[leadership/opensource] invitation to online survey
Dear all, I have just put online a survey addressing the topic of "good leadership in the open-source environment". Basically, my objective is to identify the personal conceptions of good leadership that reside in the minds of the contributors, in terms of leaders' _behaviors_ and _characteristics_. What is a good open-source project leader, from the contributor's point

I have just installed Samba on RedHat Linux 6.2 which is working fine. Netbios name resolution with DHCP
I have a network with RH7.2 (netbois name "server"), Mandrake 8.1 ("Linuxbox"), Smoothwall ("Smoothwall"), WinNT ("di-bosco"), Win 98 ("robertw" & "Nicole") x 2 and Win 2k ("DiBosco2k"). Smoothwall is the DHCP server. Why would it be that all the Windows machines can ping to a netbios name, eg ping server, ping Linuxbox

January Ruby events in the SF Bay Area
Bosco So has located a promising new venue for the SF Ruby Meetup: There is WiFi access to the Internet as well as a large plasma TV/monitor for presentations. In addition to offering caffeine in various forms, they have sandwiches and desserts. Lastly, there are lots of dining opportunities nearby for apres-event chowing. -- http://ruby.meetup.com/6/events/4815812 Meanwhile,

Two departments on two different locations
Hi there, like topic sais, I'd like to build a domain-system with two locations. Our users work one day here the other day in the other place. The two locations are connected via VPN (10MBit). To have one datastore in sync on both locations I was thinking about something like a distributed filesystem (e.g. ceph). Why? I hope to be able to setup the cluster between the two locations with a

Inconsistent SOA records from different Samba AD-DC DNS servers
Hi all, I am experiencing strange behaviour regarding DNS resolution with my samba-driven AD. This is with Debian-packaged samba on raspberry Pi: # samba -V Version 4.19.5-Debian # uname -a Linux dc3.ad.mydomain.tld 6.1.0-rpi8-rpi-v8 #1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 1:6.1.73-1+rpt1 (2024-01-25) aarch64 GNU/Linux I would expect that every DNS server of the domain would respond with the same SOA record. But

Project Technical Leadership Council
April 25, 2018 In order to continue the momentum that Gluster has seen over the last few years, we've formed a project technical leadership council to replace our current single project lead. The Technical Leadership Council will provide broad oversight and direction for the project as a whole. As Gluster has grown, it is no longer feasible to have one person be responsible for direction and

Forming a "Project Leadership Committee"
Xapian is in the process of joining the Software Freedom Conservancy (https://sfconservancy.org/), but one thing we need to sort out before we can finalise this is some sort of more formal project leadership structure. James Aylett and I have discussed this with Bradley Kuhn from Conservancy, and we think the most appropriate model currently would be a small group of at least 3 (to avoid deadlock

Updates to NUT project leadership
Hello all, As some of you may already know from comments in the GitHub pull requests and other media, due to pre-emption by real life our long-term leader and main maintainer, Arnaud Quette, had to step down from this role and from intensive involvement in the NUT project (we hope he would still be able to help on occasion, time permitting). He asked the members of the core team to take over,

SAS CMO and SVP Jim Davis on Open Source, BI , competition, leadership succession & others
An interview with Chief Marketing Officer of SAS Institute, Jim Davis. Here is an extract- http://www.decisionstats.com/2009/06/05/interview-jim-davis-sas-institute/ *Ajay -It is rare to find a major software company that has zero involvement with open source movement (or as I call it with peer-reviewed code). Could you name some of SAS Institute’s contribution to open source? What could be

Thank you all! :) In the following case, I think the raised question pertains to many contributors on this list, so would answer publicly - and thanks for asking. > There are various GitHub issues and Dev mailing list inquires, but they haven't really gone anywhere. > Can you provide some

help for a loop procedure
Hello everybody! I’m trying to define the optimal number of surveys to detect the highest number of species within a monitoring season/session. To do this I want to run all the possible combinations between a set of samples and to calculate the total number of species for each combination of 2, 3, 4 …n samples events, so that at the end I will be able to define which is the lowest number of

Leadership change
Greetings all, Sadly, I must announce my "retirement" as the wxruby project leader. I still believe in the project, and really want it to succeed. Unfortunately, there are other projects that are higher priority for me right now. I cannot be an effective wxruby lead at this time. Perhaps at some point in the future, wxruby will again become a top priority for me. If that happens,

Semi-OT: OpenSource DRM server on CentOS?
Hello, all - I understand that this is moderately OT, but hey, since I plan on running it on top of CentOS.... ;) Please bear with me. For our company's internal use of protected media, I have been asked to investigate any and all kinds of OpenSource DRM servers/services. I wouldn't imagine that (if this exists) an OpenSource DRM server daemon would exist on the stock CentOS release,
