If you want to stream at any bandwidth other than what the files were
recorded at, you'll need to re-encode using lame (or another codec). If you
rip the files at the same bandwidth you'll be streaming at, you won't need
it.

liveice Question
Ok, is this possible: I want to have a 128k and a 24k stream of a
particualr audio program, plugged into the line in of my Ensoniq AudioPCI
128 (es1370 chipset) Is there any way to do this with just one soundcard,
or do I need two?
Thanks

Problem streaming to shoutcast w/ liveice
Maybe this is the wrong place to post, but...
When trying to start up liveice to a shoutcast server I'm getting the following
error, and then it dies and screws up the terminal emulation for my session.
Anyone seen this before?

>Fromwhat you describe, your comp/limiter can't possibly be working
correctly. It should be the last unit in line before the sound card, and
needs to be adjusted properly. You also need to balance the levels on your
mixing board (so that the correc t level comes at predictable place on the
slider). It might be worthwhile to find someone with some sound-mixing or

ov_comment spec
I've been working towards a mp3info like tool, OggInfo, which will surplant
vorbiscomment in functionality, and also incorportate mp3info like
featuers. Looking at existing vorbis api calls, i find:
vorbis_comment_add() /* unsupervised string insertion */
vorbis_comment_add_tag() /* formated TAG=text insertion */
vorbis_comment_query() /* scans for matching tag (up to count duplicates) and

Unfortunately not. It should compile easily. The reason we didn't
release binaries was because we'd want to put lame in there, and that's
illegal. :(
So we'd have to release binaries without lame, which would lead to lots
of email asking why reencoding isn't working.

broadcast FM radio
Thanks for your answers Tim and Jaromil, there were useful
for my work.
But you don't understand what i really mean (sorry for my
english).
Here is exactly what i want to do:
I want to install on my PC (OS Linux) 2 or more FM-tuners.
These tuners will get existing FM stations programs.
Then, i want to broadcast these programs at the same time
on internet with 2 or more softwares'

Getting Listed
I never had any problems getting my liveice-source streams to list on
yp.shoutcast.com using Icecast 1.3.5b1 - though they wouldn't list with
later versions. Haven't tried anything since 1.3.7 For a variety of
reasons, I started using that 'other' server. But the point is that it
*can* be done without resorting to using a Windows source box.

icecast+liveice in normal user fail
I would like to use icecast and liveice as my normal account.
If I do so, using xmms, I can access the relayed radios I have defined,
but I cannot listen th the playlist liveice is broadcasting on /disk. XMMS
tells me that the specified stream could not be found.
If I launch icecast as root however, it works fine. I've searched through
the logs and checked the file permissions but I

MP3 decoding, fading and streaming at the same time
Hi There,
I have just ported to Linux a program that I wrote years ago in Prolog
under DOS to automate our Shortwave radio station. Back in 1990 the
original program used ADPCM coded audio files and a special board. Now I
can use MP3 files and a Soundblaster compatible card ;-) under Linux, and
it runs from a console without any fancy interface. I absolutely need to
fade-in and fade-out

The rates are in arbitration, and I doubt they will come out anywhere
near that amount. It just isn't feasible, even for large companies.

off topic: info on mp3 files
The perl MP3-Info module will give you anything you want from the id3 tag,
including artist, title, etc. If you're not a perl programmer, you might
want to look for a script called 'mpi' that makes a nice command-line
frontend to the module.
Hope this helps

It's a new word :)
I'm just making ices be able to reencode its playlist at multiple
bitrates at the same time, so you can broadcast the same stream for
broadband and POTS users.
I've already got this working (and I've been listening to it for about
an hour and a half so far), but I'm not

command-line flac tool to report song length?
I've got a bunch of flac files and need to report their length.
With MP3s, you use `mp3info -x $filename`
But is there a way to find out the length (minutes:seconds or just seconds) of a flac audio file, without converting it to WAV first?
Thanks!

using vorbiscomment
As far as I could find, nowhere in the documentation or even source
does it actually explain how to use vorbiscomment. Just a simple
"vorbiscomment reads TAG=VALUE pairs on separate lines from stdin"
would save people a lot of time. Of course, this is still a painful
tool to use, and since I had some .ogg's lying around with broken
comments (from my first ogg vorbis patch to grip),

napster
Would someone who has tried napster 2.0 beta 9 comment on how well it
works under the influence of wine. Although I often download with
gnapster, you can't share your files. If no one shares, there's nothing
to download...

ZFS receive issue running multiple receives and rollbacks
Hi, all,
Environment: S10U3 running as VMWare Workstation 6 guest; Fedora 7 is
the VMWare host, 1 GB RAM
I''m creating a solution in which I need to be able to save off state on
one host, then restore it on another. I''m using ZFS snapshots with ZFS
receive and it''s all working fine, except for some strange behavior when
I perform multiple rollbacks and receives.
