ Corp","ID_CUSIP"), will give 000361AK1. Can this be done using RBloomberg? Any help will be much appreciated. Chirag Maru Senior Quantitative Analyst IRON Financial 847-715-3221 Direct | 847-715-3321 Fax | 847-715-3200 Main 630 Dundee

left-justified fixed-width format
I need to save data in fixed-width format without headers and reading the help archive leads me to believe that sprintf is pretty much the only way to do this. My question is, is there anyway to change the output so the text in each column is left justified instead of right justified? My code sample is below where comb is the data frame. TIA, Roger out <- sprintf("%6s %22s %8s %15s

Non-standard S4 behavior

RODBC help
I am using the RODBC package to read data from an Excel file. An excerpt of the file looks like this: 00103V206 AES Corporation 6.00% 42.87 00808N202 AES Trust III 6.75% 34.98 03748R861 Apartment Investment & Management 9.00% #ERROR (I) 039380209 Arch Coal, Inc. 5.00% 61.51 My problem appears to be related to specification of data types by column. For instance, the CUSIPS in column 1 are

OOP and passing by value
Greetings, I love the R system and am sincerely grateful for the great effort the product and contributors are delivering. My question is as follows: I am trying to use S4 style classes but cannot write functions that modify an object because paramter passing is by value. For example I want to do this: setGeneric("setData", function(this, fcn,k){ standardGeneric("setData")

S4 classes and debugging - Is there a summary?
Dear all, I'm getting more and more frustrated with the whole S4 thing and I'm looking for a more advanced summary on how to deal with them. Often I get error messages that don't make sense at all, or the code is not doing what I think it would do. Far too often inspecting the code requires me to go to the source, which doesn't really help in easily finding the bit of code

the large dataset problem
Dear useRs, I recently began a job at a very large and heavily bureaucratic organization. We're setting up a research office and statistical analysis will form the backbone of our work. We'll be working with large datasets such the SIPP as well as our own administrative data. Due to the bureaucracy, it will take some time to get the licenses for proprietary software like Stata. Right
