S4 dispatch for .DollarNames (utils)
Hello, I'm trying to make .DollarNames generic and implement a method for it in a package. .DollarNames is the function that is now called to get completion possibilities. My R code looks like this: setGeneric( ".DollarNames" ) setClass("track", representation(x="numeric", y="numeric")) ## A class extending the previous, adding one more

S4 coercion
I am extending a DBI connection by setClass("TSPostgreSQLConnection", contains=c("PostgreSQLConnection","TSdbOptions")) but the first time I use this I am getting a warning when it tries to coerce the TSPostgreSQLConnection to a PostgreSQLConnection. After the first use the warning stops, but the first warning is causing me problems when I do automatic checks

help with S4 objects: trying to use a "link-glm" as a class in an object definition
Hi, I'm trying to make a new S4 object with a slot for a "link-glm" object. R doesn't like me have a slot of class "link-glm" > class(make.link("probit")) [1] "link-glm" > setClass("a",representation(item="link-glm")) [1] "a" Warning message: undefined slot classes in definition of "a": item(class

Is it possible to simply the use of NULL slots (or at least improve the help files)?
Hi Martin, Thankyou for your response. I suspect that we're not going to agree on the main point. Making it trivially simple (as say Java) to set slots to NULL. So, I'll move on to the other points here. ***Note that cited text uses excerpts only.*** > setClassUnion("character_OR_NULL", c("character", "NULL")) > A = setClass("A", slots =

Unexpected failure when calling new() with unnamed arg and
Hi, The man page for new() suggests that if 'a' is an object with slots "slot1" and "slot2" and C is a class that extends the class of 'a', then the 2 following calls should be equivalent: new("C", a, ...) new("C", slot1=a at slot1, slot2=a at slot2, ...) This is generally the case but I just ran into a situation where it's not.

S4 slot containing either aov or NULL
Dear listmembers, I would like to define a class with a slot that takes either an object of class aov or NULL. I have been reading "S4 Classes in 15 pages more or less" and "Lecture: S4 classes and methods" #First I tried with list and NULL setClass(listOrNULL") setIs("list", "listOrNULL") setIs("NULL", "listOrNULL") #doesn't

S3 objects in S4 slots
Hello, I am the maintainer of the stringkernels package and have come across a problem with using S3 objects in my S4 classes. Specifically, I have an S4 class with a slot that takes a text corpus as a list of character vectors. tm (version 0.5) saves corpora as lists with a class attribute of c("VCorpus", "Corpus", "list"). I don't actually need the

S4 and connection slot [Sec=Unclassified]
Hi all, I am having a problem trying to declare a slot representation to hold a file connection. With V2.8.0 I had been using: setClass("Element", representation( [other slots removed], datafileConn = setOldClass(c("file","connection")) ) ) This resulted in a warning but still ran okay. No however with V2.9.0 I am getting

unable to find inherited method for function "edges", for signature "ugsh", "missing"
I am new to using S4 methods and have run into this problem (on Windows XP using R 2.4.1): I am writing a package in which I use the graph package. I define my own classes of graphs as: setOldClass("graphsh") setOldClass("ugsh") setIs("ugsh", "graphsh") (I know that I "should have" used setClass instead - and I will eventually - but right now

My question is that I have a class like below definition: setClass("DBManager", representation(channel="RODBC")) My purpose of the conn slot is to hold a channel to database connection which is returned by a command like: channel <- odbcConnect("DB", uid="user",

Registering S3 class from external package
The package I'm working on can extract data from external packages but would otherwise have no dependency on them. However, I desire to be able to dispatch based on an external S3 class if its package is attached (.First.lib). My code is S4-based and its package has NAMESPACE. Registering the external class prior to the other package being attached doesn't seem to work so I am attempting

S4: inheritance of validity methods?
Dear Developers, In current implementation of validity method, objects are first coerced to superclass (slots are striped). Thus, it is not possible to write validity method which would perform some checks on children slots. Say, I want to check if number of slots in a class is equal to "n": setClass("A", representation(a="numeric", n="integer"),

Subclassing lm
I'd trying to subclass the "lm" class to produce a "mylm" class whose instances behave like lm objects (are accepted by methods like summary.lm) but have additional data or slots of my own design. For starters: setClass("mylm", "lm") produces the somewhat cryptic: Warning message: Old-style (``S3'') class "mylm" supplied as a

I set the seed at the beginning. It is to estimate the success probability, which is

Problem with _new_ if class "lm" in object representatio n.
Hi, But "any" rises some other problems well known from S3. One has "any" for "free" in S3. You don't need S4. . But I know how "if" polluted functions look like in S3. They are hard to understand and to maintain. Hence I am quite happy to use S4. Type-checking is usefull if you program with data. Also if you are on the "C side" of the
