Persistent audio streams?
I am running MRTG.
But yeah, I guess I should look into a few more things before I shoot my mouth
(so to speak) off.

24/7/365 ogg-vorbis client
Don't know if this is the proper place for this question ...
I'm setting up an audio stream from a public radio station's studios to a
remote transmitter. We're using icecast for the server, and it's performed
remarkably well (it's been up for over two years now).
I need a client for the remote location. Requirements are it must run on
linux, come up at boot, operate

Access.log
I'm using Simplecast to feed 8 mount points of a 24/7 live stream to Icecast on a win platform. When I have the Statistics Relays graphing activated, I get an entry each minute in Access.log for each of the mount points.
That particular entry is pretty much useless but of course, being able to see the IP address of client drops can be useful. This log grows to mammoth proportions unless I

Bingo. The stream drops at exactly midnight every night. Right on schedule. I
expected better, especially since I'm paying extra for a business-level DSL
connection.

Using plaintext auth and SSL
I'm working with a company that presently has a Linux mailserver which all
users have (no shell) accounts on. Mail is accessed via pop3 with plaintext
authentication. They want to move to a system using imap with SSL. I'm
building them a new server. I'd like to offer both for a while so we can work
the bugs out and migrate users over to SSL imap over time. It appears that in

Sound card recommendation?
Can anyone recommend a good high-end sound card to use on a streaming server?
Basically all I need are two channels, a good 96 kHz sampling chip, and it
needs to run on Linux.

I'm afraid I don't know all the places to look for logs that might tell me something. My script that keeps MPG123 running keeps a log of all reboots and outages. A reconnect that lasts less than one minute is counted as continuous outage.

How much CPU horsepower?
I'm building a server. It will be using icecast and ices2. Sound quality will
be Q=5, and I'll need to set a max bitrate. It will be running full duplex,
with both incoming and outgoing streams, using an M-Audio Delta 44 (96 kHz
sampling rate) sound card.
How much CPU am I going to need?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I didn't describe it fully. If an outage is detected, the system attempts a reconnect immediately. If a reconnect is established but is lost again without a full minute of audio, I don't log it as a reconnect. Once a reconnect is

ices0 and ices2 on /dev/dsp?
Simple newbie question (if I had the necessary hardware, I'd just try it).
Can I run both ices0 and ices2 simultaneously, point them at the same source
(/dev/dsp) and then use icecast to broadcast both ogg vorbis and MP3 streams?

Persistent audio streams?
My apologies if this is a stupid question, or has been covered in detail
somewhere that I haven't found yet. I have spent a while looking around. I'm
new to streaming audio, but I do know a thing or two about TCP/IP networking.
I'm working with a local public radio station. They have a remote transmitter
located about a hundred miles away, to serve another community. Right now

Buffer in IceCast
Hi Tom,
You might be right, but I don't get why my existing downloads (I guess they
are on different routes) are not affected. If my ADLS provider is doing some
IP adjustments (btw my IP is static) I expect everything to disconnect, not
only my icecast connection. So I'll monitor my USRobotics logs today and
tomorrow so see if there is something strange.

Strange occurrence
I had something happen the other night that I just can't explain. It may not be an Icecast issue at all, but I thought it was interesting enough to post.
I have a private stream with 6 mountpoints, all receiving the same 32 kbps mp3 stream from Simplecast. Both Simplecast & Icecast are running on the same Win2k system. The configuration allows me to track the comings and goings of

Ports required for Icecast
I am providing a machine to a client that will be connecting to an existing Icecast stream that is working just fine. But the client will be connecting from behind a firewall. They need to inform their IT department what ports need to be open for proper operation.
Running ethereal, I see the client machine using ports that vary with each connection in the range of 32782 upwards to 32827 over

using ezstream with stdin
I'm having a hard time not getting mp3 data to ezstream via stdin fast
enough. The vb.net application I'm writing, ezstream and icecast are all
running on the same machine (Widows XP). Some where in the process, a
buffer empties out and that results in a drop out when you are
listening. Usually the dropout happens at a song change.
At first I was chunking up the data according to bit
