Sarah, We don't really have enough information to begin helping you with the problem. We don't know what the c++ code is doing, which package you are talking about, etc. See the posting guidelines. That said, your code is "probably" doing something it shouldn't if things have suddenly stopped working. Try running R devel under gdb if you want to try to figure it out, e.g.

Dear all, I am using R CMD SHLIB to compile a c++ code into a library (.so) and dyn.load to load this library into a R code. I am facing some problems in the c++ code that I can not figure out how to solve. Do you recomend any good way to debug this R + C++ program? If I was programming only in C++ I would use GDB. I cannot speak for other package authors, but for all my own packages, I have provided the BugReports field in DESCRIPTION that points to the Github issues page. You can probably use this field to check if a package is on Github or not. If it is, you may just fork the original repo instead of creating a new one from the CRAN package. I'm not sure how technically difficult it would be for you.

Thanks for your answer. The rational behind my proposal is why taking "from" when length.out=1, more than "to" or "NA", or " integer(0) " ? This question seems basic. But is is not in certain situations, like when length.out = unpredictable positive integer. And I haven't found in ?seq() the particular behavior of this function when length.out = 1.

by() does not always return a list. In Gabe's example, it returns an integer, thus it is coerced to a list. as.list() means that it should be a VECSXP, not necessarily with "list" in the class attribute.
