[PATCH 3/3] ALPHA: implement and use rdwr_bytes
This is part of some patches to support sectors > 512.
Currently I'm able to boot a Ubuntu kernel but seems that mboot is not working for some reason.
This patch add a rdwr_bytes functions which remove the assumption in
some places that sector is 512. This function is quite helpful if you
are going to read/write a range of bytes to/from the stack without
creating stack overflows for free.

Printing OK on 98, "Access denied" on XP Pro
I have a very simple setup on a Solaris 8 server, running Samba 3.0.1 (see smb.conf below). A desktop PC running Windows 98 (SE?) happily connects to and prints to my one shared printer, but an XP Pro laptop takes a loooong time to install the local driver and then just says "Access denied, unable to connect".
I already told it to use a client driver and disabled spoolss. Here's

isolinux needing mkisofs (2.12-pre11)
Tried both normal and debug images with Roxio 6 and Nero 6.6. Everything
worked fine. Also tried cdrwin and ran into an interesting issue with it
regarding it's support of image files >8k -- reported it to them.
FYI, tried booting on 2 Intel and 2 Asus planars all reported no info
returned in the spec packet.

net ads commands work, wbinfo fails
Hi, all;
I compiled Samba 3.0.11 on Solaris 8 with MIT Kerberos 1.3.6 and
OpenLDAP 2.2.23. I joined our Active Directory domain, but only the
various `net ads` commands work, while any `wbinfo` commands fail.
Where can I start searching for this?
My log.winbindd says that the server failed to fetch the shared
secret. Oddly, it also says that it's trying to contact a Domain named

Debugging segfault in foreach
Hi,
I'm using R-2.12 on a linux 64bit machine.
When I run a chunk of code inside a foreach() %do% { ...} or %dopar%
{...} (with doMC backend) I keep getting a segfault. Running the
*same* code within lapply(something, function(x) ... ) doesn't result
in any segfaults. I'll paste the output below, but I'm not sure it
would be helpful.
I'm more curious how to go about smoking

Gene, could you try out the attached patch? And see if you get any
different results?
Andrew, feel free to try it out too, or you could just wait for someone
to cut another pre-release.
Note that I don't think this will

content on demand HOWTO available
if you point most clients to an mp3 file the entire file must be downloaded
before it can start playing.
The .m3u and .pls files tell an mp3 client to start downloading and buffer
the mp3 so that it can play it while it is downloading. The biggest issue
with streaming this way is that if the file is encoded at a bitrate that is
higher than can be downloaded by (or served to) the client due to

isolinux pathnames
Quick Question About Bootable CDs:
Am I correct in assuming that ISOLINUX locates its files by accessing a
Directory Tree in ASCII addressed by the Primary Volume Descriptor in the
final session of the CD?
I'm working on an On-The-Fly CDR Archiving Program and doing some advance
research into Boot Mechanisms.

Dovecot and Solr on the same server or on different
Hi.
what would you suggest? What are the pros and cons for having dovecot and Solr on the same or different hots?
I have about 800 accounts, some millions of mails and about 2 TB of zipped mails.
From the recent experiences regarding maintenance I?d prefer different hosts for each.
Thanks for suggestions and feedback . G?tz

Running SSH on a different port
HI All,
With my new firewall in place, it has opened my eyes to how much
traffic gets blocked in a single day and also what are the most active
rules. I get *a lot* of requests for port 22.
How does one switch ssh ports? What is a good port to use? What
ramifications does it have when I need to ssh in? Is it as simple as
ssh user at hots:port?

isolinux needing mkisofs
Due to limitations of equipment, I have need of using the isolinux boot
loader with .iso files generated by roxio.
After trying (and of course failing) with an off the shelf version of
isolinux, I grabbed the source for isolinux (syslinux 2.11 package) and
started looking.
It took a few hours to orient myself, but I ended up doing the modification
below to isolinux.asm. I then had to write
