list.files() error message: 'translateCharUTF8' must be called on a CHARSXP
I'm using list.files() on my home directory, like this: crnt.files <- list.files(dir.to.check, full.names=TRUE, all.files=TRUE, recursive=TRUE) With dir.to.check set to the full path to my home directory. After a while I get: Error in list.files(dir.to.check, full.names = TRUE, all.files = TRUE, : 'translateCharUTF8' must be called on a CHARSXP This happens on one of my

RODBC Error: 'getCharCE' must be called on a CHARSXP
I am trying to connect to an internal database and use the sqlQuery command to reduce and retrieve data using the following code: channel <-odbcConnect("some_dsn", uid="", pwd="") txt<-'SELECT Date, Region, Price FROM TableXYZ WHERE Type="Domestic"' sqlQuery(channel, cat(txt,"\n"),errors=TRUE,) close(channel) However, I get the

Unstable reproduce for potential issue with CHARSXP creation
I stumbled across one of those intermittent bugs where the code sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Below is an example run showing a failure where a CHARSXP object was not properly created (by the sub function?). I was able to reproduce this error on three different R builds in fresh R sessions, but it sometimes takes a few start up R -> run code -> close R iterations for the

Value of SET_STRING_ELT() must be a 'CHARSXP' not a 'character' & 'getEncChar' must be called on a CHARSXP
Hello, I have list of 600K lists, each sublist a list of two elements, the first a character, the second a list of six named elements, some characters some numrics. LISTA (600K) (:= h) |__ List of two elements |__ Character |__ Named List of 6 elements (characters and numerics) This works, sip <- lapply(h,function(r) r[[2]][['sip']]) but I wish to unlist this

Question about CHARSXP and garbage collection
Hi, I had a technical question about CHARSXP and garbage collection and couldn't find the answer in the R manual. The question is this. Are CHARSXP garbage collected like any other object, despite being part of the CHARSXP cache? i.e. is the cache being cleaned by garbage collection regularly and therefore, when I am in C code, do I need to protect a CHARSXP? Thanks! Holger [[alternative

R 2.9.2 crashes when sorting latin1-encoded strings
Hi everyone! I think I stumbled over a bug in the latest R 2.9.2 patched for OS X: > R version 2.9.2 Patched (2009-09-24 r49861) > i386-apple-darwin9.8.0 When I try to sort latin1-encoded character vectors, R sometimes crashes with a segmentation fault. I'm running OS X 10.5.8 and have observed this behaviour both with the i386 and x86_64 builds, in the R.app GUI as well as on

translateChar in NewName in bind.c
I see another thing in function 'NewName' in bind.c. In else if (*CHAR(tag)) , 'ans' is basically copied from 'tag'. Could the whole thing there be just the following? ans = tag; It seems to me that it can also replace ans = R_BlankString; in 'else'; so, else if (*CHAR(tag)) and else can be merged to be just else . --------------------------------------------

Package Install "Design" fails on Ubuntu 8.04
Dear All, I am running a Ubuntu 8.04 System and trying to install the Design-package. Hmisc is already installed, all fortran compilers and a Tex-Package are also on board. I searched the net and the help list for analogue threads, but didn't find any. Whenever I run the install.packages("Design")-Command, the following error message shows up in the terminal window: -- **

shash in unique.c
Looking at shash in unique.c, from R-2.10.1 I'm wondering if it makes sense to hash the pointer itself rather than the string it points to? In other words could the SEXP pointer be cast to unsigned int and the usual scatter be called on that as if it were integer? shash would look like a slightly modified version of ihash like this : static int shash(SEXP x, int indx, HashData *d) {

Deep copy of factor levels?
Hi It seems that selecting an element of a factor will copy its levels (Ubuntu 13.04, R 3.0.2). Below is the output of a script that creates a factor with 10000 elements and then calls as.list() on it. The new object seems to use more than 700 MB, and inspection of the levels of the individual elements of the list suggest that they are distinct objects. Perhaps some performance gain could

source(), parse(), and foreign UTF-8 characters
Hi I'm having trouble sourcing or parsing a UTF-8 file that contains characters that are not representable in the current locale ("foreign characters") on Windows. The source() function stops with an error, the parse() function reencodes all foreign characters using the <U+xxxx> notation. I have added a reproducible example below the message. This seems well within the

Rprintf expected encoding
I'm trying to find information about how to use Rprintf with a UTF-8 encoded string, and I'm not sure what the right cross-platform usage is. I found an earlier thread about this (http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/How-to-print-UTF-8-encoded-strings-from-a-C-routine-to-R-s-output-td4724337.html) but it wasn't very helpful. If I want to print a UTF-8 string, I can do one of the

ALTREP: Design concept of alternative string
Hi Gabriel, Thanks for your explanation, I totally understand that it is almost impossible to change the data structure of STRSXP. However, what I'm proposing is not about changing the internal representation, but rather about how we design and use the ALTREP API. I might do not state the workarounds clearly as English is not my first language. Please let me explain them again in detail.

Internal error in 'ls' for pathological environments (PR#14035)
nchar(with(list(2),ls())) gives an internal error. This is of course a peculiar call (no names in the list), but the error is not caught cleanly. It is not clear from the documentation whether with(list(2)...) is allowable; if it is not, it should presumably give an error. If it is, then ls shouldn't have problems with the resulting environment. > qq <- with(list(2),ls())

Error: value of 'SET_CXTAIL' must be a char or NULL, not a 'char'
Dear List On windows XP using R.2.6.2 I get the message Error: value of 'SET_CXTAIL' must be a char or NULL, not a 'char' in connection with calling C code (using the .Call interface). I have been unable to find any info on this (in Writing R extensions). Can anyone help me with understanding this error? (In case it helps in tracking the problem: I pass two matrices and a

some permissions issues
I?m facing some troubles with file / directory permissions... I log on the domain as admin user(root), and theres a pub share, on witch everyone needs to have permission to create / modify files, but when I change or create a file, only root can change the file, no one else. And then i need to go to server to chgrp users * -R and chown nobody * -R to allow others users to change the file.

ALTREP: Design concept of alternative string
Hello from Bioconductor, I'm developing a package to share R objects across clusters using boost library. The concept is similar to mmap package: https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/mmap/index.html . However, I have a problem when I was trying to write Dataptr_method for the alternative string. Based on my understanding, the return value of the Dataptr_method function should be a vector

ALTREP wrappers and factors
Hello, I?m experimenting with ALTREP and was wondering if there is a preferred way to create an ALTREP wrapper vector without using .Internal(wrap_meta(?)), which R CMD check doesn?t like since it uses an .Internal() function. I was trying to create a factor that used an ALTREP integer, but attempting to set the class and levels attributes always ended up duplicating and materializing the

ALTREP wrappers and factors
Hi Jiefei and Kylie, Great to see people engaging with the ALTREP framework and identifying places we may need more tooling. Comments inline.
